Description: "Two Hundred Years Before the Mast" highlights sea voyages of exploration, adventure, and enterprise in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as the second phase of sea travel following the two centuries of exploration after Columbus. Through published accounts and reports; printed and manuscript journals, logs, and memoirs; maps and charts; scientific and historical treatises; and fictional narratives, materials on display reflect various aspects of sea voyages and their impact on contemporary western society between 1700 and 1900, including collections of voyage accounts that preserved and interpreted documents relating to historical and contemporary sea explorations; voyages around the world; exploration of an arctic passage to the East; voyages to the south seas; scientific expeditions; narratives of personal adventure on the high seas; and fictional accounts and literary works inspired by contemporary sea voyages. Together these materials illustrate that three and four centuries after the opening of the age of exploration, navigators and sailors continued to earn their discoveries on the ocean frontier "before the mast." This exhibition was on display in the Special Collections Gallery from February 24-July 31, 1992.

Title: Through the Years: The University of Delaware Through the Yearbooks

Description: The first yearbook was published by Delaware College in 1899 as the Aurora. The Blue Hen title was adopted in 1911. Until the implementation of co–education in 1945, the Blue Hen included only the all–male Delaware College. The yearbook of the Women’s College of Delaware, which began operation in 1914, was called the Blue and Gold. In 1946, the Blue Hen became the official yearbook of the newly co–educational institution. In 1948, the Blue Hen began annual publication that continued until it ceased production in 1999. Through the efforts of the Center for Digital Collections at the University of Delaware Library, all issues of the Blue Henand the Blue & Gold are available for download. Individual yearbooks are keyword searchable. This exhibition was originally on display in the first floor Information Area of Morris Library from May 8-July 2, 2012.

Title: The War of 1812: America's Forgotten War

Description: The year 2012 marks the two–hundredth anniversary of the War of 1812, which was fought between the United States of America and the British Empire from 1812 to 1815. War was declared in 1812 as a consequence of tensions between the two nations over international trade and American expansionism, although initial support for the war split sharply along party lines. Although sometimes regarded as American’s second war for independence, the conflict has largely faded from public memory, becoming one of America’s forgotten wars. The items on display document the war as experienced and perceived by civilian noncombatants, as seen in their personal correspondence and in the printed newspapers which provided them with updates on the progress of the war. This single case exhibition was originally on display in the Morris Library Information Room from May 1-31, 2012.

Title: The Klemscott Chaucer

Description: William Morris (1834–1896), poet, social reformer, and a leading figure in the Pre–Raphaelite movement, founded the Kelmscott Press in 1891. William Morris’ work had an enormous and beneficial effect on the printers of his time. He led the way back to using unified typography, and he reinstated the book illustrated by one artist and conforming to an overall design. The Kelmscott Chaucer was printed in two columns on handmade paper with specially designed large gothic type in red and black, with 87 woodcut illustrations and 116 full–page plates after designs by Sir Edward Burne–Jones, and numerous woodcut borders and initial letters designed for this work by William Morris. This single case exhibition was originally on display in the Morris Library Information Room from June 1-June 2, 2012.

Title: The Civil Rights Act of 1964: 50th Anniversary

Description: With the end of the Civil War in 1865, legal slavery came to an end in the United States. After reconstruction in the mid-1870s, particularly in Southern states, laws were established that deprived African American citizens of these same rights, and enforced segregation in housing, education and other domains of life. These new regulations were known as Jim Crow laws. During this period, racial discrimination was commonly found in the North as well. Despite this, a legal and political movement for civil rights challenged these discriminatory laws and practices throughout the first half of the twentieth century. The 1963 March on Washington marked a watershed for this growing movement social movement. This exhibit explores the background, passage, and legacy of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, with particular emphasis on conditions in Delaware. This exhibition was originally on display in the first floor Information Area of Morris Library from February 4--July 11, 2014.

Description: "The Animal Kingdom: Six Centuries of Zoological Illustration" is based on the superb collection of books in Special Collections containing scientific and artistic images of animals dating from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries. The exhibition includes images of animals from early printed herbals and travel books of the sixteenth century. These artists rarely work from actual specimens but from their imaginations or from the descriptions of others. The results were often fantastic creatures such as unicorns and mermaids. Books in the exhibit from this period include Petri Andreæ Matthioli senensis medici: commentarii in sex libros Pedacii Dioscoridis and Ortus sanitatis. This exhibition was on display in the Special Collection Gallery from February 13-June 12, 2007.

Description: This exhibit features self-consciously created autobiographies or memoirs in which individuals explore life meaning or historical context, as well as private diaries and journals in which authors unintentionally bestow rich personal texture to the fabric of history. Even pocket diaries and desk calendars which primarily serve to organize passing life details reveal useful information. Scrapbooks and other artistic self works also reward the researcher with evidence of creative self-expression. Diaries, journals, personal scrapbooks, travel narratives, autobiographies, memoirs, and reminiscences convey the personal experiences of ordinary men, women, and children who did not merit even a footnote in the official chronicles of history. Broadly called "life writing," these works help document much that previously was concealed from the standard record of human experience. The noted Brandywine illustrators, N. C. Wyeth and Howard Pyle, have contributed to the Robin Hood corpus through the written word and celebrated illustrations. Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Errol Flynn, Mel Brooks, and Kevin Costner have all lent their dramatic talents to developing the heroic and comic possibilities of the "prince of thieves." A sampling of renowned scholars of the Robin Hood legend and of earlier literature also appears in the exhibit. Description: Thomas Francis Jones, Sr., a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, 1937–1940, after which he served in the United States Army Coast Artillery. Jones enrolled in the United States Army and was stationed in Hawaii as a member of Battery C, 15th Coast Artillery. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Private First Class from the Army on July 12, 1945.Many of the items collected by Mr. Jones during his service in the Army, while stationed in Hawaii and during the war, were donated to the University of Delaware Library by his family in February 2012, some of which were displayed in this exhibit. This single case exhibition was originally on display in the Morris Library Information Room from December 3-20, 2012.

Description: 2014 marks the centenary of the birth of the grandfather of the Beats, el hombre invisible, the gentleman junkie: William S. Burroughs (1914-1997). Burroughs was a founding member of the Beat Generation, which paved the way for counterculture movements in the 1960s. He addressed early themes of gay liberation, deconstructed the linearity of narrative fiction, and influenced cyberpunk and punk rock. “Nothing Is True, Everything Is Permitted”: William S. Burroughs at 100 pays tribute to the most famous junkie writer, the iconoclast, and the reluctant icon. Title: Neil Simon's The Good Doctor Typescripts

Description: Renowned American playwright Neil Simon is best known for his commercially successful comedies, such as The Odd Couple (1965) and Biloxi Blues (1985), among many others. Opening at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on Broadway on November 27, 1973, The Good Doctor ran for 208 performances. The University of Delaware’s Resident Ensemble Players production of The Good Doctor opened on March 31 and closes May 14, 2011. In this exhibition, three versions of the script from the University of Delaware Library Special Collections' Richard Hoffman — Neil Simon collection are on display: a first draft dated “Spring of 1973,” a final draft dated November 27, 1973, and an undated copy of the screenplay which was produced by the Public Broadcasting Service in 1978 starring Edward Asner, Richard Chamberlain and Marsha Mason. Thus, they lead the way in exploring the connections among data and documents in researching historical records. This small exhibition on the Hazlitt family, particularly writer William Hazlitt (1778-1830), brings together several of the different kinds of materials that can be found in the University of Delaware Library Special Collections--diaries, correspondence, artwork, and books--in order to shed light on his influences and impact. William Hazlitt developed into a prominent literary, art, and social critic, with time also spent as a painter and journalist. Description: Dr. John A. Munroe (1914–2006) was a noted authority on Delaware history and a highly regarded educator who spent over 60 years on the faculty of the University of Delaware. The Wilmington native was also an alumnus, receiving his B.A. in 1936 and his M.A. in 1941. The University of Delaware named Dr. Munroe the H. Rodney Sharp Professor of History in 1962. Over the course of his career he also acted as head of the History Department, co–founded the Hagley Fellowship, and assisted with the establishment of the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture. The exhibit displayed his professional achievements through a photograph and his published material. Ringgold’s serigraphs depict examples of key issues that prompted the necessity of the Civil Rights movement and highlight significant events of the Civil Rights movement, commented on by King in the letter. Description: When Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, professional and amateur poets immediately began writing verses that expressed the shock and despair shared by millions.  A similar thing had happened in 1865 when President Abraham Lincoln was shot to death by actor John Wilkes Booth.  The most famous poem from that time is Walt Whitman’s “When Lilacs last in the Dooryard Bloom’d.”  While no poetic homage to Kennedy has become as famous as Whitman’s poignant elegy, many of America’s finest poets did respond to the latter event, which seared the consciousness of a generation.  This exhibit displays a few examples, drawn from University of Delaware Library Special Collections. Description: For fifty-five years, Henry Morris's Bird & Bull Press has been devoted to the printing and publishing of fine press books. Henry Morris's career as a fine press printer began in 1958, when he sought an outlet for a newfound interest in making paper by hand. He introduced the name of his imprint, the Bird & Bull Press, with his second book in 1961. In keeping with the interests that first prompted Henry Morris to establish the Bird & Bull Press, the majority of Morris's books have been devoted to the art, craft, and history of printing and papermaking. Throughout his career Henry Morris has printed books which are renowned both for their aesthetic qualities and for the value of their textual content. Early this year, Henry Morris announced his retirement, bringing a close to the Bird & Bull Press. This exhibition celebrates Henry Morris's long and productive career. Description: The United Nations established the year 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy. The year marked the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s first use of the telescope to record his astronomical findings. In an effort to continue cultivating the spirit of collaboration across nations, the international astronomy organization Astronomers Without Borders has designated the month of April “Global Astronomy Month.” Its goal is to “bring new ideas, new opportunities and ... enthusiasts together worldwide, celebrating One People, One Sky.” The exhibit features three books on how astronomers shared ideas, observations, findings and theories (even if not always correct) throughout the centuries, building upon each other’s work to make important contributions of their own. The two manuscripts on display are evidence of the enduring and pervasive fascination that studying the sky has had on amateur astronomers and enthusiasts. Description: The exhibit illustrates one of many research topics supported by the Unidel History of Chemistry Collection. The history of chemical separation, now a highly specialized branch of industrial chemistry, encompasses chemical theory and laboratory practice. The exhibition traces this theme in early writers such as Biringuccio, Agricola and Libavius, who cover a wide range of chemical subjects from a practitioner's point of view; and later in later treatises, textbooks, dictionaries, and manuals. Works included in the exhibition from the nineteenth century and twentieth century demonstrate the increasing industrialization of chemical processes. This exhibition was on display in the Special Collections gallery from February-May, 1991.

Description: American nursery businesses began using illustrations in their sales catalogs or seed catalogs in the late 1840s.  As illustration processes developed the images in the catalogs became more exquisite and colorful.  Seed catalogs provide valuable information about the history of horticulture, botany, agribusiness, gardening, and advertising, as well as graphic design.  Additionally seed catalogs document the social history of the changing trends in gardening and farming. Special Collections' holdings in seed catalogs comprise the serial publications of over 700 American and European seed houses and nurseries from the late eighteenth century to the present, with a concentration in the years between 1870 and 1930. These catalogs are just one part of Special Collections outstanding historical horticulture collection. This single case exhibition was originally on display in the Morris Library Information Room from August 1-31, 2011.

The work of the University of Delaware Library Associates, an independent library support organization, has had a profound impact on the growth of all areas of the University of Delaware Library over the past four decades, but perhaps the organization's most enduring contribution has been the support it has provided for the University of Delaware Library's Special Collections Department. From the very outset, the Library Associates identified the development of the Library's research collections as a top priority. In particular, the Library Associates sought to enrich the Library's research holdings in some of the fundamental disciplines of the humanities, notably English and American literature, music, art, history, languages and literature, and economics. Description: Forging a Collection is drawn entirely from the collection Dr. Frank W. Tober bequeathed to the University of Delaware Library following his death on June 24, 1995. The Frank W. Tober Collection is comprised of nearly four thousand books and periodicals, hundreds of manuscripts and papers, and a variety of other materials, including artwork and ephemera. The cornerstone of Dr. Tober's personal library was his collection on literary forgery. Dr. Tober also pursued such related topics as literary hoaxes, imaginary voyages, counterfeiting, forensics, and the technology of forgery detection. All of these topics are represented in the exhibition Forging a Collection. This exhibition was on display in the Special Collections Gallery from August 19-December 15, 1999.

Description: Clarence Warner Perry, Jr. (1921–1997) was a lifelong magic enthusiast and an amateur magician. Perry attended the University of Delaware and in 1943 graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation he was employed as a design engineer for the DuPont Corporation where he worked until his retirement in 1985. Throughout his career he continued to pursue his interest in stage magic, an interest which he cultivated during his youth. He designed magic tricks, operated a magic store in Wilmington, and performed as an amateur magician. The Warner Perry Collection was donated to the University of Delaware by the estate of Warner Perry and consists of Perry’s personal collection of printed books about stage magic and his own personal papers which documents his own magic practice. This single case exhibition was originally on display in the Morris Library Information Room from April 2- 30, 2012.

Description: As a result of a generous donation from the Delaware Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, the University of Delaware Library has acquired a collection of more than seventy historic Civil War era pamphlets and other publications which will be designated in memory of William W. Swayze, III. Mr. Swayze was a longtime member of the Lincoln Club of Delaware who served as president of the Club in 1977 and played an important role in Lincoln Club activities for many years. Mr. Swayze, who was a lifelong resident of Wilmington, Delaware, and received his B.A. degree in Business Administration from the University of Delaware in 1938, passed away on October 26, 2009, at the age of 93. This significant addition to the Lincoln Collection features fiery political speeches, scarce abolitionist tracts, pro-confederacy publications, Confederate imprints, autobiographical works, and much more. This exhibition was originally on display in the Lincoln Case on the second floor of Morris Library from July 18-December 13, 2013.

The exhibition examines the changing patterns of American food preparation and service, the impact of technology, the origins and influence of the home economics movement, the evolution and democratization of the dining room, American attitudes toward drink, the etiquette of dining, and the popularity of commercial dining establishments. This exhibition was on display in the Special Collections Gallery from June 21-September 30, 1994.
