Title: Community Development | First Impressions Program

URL: http://1stimpressions.osu.edu/

Collection: The Ohio State University

Description: Ever wonder what impressions a first-time visitor to your community walks away with? We know what is special about where we live, but do tourists or business travelers find this a place that they would choose to return? Even though the answers to these questions could be so helpful in targeting our community and economic development efforts, we are unlikely to ever gain this knowledge. First Impressions: A Program for Community Improvement provides communities with information concerning how they look and feel to first-time visitors. Data gained through this process can be used to identify what could be improved in your community, enhancing your image to the outside world. There are three program offerings through First Impressions: Community; Program Corridor/Byway Program; Downtown/Main Street Program. Now redirects to https://comdev.osu.edu/

The research projects and software relating computational topology and topological data analysis conducted by this group is reported here. Some of the main achievements of this group is: 1. An algorithm and software (ShortLoop) for computing a shortest basis ( set of loops) for H_1-homology of a simplicial complex. 2. An algorithm and software (SimPers) for computing persistence for Towers (sequence of simplicial complexes connected by simplicial maps) 3. An algorithm and software (SimBa) for approximating persistence diagram of a RIPS filtration. Works with high dimensional and large data in Euclidean and general Metric spaces. 4. An algorithm and software (GraphComp) that computes a distance between two metric graphs using persistence distortion. 5. An algorithm and software (GIC) to produce a sparse complex called Graph Induced Complex for a given finite metric space (points with interpoint distances) 6. Reserach on extension of Mapper, which we call Multiscale Mapper. 7. Research on topological analysis of Reeb Graphs.

Title: Home | Root Biotic Interactions Laboratory

URL: http://RBIL.osu.edu/

Collection: The Ohio State University

Description: While plant roots are involved in obtaining water and nutrients from soil, they also develop complex biotic relationships with micro- and macro-organisms in the soil. These relationships range from mutual symbiosis to those of parasitism and pathogenesis. The lab's interests are in examining both the symbiotic and parasitic interactions of organisms with plant roots. In particular, we are interested in the molecular and biochemical basis that allows organisms to interact with roots and other organisms and in identifying genes that regulate these processes. By studying these processes, we can develop new models to explain how soil-borne organisms communicate with plants and other organisms and how limited resources are either competed for or are shared. These models will provide a better understanding of how soil-borne organisms that cause disease can be managed in a more sustainable manner and positively influence modern-day agriculture.

Description: Welcome to the student chapter of ACM at The Ohio State University. ACM is the the world's leading professional organization for computing professionals of all kinds. One of the main goals of the chapter is to prepare students to compete in the ACM regional and world final programming competitions. Preparation isn't only for this year's competition -- it's to build a strong base for years to come. We want to maintain a competitive edge by maintaining a strong CIS/CSE department that supports this kind of activity. We are striving to have as many students participating as possible so that our names will be recognized not only on the regional level, but internationally as well. Student groups at other universities have been internationally recognized for their programming skills for a long time, but it's not too late for Ohio State students. The competitions will not only be useful for honing your programming skills, but they will also help open doors for students seeking higher positions in major software companies and those seeking further academic accomplishments. We meet every week to discuss new algorithms and problems. We will hold several competitions to rank students and select the teams to compete in the regional and world final competition. CIS, CSE & ECE Students are welcome to apply. C/C++ or Java experience is required. | NOTE: Site has not existed since 2017

Title: Acoustics and Dynamics Laboratory

URL: http://adl.engineering.osu.edu/

Collection: The Ohio State University

Description: Focus of Research and Graduate Education: Machine dynamics, acoustics and vibrations; and Non-linear dynamics and signal processing. | Key Application Areas: Automotive noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) control; and Geared system dynamics and acoustics (automotive and rotorcraft systems). This graduate education and research laboratory is concerned with the analysis, design and synthesis of automotive and mechanical transmission systems for reducing noise, shock and vibration; development of inter-relationships between dynamic forces and motions in rigid or elastic machine elements; study of complex acoustic sources and transmission paths; techniques for passive and active noise control; and digital signal processing for sound quality, system identification, and diagnostics. Since most mechanical systems exhibit significant nonlinearities associated with clearance nonlinearities (such as backlash and multi-staged springs), dry or sliding friction, finite amplitudes, etc., nonlinear dynamic studies are emphasized. Refer to the journal publications where over 200 articles have been posted; these provide specific information on the knowledge generated. Major facilities include several two, four and eight channel FFT analyzers, laser scanning system; modal testing systems, acoustic intensity probes, hemi-anechoic and reverberation rooms and an assortment of exciters and transducers. Computer-aided analysis, design and testing software including finite element and boundary element programs are also available.

Description: Private and public dollars to address erosion and nutrient-loss concerns from agricultural production fields are limited. A cost-effective way to reduce erosion and nutrient loss is to identify field situations that have higher risk critical resource concerns and then match Best Management Practices (BMP’s) for implementation to address the field situations.Private and public dollars available to address erosion and nutrient loss concerns from agricultural production fields are limited. Professionals from soil and water conservation districts (SWCDs), state agencies, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) have limited resources to cover the watershed to identify critical concerns for farmers and landowners. Fortunately, many critical concerns have obvious visual keys that farmers and landowners can use to identify the critical concerns so that they can then seek assistance to address the concerns with BMPs. These visual keys can be observed in the landscape and as agronomic plans are reviewed and then brought to professionals in conservation to develop plans to address.
