Title: Social and Emotional Capacity Lab | SECAP

URL: http://secap.osu.edu/

Description: Research has made clear the importance of high quality early childhood education for children, especially those from vulnerable backgrounds. It is also clear that the most important element in early care and education settings is the teacher/care provider. Teachers play a critical role in educating and socializing young children by creating positive social emotional learning (SEL) environments. Our work is focused on contributors to teachers’ ability to create those environments – their social-emotional capacity, or SECap as we call it in our lab. Our goal is to better understand teachers’ SECap, its relationship with classroom practices and children’s development, and the best ways to enhance teachers’ well-being so that they can support children’s optimal early development.

Because most services are not all within geographic proximity of a homeless youth, Star House provides a distinctive opportunity for those youth to receive integrated behavioral, social, and healthcare services all at one site. As of 2017, Star House is now operated by an independent nonprofit so that it may continue to address community needs, find innovative partners to extend operations cost-efficiently and draw upon a broader range of financial support.
