Description: The College of Education and Human Ecology, in partnership with the Colleges of Pharmacy, Social Work, Public Health, and Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, planned a conference (July 25, 2018) for Ohio educators concerning the opioid crisis. The purpose of the conference was to help teachers, principals, superintendents, administrators, school nurses, guidance counselors, coaches, and school social workers learn more about the opioid crisis and what they can do to support children, families, and communities. Participation in the conference allowed educators, in consultation with their local districts, to apply for up to one professional development credit. The conference sessions were taped. The videos are now available to be used as resources and are accessible on this site.

Description: Research has made clear the importance of high quality early childhood education for children, especially those from vulnerable backgrounds. It is also clear that the most important element in early care and education settings is the teacher/care provider. Teachers play a critical role in educating and socializing young children by creating positive social emotional learning (SEL) environments. Our work is focused on contributors to teachers’ ability to create those environments – their social-emotional capacity, or SECap as we call it in our lab. Our goal is to better understand teachers’ SECap, its relationship with classroom practices and children’s development, and the best ways to enhance teachers’ well-being so that they can support children’s optimal early development.

Description: Star House is a drop-in center for homeless youth in Central Ohio. We help transitional youth get connected and reconnected with the community. Star House offers a safe place for homeless youth to seek services and begin to establish trust in order to access stabilizing resources such as housing, counseling, and employment opportunities. Because most services are not all within geographic proximity of a homeless youth, Star House provides a distinctive opportunity for those youth to receive integrated behavioral, social, and healthcare services all at one site. As of 2017, Star House is now operated by an independent nonprofit so that it may continue to address community needs, find innovative partners to extend operations cost-efficiently and draw upon a broader range of financial support. Ohio State continues to focus on research that serves the Star House mission. | NOTE: Site no longer exists.
