Description: American Archives Month raises public awareness about the importance of historic documents and records in archives and special collections.  The theme for 2011 is “I Found it in the Archives!,” highlighting discoveries of families, heritage, and treasures in each institution’s collections. In the aftermath of WWII, individual French citizens donated enough gifts to fill 49 boxcars, which were then shipped to the United States. Each state received a boxcar from the “Merci Train,” with Hawaii (then a territory) and Washington, D.C., sharing one. A selection of the gifts from Delaware’s boxcar were given directly to the University. Over time the whereabouts of many of the “Merci Train” gifts have been lost, but three of Delaware’s gifts remain in the holdings of the University of Delaware Library’s Special Collections Department (MSS 440). On display are three manuscripts of local history and geography produced by A. Carriere of Millau, Aveyron, France, as well as a letter expressing the thanks of the author and the people of that region. URL: http://www.lib.udel.edu/ud/spec/exhibits/dickens/

Description: Victorian novelist Charles Dickens achieved literary superstardom in his own lifetime and remains widely popular 200 years after his birth. Although he never publically discussed it, he never forgot the financial instability of his childhood which temporarily led to debtor’s prison for his father and a factory job for the 12–year–old Charles. Beginning as a young man, Dickens’s walked for miles in the city, developing an intimate familiarity with not only the kinds of people who lived there, but London itself. Dickens remained concerned for the poor and steadfastly advocated for changes in the social structure which would bring them access to sanitation, education, and respectable work. Individuals of all classes enjoyed Dickens’s tales, with communal readings, theatrical productions, and illustrations making them accessible to even the illiterate. This exhibition was on display in the Special Collections Gallery from January 24-June 8, 2012.

URL: http://www.lib.udel.edu/ud/spec/exhibits/jfk2013/index.html

Description: When Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, professional and amateur poets immediately began writing verses that expressed the shock and despair shared by millions.  A similar thing had happened in 1865 when President Abraham Lincoln was shot to death by actor John Wilkes Booth.  The most famous poem from that time is Walt Whitman’s “When Lilacs last in the Dooryard Bloom’d.”  While no poetic homage to Kennedy has become as famous as Whitman’s poignant elegy, many of America’s finest poets did respond to the latter event, which seared the consciousness of a generation.  This exhibit displays a few examples, drawn from University of Delaware Library Special Collections. He led the way back to using unified typography, and he reinstated the book illustrated by one artist and conforming to an overall design. Description: The year 2011 marks the four-hundredth anniversary of the printing of the King James Bible. Seven years in the making, the King James Bible was the product of six teams of approximately forty-seven translators drawn from Cambridge, Oxford and Westminster Abbey who represented some of the nation’s best scholarly minds. The volume in this exhibit is a copy of the second printing of the King James Bible. Work on this edition began in 1611 the logistics of printing a text of this size meant that the book was not finished until 1613. The large size of the volume was meant to make it suitable for use in public readings and sermons. It would once have resided on the lectern of an English congregation. Title: 1864: Year of Destiny

URL: http://www.lib.udel.edu/ud/spec/exhibits/lincoln_1864/index.html

Description: The year 1864 was a pivotal one in the American Civil War and the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln. The Union Army had achieved decisive victories in the July 1863 Battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg and in March 1864, President Lincoln appointed Ulysses S. Grant commander in chief of all Union armies. Under Grant's leadership, Union forces won battle after battle culminating in General William Tecumseh Sherman's Savannah campaign, famously known as Sherman's march to the sea. Perhaps the most critical event of 1864 was the presidential election which pitted Lincoln against his former Army of the Potomac commander George McClellan. McClellan, the Democrat candidate, ran on a platform of asking for immediate peace with the states in rebellion and, in essence, granting them their independence from the Union. Had McClellan and the democrats prevailed in the election there would have likely been two separate nations with no guarantee of reconciliation between them. Title: London Bound: American Writers in Britain, 1870-1916

URL: http://www.lib.udel.edu/ud/spec/exhibits/londonbound/

Description: To be “London Bound” was common among turn-of-the-century authors on the other side of the Atlantic. Whether they were American, Canadian, or even Cuban, many made the voyage to Britain, either for short visits or to settle there permanently as expatriates—in some cases, binding themselves to their new homes through marriage to English spouses. Many, too, sent their plays to West End theatre producers, their articles to British periodicals, and their manuscripts to London publishing firms, which issued them as bound books. More important than those literal connections, however, were the transatlantic ties of spiritual affinity and allegiance. American authors with causes to champion—racial justice, gender equality, sexual freedom, the abolition of class distinctions, or new ideals of literary form and expression—sought and found support among sympathizers in Britain. Their links were particularly strong with the anti-imperialists, feminists, socialists, and Arts-and-Crafts practitioners who congregated around the designer and poet William Morris, as well as with the Aesthetes and Decadents associated with Oscar Wilde. Countless Americans were, in turn, inspired to write, and to write in particular ways, by direct or indirect contact with radical artistic developments in nineteenth-century Britain, especially Pre-Raphaelitism and Aestheticism. This exhibition, highlighting books, manuscripts, periodicals, drawings, photographs, letters, and printed ephemera, was on display in the Special Collections gallery from August 24-December 17, 2010.

Title: Little Known Histories of Newark, Delaware, 1758-2008: An Exhibition

URL: http://www.lib.udel.edu/ud/spec/exhibits/newark/

Description: arose from the crossroads of two Lenni Lenape Indian trails which spanned the peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware River, and connected the lower peninsula with the northern hills of later-day Pennsylvania. As Europeans - mainly English, Welsh, and Scots-Irish - came to the area in the early eighteenth century, the same intersecting crossroads gradually matured into a village, with brickyards, mills, and tanneries developing in the vicinity. Newark was first chartered on April 13, 1758, by King George II of England, when he granted permission for the growing village to hold a weekly market and a semi-annual fair. Though still considered a small town in 2008 with a permanent population under 30,000, Newark's history of growth and change since 1758 is a reflection of significant developments in the history of many American cities over the last 250 years. The curators of this exhibition have selected several hundred items to illustrate Newark's history. This exhibition was on display in the Special Collections Gallery February 19-June 20, 2008.

Title: Self Works: Diaries, Scrapbooks, and other Autobiographical Efforts

URL: http://www.lib.udel.edu/ud/spec/exhibits/selfwork/index.htm

Description: This exhibit features self-consciously created autobiographies or memoirs in which individuals explore life meaning or historical context, as well as private diaries and journals in which authors unintentionally bestow rich personal texture to the fabric of history. Even pocket diaries and desk calendars which primarily serve to organize passing life details reveal useful information. Scrapbooks and other artistic self works also reward the researcher with evidence of creative self-expression. Diaries, journals, personal scrapbooks, travel narratives, autobiographies, memoirs, and reminiscences convey the personal experiences of ordinary men, women, and children who did not merit even a footnote in the official chronicles of history. Broadly called "life writing," these works help document much that previously was concealed from the standard record of human experience. This exhibition was on display in the Special Collections Gallery from August 19-December 18, 1997.
