Title: CLINICOVERY, a versatile, high quality, environmental-friendly, easy to use e-Clinical solution for clinical research

URL: http://apploading.com/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: The biomedical research is the key to reduce disease burden, and yields economic returns both through improved health gains (a healthy workforce) and through commercial exploitation of research outputs. The increasing disease burden has propelled the pharmaceutical industry to bring up new chemical entities into the market at a higher rate, increasing the number of clinical trials and generating huge quantum of clinical data. As a result, clinical trials are becoming increasingly complex, due the use of multiple data capture modalities (paper and pencil or/and Electronic Data Capture systems (EDC)), which require long implementation time, maintenance, upgrades and high economic investment, the need to evaluate more study endpoints and regulatory compliance with Medical Agencies and the growing number of stakeholders participating in the study.

Title: Breakthrough technology for managing and purchasing translation services guaranteBreakthrough technology for managing and purchasing translation services guaranteeing transparency, savings and quality

URL: http://aqrate.biz/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Aqrate is the SaaS changing the way companies handle and purchase translation services. It is a web platform designed to support companies and organisations who translate high volumes of documentation. Translations might seem like a simple process to handle, but for companies around Europe who require thousands of words translated per week, the reality is much more complex and costly. There are thousands of companies spending over €50,000 per year and many spend over €100,000. The main issue for translation buyers today is that cost estimates are provided by language service providers (LSPs) themselves, and buyers are given little transparency on the process. This creates a clear conflict of interest because companies producing large volumes of text for translation tend to entrust their content to one LSP with no visibility or feedback on word counts and translation quality. Purchasing translation services on the market is therefore like putting fuel in your car without knowing how much fuel is in the tank or how much you are adding. Aqrate provides companies with a meter to overcome this market asymmetry and level the playing field. Our approach is completely unique in the industry and was created to give companies control of their translations and allows them to use multiple vendors. Our software separates content analysis from translation to reduce costs and improve the quality of the entire process. Our market tests show that we can deliver companies 30% savings on their yearly translation costs. We have a clear value proposition that resonates in the market, and we believe that within three years of market launch we will be generating €6 million per year. We will use Phase 1 to conduct valuable market validation and targeting studies while also completing our due diligence process around remaining software development areas. Our estimated total funding required: to reach TRL 9 is €2.2 M which we plan to fund via private financing and a Phase 2 project.

Title: Decontamination by glycosylation based wipes

URL: http://aquilabioscience.com/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: The increasing cross-border and cross-continental movement of people, goods and food, together with the global terrorism threat, have enormous potential to affect the emergence and spread of infectious diseases, including those caused by biothreat agents. Filling the need and gap in the marker for highly-portable, broadly-specific decontamination methods, Aquila BioScience has developed a novel Glyco-DeCon system. At the development stage the unique combination of sugars capturing biothreat agents was identified by using a novel microarray technology. In the Glyco-DeCon wipe, the sugars are chemically attached to the surface of a pre-treated, self-contained cellulose-based material. This approach targets natural binding sites of the biothreat agents and offers a non-toxic alternative to the harsh chemical decontamination methods. The Glyco-DeCon wipe is the safest method for biological decontamination described so far and can be used on human skin as well as the delicate surfaces of the mucosal epithelia or the human eye. Moreover, the product uses natural compounds like cotton and purified proteins reducing the environmental burden of toxic chemical approaches. The Glyco-DeCon kit is intended to become part of all first responder kits.

Title: A sub-percent distance scale from binaries and Cepheids

URL: http://araucaria.camk.edu.pl

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: We propose to carry out a project which will produce a decisive step towards improving the accuracy of the Hubble constant as determined from the Cepheid-SN Ia method to 1%, by using 28 extremely rare eclipsing binary systems in the LMC which offer the potential to determine their distances to 1%. To achieve this accuracy we will reduce the main error in the binary method by interferometric angular diameter measurements of a sample of red clump stars which resemble the stars in our binary systems. We will check on our calibration with similar binary systems close enough to determine their orbits from interferometry. We already showed the feasibility of our method which yielded the best-ever distance determination to the LMC of 2.2% from 8 such binary systems. With 28 systems and the improved angular diameter calibration we will push the LMC distance uncertainty down to 1% which will allow to set the zero point of the Cepheid PL relation with the same accuracy using the large available LMC Cepheid sample. We will determine the metallicity effect on Cepheid luminosities by a) determining a 2% distance to the more metal-poor SMC with our binary method, and by b) measuring the distances to LMC and SMC with an improved Baade-Wesselink (BW) method. We will achieve this improvement by analyzing 9 unique Cepheids in eclipsing binaries in the LMC our group has discovered which allow factor- of-ten improvements in the determination of all basic physical parameters of Cepheids. These studies will also increase our confidence in the Cepheid-based H0 determination. Our project bears strong synergy to the Gaia mission by providing the best checks on possible systematic uncertainties on Gaia parallaxes with 200 binary systems whose distances we will measure to 1-2%. We will provide two unique tools for 1-3 % distance determinations to individual objects in a volume of 1 Mpc, being competitive to Gaia already at a distance of 1 kpc from the Sun.

Title: Algebraic Representations in Computer-Aided Design for complEx Shapes

URL: http://arcades-network.eu/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: ARCADES aims at disrupting the traditional paradigm in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) by exploiting cutting-edge research in mathematics and algorithm design. Geometry is now a critical tool in a large number of key applications; somewhat surprisingly, however, several approaches of the CAD industry are outdated, and 3D geometry processing is becoming increasingly the weak link. This is alarming in sectors where CAD faces new challenges arising from fast point acquisition, big data, and mobile computing, but also in robotics, simulation, animation, fabrication and manufacturing where CAD strives to address crucial societal and market needs. The challenge taken up by ARCADES is to invert the trend of CAD industry lagging behind mathematical breakthroughs and to build the next generation of CAD software based on strong foundations from algebraic geometry, differential geometry, scientific computing, and algorithm design. Our game-changing methods lead to real-time modelers for architectural geometry and visualisation, to isogeometric and design-through-analysis software for shape optimisation, and marine design & hydrodynamics, and to tools for motion design, robot kinematics, path planning, and control of machining tools. One of the Network SMEs estimates that the innovative impact of ARCADES may enable them to get ahead of competition for up to 2 years, thus benefiting about 40% of their customers. The participants span a multidisciplinary and multisectoral spectrum for realising our vision, all being international leaders at various stages of the pipeline. They form an outstanding ecosystem for training the next generation of applied mathematicians, computer scientists and engineers for achieving our scientific breakthroughs, and who are equipped with a double career advantage: excellent research training, and exposure to industrial research environments through a nexus of secondments among Universities, Research and Innovation Centers, and industrial teams.

Title: Industrial scale recovery of high-grade proteins from food-processing by-products

URL: http://arhel.si/en/references/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Demand for plant and animal proteins is rapidly growing and will double in 2050. Also, the demand for high-quality dairy proteins is set to rise dramatically as consumers begin to realise their full potential. Alternative sources will need to be exploited to meet the demand. Meanwhile, more than 200 mio tons of whey is produced annually worldwide, and less than 50% is used for human consumption. Much of it still represents an environmental burden (with BOD 35-55gO2/L). While whey is usually further processed by large dairies, small and medium-sized, as well as emerging biotechnology companies that use whey as a substrate, are confronted with a lack of adequate technologies for optimal utilisation of the full potential of whey. On the other side, there is a growing market demand for high-quality (pure and biologically active) individual whey proteins and their hydrolysates. We aim to disrupt the existing market of protein extracts by introducing a novel approach to the extraction of high-valued & high-purity proteins from the food industry by-products. We aim to start with the dairy industry, introducing the extraction of targeted whey proteins with the highest purity and activity in the frame of the integrated whey management concept. Our goal is to establish (1) production facility for extraction of proteins from different resources, starting with own production and sale of superior quality mayor and minor whey proteins with the use of surplus whey of surrounding dairies, (2) proceed with the technology replication to other medium-sized dairies, milk-biorefineries and biotechnology plants, (3) and servicing development of protein extraction methods and scale-up processes from other resources using our IP and infrastructure. The SME1 project will aim at validating the technology concept, refining the analysis on risks and opportunities, fine-tuning the commercialisation strategy and secure pre-commercial trial in SME2.

Title: Artificial Retrieval of Information Assistants - Virtual Agents with Linguistic Understanding, Social skills, and Personalised Aspects

URL: http://aria-agent.eu/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: The ARIA-VALUSPA project will create a ground-breaking new framework that will allow easy creation of Artificial Retrieval of Information Assistants (ARIAs) that are capable of holding multi-modal social interactions in challenging and unexpected situations. The system can generate search queries and return the information requested by interacting with humans through virtual characters. These virtual humans will be able to sustain an interaction with a user for some time, and react appropriately to the user's verbal and non-verbal behaviour when presenting the requested information and refining search results. Using audio and video signals as input, both verbal and non-verbal components of human communication are captured. Together with a rich and realistic emotive personality model, a sophisticated dialogue management system decides how to respond to a user's input, be it a spoken sentence, a head nod, or a smile. The ARIA uses special speech synthesisers to create emotionally coloured speech and a fully expressive 3D face to create the chosen response. Back-channelling, indicating that the ARIA understood what the user meant, or returning a smile are but a few of the many ways in which it can employ emotionally coloured social signals to improve communication.

Title: Atmospheric dynamics Research InfraStructure in Europe

URL: http://arise-project.eu/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: It has been robustly demonstrated that variations in the circulation of the middle atmosphere influence weather and climate throughout the troposphere all the way to the Earth’s surface. A key part of the coupling between the troposphere and stratosphere occurs through the propagation and breaking of planetary-scale Rossby waves and gravity waves. Limited observation of the middle atmosphere and these waves in particular limits the ability to faithfully reproduce the dynamics of the middle atmosphere in numerical weather prediction and climate models. ARISE2 capitalizes upon the work of the EU-funded first ARISE project combining for the first time international networks with complementary technologies such as infrasound, lidar and airglow. This joint network provided advanced data products that started to be used as benchmarks for weather forecast models. The ARISE network also allows enhanced and detailed monitoring of other extreme events in the Earth system such as erupting volcanoes, magnetic storms, tornadoes and tropical thunderstorms. In order to improve the ability of the network to monitor atmospheric dynamics, ARISE2 proposes to extend i) the existing network coverage in Africa and the high latitudes, ii) the altitude range in the stratosphere and mesosphere, iii) the observation duration using routine observation modes, and to use complementary existing infrastructures and innovative instrumentations. Data will be collected over the long term to improve weather forecasting to monthly or seasonal timescales, to monitor atmospheric extreme events and climate change. Compared to the first ARISE project, ARISE2 focuses on the link between models and observations for future assimilation of data by operational weather forecasting models. Among the applications, ARISE2 proposes infrasound remote volcano monitoring to provide notifications to civil aviation. The data portal will provide high-quality data and advanced data products to a wide scientific community.

Title: A minimally invasive, outpatient treatment for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), resulting in permanent relief from both GERD symptoms and life-long drug dependency

URL: http://ascentxmedical.com/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a digestive disorder associated with symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation, and reflux of normal gastric content like gastric acid and digestive enzymes. GERD is caused by a loss of integrity of the gastro-esophageal barrier known as the 'lower esophageal sphincter' (LES). This condition is one of the most common gastroenterological diagnosis in the European Union, with an estimated 15-20 Million daily sufferers. GERD today is typically treated with medications such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Unfortunately, these anti-acid medications only ‘mask’ GERD symptoms, cause severe side-effects long-term, and about 20% of patients are non-responders. Importantly, they do not treat/cure the underlying root cause of acid reflux. For people who have severe GERD and do not respond to

Title: Effect of land use induced shifts in soil microbial diversity and function on carbon cycling in soil

URL: http://ashishmalik.weebly.com/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: The need for improved food production for the growing population has led to increase in planet’s arable land cover. Many studies suggest that such practices lead to loss of soil organic carbon (C) – a relatively large C pool with a fast response time. Thus there is a need to manage soils sustainably in order to mitigate atmospheric CO2 levels while maintaining agricultural productivity. Soil microorganisms act as gatekeepers for soil-atmosphere C exchange by regulating the storage and release of organic C in soil. However, there is a lack of understanding on how land use induced shifts in soil microbial diversity affects this regulation; necessitating detailed research on the underpinning microbial mechanisms. The project objective is to discern the effects of land use on microbial diversity in differing soil types and to investigate whether this shift has implications for C cycling (do certain microbial groups have a greater capacity for soil C accumulation?). To address these objectives an interdisciplinary approach merging molecular biology and isotope chemistry will be employed. Soil from long-term grassland-arable paired sites will be used to assess differences in microbial biodiversity and functional gene abundance through DNA next-generation sequencing. In addition, a field incubation experiment with 13C labelled substrates will be performed to investigate the variable tracer incorporation into different microbial functional groups. This will be measured using novel magnetic bead capture hybridization of RNA from specific groups followed by its 13C analysis using liquid chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry. The novelty of this project is that it aims to provide direct evidence to prove diversity-function linkages and gain mechanistic understanding of the physiological responses of soil microbial communities to land use change. The resulting knowledge will help better predict changes in soil C and thus improve prognosis of climate change feedbacks.

Title: ARCGATE: maximizing the potential of Arctic Ocean Gateway array

URL: http://asof.awi.de/index.php/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Predictions that the Arctic Ocean might be ice-free by the middle of the 21st century are of major social, economic, political and scientific interest. Making sensible decisions on European Arctic economic development requires that scientific knowledge and data are more accessible and usable by both academics and non-academics alike. ARCGATE aims to obtain innovative physical and biogeochemical budgets for the Arctic Ocean based on the Arctic gateway observations. Integrating Arctic gateway observations the applicant has recently developed an innovative method to obtain quasi-synoptic and time varying comprehensive budget estimates using a box inverse model. The main objective of ARCGATE is to extend the inverse box model methodology to calculate multi-year Arctic heat and fresh water (FW) budget variations during 2004-2010, including import of heat, export of FW and storage of both. Over 20 million euro has already been spent on Arctic observations during this period. The host institute of this proposal holds about half of historical Arctic gateway observations. The obtained budget estimates will be disseminated and exploited through an open data policy. Furthermore, ARCGATE aims to push disciplinary and sectional boundaries. By applying the same pan-Arctic approach, the total alkalinity budget for summer 2005 will be calculated. A sound estimate of the total alkalinity budget will significantly advance understanding of the entire carbonate system of the Arctic Ocean. Mobility from UK to Germany is key to the success of ARCGATE enabling synthesis of the pan-Arctic inverse box-model developed in UK over the last six years with state-of-the-art estimates of Arctic Ocean heat, FW storage changes in time, and a new interpretation of total alkalinity all developed at the host institute for this project. Close links to the commercial Arctic shipping sector will be developed by disseminating the results of ARCGATE at international shipping conferences.

Title: Quantum control of levitated massive mechanical systems: a new approach for gravitational quantum physics

URL: http://aspelmeyer.quantum.at/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Quantum physics and general relativity are probably the most successful and well-tested theories of modern science. At the same time, their fundamental concepts are so dramatically different that there is disagreement on the most obvious questions such as “how does a mass in a quantum superposition state gravitate?“. Achieving progress on such foundational questions requires experiments at the interface between quantum physics and gravity, of which to date only a few of exist. The main objective of the proposed research is to establish quantum control of levitated massive objects as a new paradigm system for such experiments and to enter a hitherto inaccessible parameter regime of large mass and long quantum coherence.

Title: Assessing SNOMED CT for Large Scale eHealth Deployments in the EU

URL: http://assess-ct.eu/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: ASSESS CT will contribute to better semantic interoperability of eHealth services in Europe, in order to optimise care and to minimise harm in delivery of care. In a joint one-year effort, the ASSESS CT consortium will investigate the fitness of the clinical terminology SNOMED CT as a potential standard for EU-wide eHealth deployments, scrutinising clinical, technical, financial, and organisational aspects. Unbiased towards SNOMED CT adoption, the ASSESS CT project will employ established evaluation approaches from social science. It will scrutinise adoption against two alternative scenarios: to abstain from actions at the EU level, or to devise an EU-wide semantic interoperability framework without SNOMED CT. ASSESS CT will review the current state of SNOMED CT through survey and focus group, regarding its use by IHTSDO members and the fulfilment of semantic interoperability use cases, the relationship with EU-wide recommendations, known technical and organisational drawbacks, and maintenance of the terminology. A series of studies using sampled clinical data will provide new evidence about conceptual and term coverage for selected languages, as well as technical fitness in manual and automated semantic annotation scenarios. The consortium will also analyse the impact of SNOMED CT adoption from a socio-economic viewpoint, encompassing management, business, organisational, and governance aspects. Validation of all working tasks, both political and domain-specific, will be secured through four large workshops with a list of distinguished experts assembled in an Expert Panel, Committee of MS Representatives, and national focus groups. Sufficient budget is reserved, also for coordination across the parallel H2020 Call PHC34 projects. Concrete strategy recommendations will be delivered to both MS, the EC, and SDOs about how SNOMED CT can scale up successful adoption and contribute to building a EU eHealth Interoperability Framework.

Title: Advanced Superconducting Motor Experimental Demonstrator

URL: http://asumed.oswald.de/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Air traffic is projected to grow worldwide by 5% per year resulting in increasing fossil fuel consumption and emissions. Previous studies have shown that hybrid-electric distributed propulsion (DP) in civilian aircraft offers a route to achieve the massive reductions in fuel consumption and emission targeted by Flightpath 2050. These studies identify the necessity of potential superconducting solutions to achieve the required power densities and efficiencies. However, no suitable superconductive motor is available to realize DP in large aircraft and no prototypes have been constructed with this aim. The purpose of the project is to demonstrate the benefits of a new fully superconducting motor with a power density of 20kW/kg. In particular, the ASuMED project will: design an appropriate motor topology, develop a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) stator with an electric loading of >450kA/m, develop a rotor using HTS stacks operating like permanent magnets providing an average magnetic loading of >2.5 T, integrate a magnetization system into the stator area, implement a light, highly efficient cryostat for the motor combined with an integrated cryogenic cooling system and associated power converter.

Title: Differential Higgs distributions as a unique window to New Physics at the LHC

URL: http://atlas.desy.de/external_grants/kerstin_tackmann_erc/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: In 2012, the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN announced a ground-breaking discovery: both experiments observed a new particle. Subsequent measurements confirmed it to be a Higgs boson. In the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, which describes the known elementary particles and their interactions, as well as in many extensions of the SM, the Higgs boson is fundamentally linked to the question of how elementary particles acquire mass. A thorough program of measurements is necessary to determine if this particle has indeed the properties of a Higgs boson as predicted by the SM or one of its extensions, and to gain a complete understanding of the mass generation for elementary particles. Studies of the Higgs sector now open a unique window to the discovery of New Physics.

Title: Entangled Twin Atom Beams

URL: http://atomchip.org/rubidium-ii/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Many of the fascinating phenomena predicted by quantum mechanics, like non-local correlations and entanglement, were implemented with photons in the framework of quantum optics. It is today a mature field with applications emerging in cryptography, random number generation, and quantum computation. Based on the analogy between matter waves and electromagnetic waves and on particle-wave duality, quantum atom optics started to develop recently, thanks to the development of tools for matter wave manipulation. A crucial point for the success of quantum optics was the availability of twin-photon sources, based on a non-linear medium. Very recently, several approaches towards realizing twin-atom pairs have been investigated (most notably by the applicant and the host institution of this proposal) and successfully realized. The ETAB project will use this new twin atom beam (TAB) source to implement quantum atom optics experiments. Characterization of the resulting strongly correlated states will be performed through measurement of correlation functions. These experiments will go beyond the analogy with quantum optics due to fundamental differences between atoms and photons: mass and intrinsic nonlinearity due to interactions. This second property allows high efficiency twin atom beam generation, with an important pump depletion. This allows us to investigate new physics, including beyond linear response, quantum simulation, and non-equilibrium physics. Furthermore, by preparing the twin beams in an entangled state, we will perform the first test of Bell inequalities with untrapped atoms, which could rule out spontaneous decoherence or gravitational nonlinearity models.

In order to do so, our cognitive strategies need to adjust accordingly (a process we term “adaptive control”).The auditory sensory modality poses an excellent, although under-utilised, research model to understand these adjustments, their neural basis, and their large variation amongst individuals. Hearing abilities begin to decline already in the fourth life decade, and our guiding hypothesis is that individuals differ in the extent to which they are neurally, cognitively, and psychologically equipped to adapt to this sensory decline.

Title: A Theory of Reference for Distributional Semantics

URL: http://aurelieherbelot.net/threds/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: One of the most fundamental human faculties is 'reference': the capacity to 'talk about things'. This extraordinary ability is at the core of many forms of human exchange, from asking for the salt at the dinner table to collaboratively building a solar probe. It involves using linguistic signs to identify things in the world and bring them to the mind of another. Reference is poorly understood: in particular, we do not know how humans build a shared linguistic representation of their environment, which they use to link words and world. My goal is to build a computational model of the way people acquire world knowledge from language and translate knowledge back into language. My overall framework includes three steps: 1) creating a representation of the way people 'talk about things', using distributional semantics (DS: a computational approach to modelling word usage); 2) automatically mapping the distributional model onto a partial set-theoretic model (a formal knowledge representation expressing shared beliefs about the world); 3) using the set-theoretic model to generate unobserved linguistic expressions which refer. The pipeline will be evaluated via an online game where a computer has to produce references to well-known concepts and individuals for a human tester. This work will significantly advance the state-of-the-art in linguistics: while DS has enjoyed considerable success in modelling lexical phenomena, it is currently showing its limits in explaining referential aspects of meaning. Conversely, referential semantics is still far from fully explaining the cognitive aspects of concept acquisition and reuse. The proposed investigation requires a very novel integration of computational semantics (my area of expertise) and formal linguistics (in which my host is an internationally recognised expert). The collaboration will give us the chance to lead a burgeoning area of research aiming at integrating reference into DS.

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Current practice is such that a production system is designed and optimized to execute the exact same process over and over again. The planning and control of production systems has become increasingly complex regarding flexibility and productivity, as well as the decreasing predictability of processes. The full potential of open CPS has yet to be fully realized in the context of cognitive autonomous production systems. SMEs face additional challenges to the implementation of “cloudified” automation processes. While the building blocks for digital automation are available, it is up to the SMEs to align, connect and integrate them together to meet the needs of their individual advanced manufacturing processes. Moreover, SMEs face difficulties to make decisions on strategic automation investments that will boost their business strategy. AUTOWARE objective is to build three distinct pillars to form a multi-sided ecosystem. (1) From the BeinCPPS, leverage a reference architecture (fully aligned with CRYSTAL and EMC2 CPS design practices and ARROWHEAD cloudification approach) across I4MS competence domains (cloud,CPPS, robotics), acting as a glue that will attract potential users and developers to a friendly ecosystem for business development, more efficient service development over harmonized architectures (smart machine, cloudified control, cognitive planning- app-ized operation). (2) To leverage a number of SME enablers; e.g. augmented virtuality, reliable wireless communications, CPPS trusted auto-configuration, smart data distribution and cognitive planning to ease cognitive autonomous systems. Finally, to leverage digital automation investments. AUTOWARE brings together the best of breed ARTEMISIA/ECSEL platforms, I4MS innovation, SAFIR business platforms and neutral experimental sites (robotics & process). AUTOWARE assets will be evaluated in two industrial pilots, PWR and SCM, and will offer well established industry and start-ups new business opportunities.

Title: Paired Electrochemical Oxidation process for feasible industrial production of the crucial FDCA building block for the bioplastic industry

URL: http://ava-biochem.com/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: AVA Biochem is a specialty chemicals company and produces the premium platform chemical 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from renewable biomass. We are the owner of the world’s 1st industrial plant for production of 5-HMF from biomass. Recently the company has added 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) to its product portfolio. FDCA is considered as a top 12 Top Value-Added Chemicals, which can be used in a wide variety of applications, most significantly in the production of Polyethylene Furanoate (PEF), a polyester ideal for packaging. Most plastic bottles are made from PET (oil-based polyethylene terephthalate) but PEF is a superior polymer. It offers a better barrier for CO2 and O2, is stronger but thinner and has a longer shelf life. PEF is a bio-based substitute for oil-based PET. However, in the market, there is not an industrial commercial process to produce FDCA because of the price. After a long R&D way, we offers an HMF from biomass, which a price more than 2000% lower than currently. Diverse approaches for the oxidation of HMF to FDCA have been developed usually with uncompleted conversion. However, we have developed a continuous, integrated pilot plant for the oxidation of HMF in water with paired electrochemical oxidation to obtain FDCA and its purification. This technology has advantages since the oxidant is substituted by electrons, and the oxidation occurs at both anode and cathode, thus the produced waste and energy are minimized. Applying this concept we obtain FDCA with yields >99% in the lab and a purity of 99.95 wt%. The selectivity is >90% without any dangerous by-products. The process also takes place in water so neither hazardous organic solvents are necessary. It is considered as a green process because an energy savings of 66% and GHG emissions reductions by 35% are realized. Thus, the bio-based FDCA end-product will be offered to the market at much lower price than currently, having a crucial role to play in the PEF bioplastic packaging.

Title: Detecting changes in essential ecosystem and biodiversity properties – towards a Biosphere Atmosphere Change Index: BACI

URL: http://baci-h2020.eu/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: The alarming rate of biodiversity loss and ecosystem transitions make it clear that new strategies are required to sustain functioning of the coupled ecological-societal system. Existing space data archives and data streams from the ESA Sentinels, offer unprecedented opportunities to provide rapid, high quality indicators necessary for informed management of key ecosystem services. Yet, it remains largely unclear how space and ground-based observations can be optimally integrated to generate products required by end user communities (Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, 2014). By fusing extensive expertise on optical and radar remote sensing, ground data on ecosystem state and function, “big data” scientists, and active participation of user groups, BACI will advance this integration. BACI will translate space data to new variables (not directly observable from space) that encode ecosystem functional properties and status metrics. This will empower concepts of “essential biodiversity variables”. Advanced machine learning methods will be employed to reveal new and fundamental relationships between space observations and ecosystem status. BACI will incorporate a wide range of original data and downstream data products specifically targeting needs for early-warning systems, including a novel “Biosphere-Atmosphere Change Index”. We will prioritize selected key European and African regions now undergoing massive societal-ecological transformations, offering perspective towards operational assessments. A formal attribution framework will disentangle climate-induced ecosystem changes and socioeconomic/ecological transformation processes. Overall, BACI will advance usage of European space data to monitor relevant vegetation traits, status, and ecosystem functioning. By capitalizing on existing datasets, we will prototype new algorithms to rapidly implement these metrics and thus space-to-ground integration of the new ESA Sentinels.

Title: Personalised Prognostic Models to Improve Well-being and Return to Work After Neck and Low Back Pain

URL: http://backup-project.eu/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Neck and low back pain (NLBP) are leading causes for years lived with disability in Europe and worldwide. About 70% of all adults experience NLBP at some point in their lives, and both conditions are among the top ten in terms of overall disease burden expressed as disability adjusted life years. Management of NLBP is a difficult challenge for healthcare professionals since their decisions have a decisive impact on the patient’s future health and welfare, as well as on the economic burden on the public and private healthcare systems. However, health professionals often lack appropriate information to tailor the management and follow-up of individual patients and to predict the outcome of a certain treatment. At European level, diverse research initiatives are undergoing at this moment for tackling NLBP from diverse angles, including biomarkers (PainOmics), pain self-management (selfBACK), lifestyle and workplace conditions (AHA), or patients stratification (STarT Back). Back-UP project provides a wider vision of NLBP, bringing together the research groups that are leading these and other innovative approaches to create a prognostic model to underpin more effective and efficient management of NLBP based on the digital representation of multidimensional clinical information and on simulations of the outcomes of possible interventions. Patient-specific models will provide a personalised evaluation of the patient case, using multidimensional health data from the following sources: personal, health, psychological, behavioural, and socioeconomic factors related to NLBP; biological patient characteristics, including musculoskeletal structures and function, and molecular data; and workplace and lifestyle risk factors. Back-UP will provide health, well-being and economic benefits to different user profiles (clinicians, employers / insurance companies and patients) and will create a channel for sharing information during the rehabilitation and return to work process.

Title: Finding noncoding cancer drivers

URL: http://bbglab.irbbarcelona.org

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Finding the mutations, genes and pathways directly involved in cancer is of paramount importance to understand the mechanisms of tumour development and devise therapeutic strategies to overcome the disease. Due to their role in cancer development and maintenance, the proteins encoded by cancer genes are candidate therapeutic targets. Indeed, in recent years we have witnessed the development of successful cancer-targeting therapies to counteract the effect of driver mutations. Although the coding part of the human genome has now largely been explored in the search for cancer driver mutations in most frequent cancer types, the extent of involvement of noncoding mutations in cancer development remains a mystery. The main challenges faced are: 1) the functional role of most noncoding regions is unknown, and 2) tumours often have thousands of somatic mutations, so that distinguishing cancer driver mutations from bystanders is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. To overcome these two challenges I propose to analyse the pattern of somatic mutations across thousands of tumours in noncoding regions to identify signals of positive selection. These signals are an indication that mutations in the region have been positively selected during tumour evolution and are thus directly involved in the tumour phenotype. The large scale analysis proposed here will allow us to create a catalogue of noncoding elements involved in different types of cancer upon mutations. We will study in detail a selected set of driver elements to uncover their specific function and role in the tumourigenic process. Furthermore, we will explore possibilities of counteracting their driver effect with targeted drugs. The results of this project may boost our understanding of the biological role of noncoding regions, help to unravel novel molecular causes of cancer and provide novel targeted therapeutic opportunities for cancer patients.

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: The overall objective of the project is to develop and test the tools necessary for the assessment of the hydro-mechanical evolution of an installed bentonite barrier and its resulting performance. This will be achieved by cooperation between design and engineering, science and performance assessment. The evolution from an installed engineered system to a fully functioning barrier will be assessed. One of the challenges is to take into account initial heterogeneities introduced in the system by conception with a combination of block and pellets or due to the size of the bentonite component (several 100 m3). It will require a more detailed understanding of material properties, of the fundamental processes that lead to homogenisation, of the role of scale effects and improved capabilities for numerical modelling. The goal is to verify the performance of current designs for buffers, backfills, seals and plugs. The overall driver for the project is the assessment cases that will be defined at the onset of the project (WP1). The quantitative models currently available are not fully able to represent all the complexities of the evolution of an installed bentonite. A substantial effort is needed to improve both the conceptual approaches and the numerical solutions in the current models (WP3). The updated/newly developed models need to be tested and verified using available data (WP5). There are some areas where fundamental data and the understanding of materials are incomplete. An efficient experimental programme will support model development and testing (WP4). There is already a large database from experiments performed within EC projects and national programmes, both laboratory and Underground Research Laboratory (URL) experiments. Many of the tests have been performed with other purposes in mind, but the results can be used in the Beacon project. The objective of WP2 is to collect the relevant information and process it to a level where it can be used in this project

Title: Affective neurocognitive model for the ‘Uncanny Valley’

URL: http://beatricedegelder.com/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: The Uncanny Valley hypothesis (UV), proposed already 45 years ago, suggests that too humanlike robots or other artificial characters will elicit feelings of eeriness (Jpn. ‘bukimi’) in human observers. Existing psychological and neuroimaging studies have focused on the humanlikeness dimension of UV but neglected its emotional experience, which was at the heart of the original hypothesis. This interdisciplinary project will develop a thorough model for the emotional dimension of UV, consisting both of subjective verbal descriptions and observed neuronal activation patterns. A series of neuroimaging experiments will be carried out at the Brain and Emotion Laboratory of Maastricht University (UM): the first experiment will test the neuronal correlates of negative emotions elicited by semi-realistic virtual characters, and the second experiment will take a step beyond the original UV hypothesis by comparing the neuronal activation patterns of real and virtual emotional expressions. A self-report questionnaire for verbalizing the emotional experience of UV will be developed during a secondment period at Eindhoven University of Technology (Tu/e). By explicating the emotional experience of UV and by providing open tools for both research and industry, this project will be an important turning point for the future development of all humanlike technologies. Consistently, direct and concrete contacts with the animation industry are planned during the project. My supervisor Prof. de Gelder from UM is one of the thought leaders in the field of affective cognitive neuroscience, and my secondment supervisor Prof. Ijsselsteijn from Tu/e is renowned for his work in human-technology interaction. I am an experienced researcher with a dual background in both of these disciplines, as well as specific background in UV topic. This interdisciplinary synergy will maximize this project’s impact on the European society and help establish my position as a leading independent scientist.

Title: Scanning SQUID view of emergent states at interfaces

URL: http://beenalab.biu.ac.il/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: The emergence of novel states of matter in low-dimensional systems is one of the most intriguing current topics in condensed matter physics. For instance, interfaces between certain non-magnetic insulating oxides were shown to give rise to surprising metallic, superconducting, and magnetic states, which are still far from being understood. I have recently demonstrated in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 that there is a strong influence of the constituent’s structure on the interface conductivity (quasi-1D rather than 2D) and sub-micron ferromagnetic patches that coexist with inhomogeneous superconductivity. However, the origin of the interface magnetism, its relation to transport properties, and the mechanisms that control the different interface states are yet to be understood. I believe that the only way to fully understand the electronic and magnetic behavior in reduced dimensions is by combining extremely sensitive, non-invasive, local techniques, but such characterization tools are lacking. The aim of this project is to investigate the rich phenomena that appear at transition metal oxides interfaces, starting with LaAlO3/SrTiO3 as a model system, and expanding to other ground states (e.g. multiferroics, quantum materials, metal-insulator), as well as to other low-dimensional systems, including 2D-superconductors, topological insulators and carbon nanotube coils. To this end, I will develop an advanced scanning SQUID technology for higher temperatures, improved resolution, simultaneous mapping of orthogonal properties, and high throughput. By detecting nano-magnetism, traces of superconductivity, and non-invasively mapping the path of current flow, our tool will detect new states of matter, follow their interactions, correlations, and response to modulation in the local potential with extreme sensitivity. Our results will open up access to fundamental physics in atomically engineered materials, and to the control of their properties for use in next generation nanoelectronics.

Title: Bundling sustainable energy investments for GIrona´s municipalities

URL: http://beenergi.ddgi.cat/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Girona’s municipalities are mainly small so lack the technical or financial capacity to carry out ISE on their own. BEenerGI will support these municipalities from technical, legal and financial points of view. So in the next three years 6.48 MEUR of investments will be mobilized to increase energy efficiency in street lighting in 65 municipalities and 9.40 MEUR will be mobilized in energy efficiency investments in 85 public buildings. BEenerGI specific objectives are: launching sustainable energy investments to strengthen innovative organisational models, establishing and promoting a new funding scheme, capacity building among all key actors involved and final beneficiaries, opening access to energy consumption data and communication of results across Europe. BEenerGI is innovative both for the organisation of project development assistance (PDA) and for its proposed financial engineering. Regarding PDA innovation, the project will join investments in at least 15 packages in order to make them bankable. Regarding the innovation of the proposed financing engineering, BEenerGI will encourage contracts between municipalities and ESCOs or Small and Medium Enterprises-Micro-ESCOs Local energy sector SMEs (local maintainers, local energy suppliers,..). In some cases, Ddgi will give a subsidy of 2 MEUR to municipalities (during the whole period) to make the planned investments in public buildings bankable and to decrease the payback of these investments. BEenerGI foresees using the monitoring system for energetic consumption already installed in Covenant municipalities as a monitoring tool to evaluate the impact and results of the project. BEenerGI will disseminate its results among Covenant Coordinators or other local authorities that want to replicate these innovative organizational models to mobilize bankable bundled IES.

Title: Molecular Motors, powering dynamic functional molecular systems

URL: http://benferinga.com

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: In this proposal the unique properties of unidirectional light driven molecular rotary motors will be built upon to achieve dynamic control of function and develop responsive systems with a particular focus on systems in water. Light-driven molecular rotary motors are distinct from the majority of molecular switches, as they allow sequential access to multiple functional states in a responsive system through non-invasive stimulation. Importantly, continuous irradiation induces continuous rotary motion which provides a unique opportunity to design dynamic systems and responsive materials that can be driven out-of-equilibrium. The research program is divided in four work-packages: a) chemical and redox driven unidirectional motors; here we will develop processive unidirectional motors that can use (electro)chemical energy in a continuous manner, b) amplification of motion; here rotary motors operate in assemblies to amplify mechanical function over a wide range of length scales. Specifically we will use liquid crystal-water interfaces as a unique platform to control motion and organization. c) dissipative self-assembly: molecular motors offer fantastic opportunities to control self-assembly and drive such systems out-of-equilibrium. We aim at metastable aggregate formation (hydrogels) and the design of amphiphilic motors for responsive self-assembled nanostructures; d)triggering biomolecular function; the goal is to use rotary motors to regulate DNA transcription and ultimately as genuine powering device to control cardiac cell function. In the emerging field of photopharmacology, we take advantage of non-invasive high spatio-temporal control that switching with light provides. The proposed research program is highly challenging but provides the comprehensive effort required to achieve control of complex nanomechanical systems and will opening a bright future for applications ranging from stimuli responsive materials to spatio-temporal control of biomolecular systems

Title: Electronic AXONs: wireless microstimulators based on electronic rectification of epidermically applied currents

URL: http://berg.upf.edu/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: To build interfaces between the electronic domain and the human nervous system is one of the most demanding challenges of nowadays engineering. Fascinating developments have already been performed such as visual cortical implants for the blind and cochlear implants for the deaf. Yet implantation of most electrical stimulation systems requires complex surgeries which hamper their use for the development of so-called electroceuticals. More importantly, previously developed systems based on central stimulation units are not adequate for applications in which a large number of sites must be individually stimulated over large and mobile body parts, thus hindering neuroprosthetic solutions for patients suffering paralysis due to spinal cord injury or other neurological disorders. A solution to these challenges could consist in developing addressable single-channel wireless microstimulators which could be implanted with simple procedures such as injection. And, indeed, such solution was proposed and tried in the past. However, previous attempts did not achieve satisfactory success because the developed implants were stiff and too large. Further miniaturization was prevented because of the use of inductive coupling and batteries as energy sources. Here I propose to explore an innovative method for performing electrical stimulation in which the implanted microstimulators will operate as rectifiers of bursts of innocuous high frequency current supplied through skin electrodes shaped as garments. This approach has the potential to reduce the diameter of the implants to one-fifth the diameter of current microstimulators and, more significantly, to allow that most of the implants’ volume consists of materials whose density and flexibility match those of neighbouring living tissues for minimizing invasiveness. In fact, implants based on the proposed method will look like short pieces of flexible thread.

Title: MATERIALIZABLE: Intelligent fabrication-oriented Computational Design and Modeling

URL: http://berndbickel.com/materializable/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: While access to 3D-printing technology becomes ubiquitous and provides revolutionary possibilities for fabricating complex, functional, multi-material objects with stunning properties, its potential impact is currently significantly limited due to the lack of efficient and intuitive methods for content creation. Existing tools are usually restricted to expert users, have been developed based on the capabilities of traditional manufacturing processes, and do not sufficiently take fabrication constraints into account. Scientifically, we are facing the fundamental challenge that existing simulation techniques and design approaches for predicting the physical properties of materials and objects at the resolution of modern 3D printers are too slow and do not scale with increasing object complexity. The problem is extremely challenging because real world-materials exhibit extraordinary variety and complexity.

Title: Boosting plant-Endophyte STability, compatibility and Performance Across ScaleS

URL: http://bestpass.ku.dk/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: We need to increase the crop yield while reducing pesticide and use of inorganic fertiliser to meet the challenges of world population growth and climate change. Plant endophytic microorganisms can improve plant yield and enhance plant tolerance to abiotic stress as well as to pathogens under experimental conditions, but these effects are often not sufficiently stable for practical application. How do we boost the stability and reliability of the positive effects of endophytes on plants? We need to understand the genetic basis of beneficial interactions between crops and endophytes and extent this basis exhibits phenotypic plasticity at all interaction levels from the cellular to the field environment. This requires increasing our knowledge of the molecular mechanisms underlying the effects of endophytes, including intra and inter-kingdom exchange and distribution of resources (nutrients), signalling and possibly regulation between and inside the partners, the mutual induced production of secondary metabolites and the environmental cues which influence crop-endophyte interactions. The genetic variation and its plasticity in host and microbe will be exploited in to establish crop breeding and inoculum production processes for boosting the establishment and stability of plant-microbe mutualisms to benefit crop development, stress tolerance, pathogen resistance and quality. In this project we will provide fundamental biological as well as practical knowledge about interactions between endophytes and plants. This improved understanding will pave the way for increased use of endophytes to improve sustainability and plant productivity in a reliable way. The participants in this project comprise many of the key institutions and industries working with these problems and provide a uniquely strong consortium to address the key issues. Furthermore, the consortium will train a new generation of scientists who have the insight and skills to continue this task in their careers.

Description: Europe´s electricity sector is in the midst of major transformation moving from public monopolies to competitive private companies in liberalized markets. The liberalization is expected to increase competition and thus increase cost-efficiency in energy production, transmission and distribution with the result of decreasing electricity prices. The efforts of Member State governments to create a more competitive and sustainable electricity sector are currently clouded by a major economic downturn in Europe´s economic activity. Such economic hardship often triggers reluctance to change which is becoming visible in particular in the electricity sector, where measures to protect jobs and national industry start to compete with market liberalization. The affordability of sustainable electricity is questioned.

Title: BIG4 - Biosystematics, Informatics and Genetics of the big 4 insect groups: training tomorrow's researchers and entrepreneurs

URL: http://big4-project.eu/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: BIG4 is a global network to amalgamate the cutting edge methods of genomics, phylogenetics, informatics, taxonomy, semantic biodiversity publishing and citizen science, into highly competitive cross-disciplinary training programme for 15 ESRs with a stronghold in biosystematics. These 15 future leaders will extend the exploration of the four biggest groups of living organisms in a more forward looking way than has been attempted before. The urgent focus on the “big four” insect groups, i.e. Coleoptera (beetles), Hymenoptera (wasps, ants and bees), Diptera (flies and mosquitoes), and Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) is justified by the super abundance of this form of Life, and by the growing need by science and society to make better use of the enormous potential hidden in their biological diversity. BIG4 aims [1] to gain a robust systematic knowledge that explains the evolutionary origin, diversification, past and present distributions of living organisms, [2] to model their future dispersal and [3] to predict the traits of species that are yet unknown. Additionally, BIG4 strives for [4] implementing organismal features into engineering, medicine, agricultural or environmental solutions, the insect flight mechanics and more effective pollination to mention just a few. Such knowledge is in a particularly high demand in respect of the four biggest insects groups comprising the most important model organisms, the most dangerous pests or disease vectors, the most abundant invasive species and the most fragile entire species communities undergoing extinction due to habitat destruction. By integrating academia with the business and public sectors, BIG4 will greatly increase services and beneficial products provided by the biosystematics as a science. BIG4 will place insect mega-diversity as a powerful service for economic and societal needs such as environmental monitoring, biological control, biomedicine, or ecological farming.

Description: A powerful strategy for increasing the quality and resolution of medical and biological images is to acquire larger quantities of data (Fourier samples for MRI, projections for X-ray imaging) and to jointly reconstruct the complete signal by correctly reallocating the measurements in 3D space/time and integrating all the information available. The underlying image sequence is reconstructed globally as the result of a very large-scale optimization that exploits the redundancy of the signal (spatio-temporal correlation, sparsity) to improve the solution. Due to recent advances in the field, we are arguing that such a “bigger data” integration is now within reach and that our team is ideally qualified to lead the way. A successful outcome will profoundly impact the design of future bioimaging systems.

Title: BIHC- Bio-inspired models of human crowds

URL: http://bihc-fcul.weebly.com/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: With current consumer-grade personal computers, it is possible to display 3d virtual scenes with thousands of animated individual entities at interactive frame rates. Crowd simulations are, however, too often limited to characters lacking individuality and wandering in an environment without a specific goal. This situation is particularly problematic in the field of cultural heritage in real-time simulations of the past where the realism of individual behavior is critical. This proposal, through a collaboration across the computer science and the archaeology fields, seeks to address this problem. It aims at exploring bio-mimicking techniques in the development of a generative model for heterogeneity and spontaneity in behavioral animation of crowds. More specifically, the goals can be defined as (i) the development of a bio-inspired model of agency for virtual humans (which upgrades a previous prototype, part of my earlier research), (ii) the development of an authoring tool to interact with the parameters of that model and develop context-specific behaviors/animations, and finally (iii) the development of a proof-of-concept - the simulation of a historical environment, with the assistance of non-programmers using the authoring tool developed earlier.

Title: Parallel network-based biocomputation: technological baseline, scale-up and innovation ecosystem

URL: http://bio4comp.org/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Many technologically and societally important mathematical problems are intractable for conventional, serial computers. Therefore, a significant need exists for parallel-computing approaches that are capable to solve such problems within reasonable time frames. Recently, part of our consortium demonstrated proof-of-principle of a parallel-computation system in which a given combinatorial problem is encoded into a graphical, modular network that is embedded in a nanofabricated planar device. The problem is then solved by a large number of independent biological agents, namely molecular-motor-propelled protein filaments, exploring the network in a highly parallel fashion (PNAS 113, 2591 (2016)). Notably, this approach uses orders of magnitude less energy than conventional computers, thus addressing issues related to power-consumption and heat-dissipation. Within Bio4Comp we (i) will establish the technological and scientific basis for robust upscaling of this approach, (ii) will demonstrate scalability by systematically increasing the problem size by several orders of magnitude, and (iii) will develop new algorithms with the aim to open up a wide range of applications. Additionally, we will (iv) help foster and structure an ecosystem of scientists and companies that will accelerate the path to market acceptance, including the creation of a joint roadmap. Benefits to society will include the ability to solve hitherto intractable problems, and the development of a sustainable and energy-efficient computing approach that is radically different from current information and communications technology.

Title: BIOlogical therapy CYCLEs towards tailored, needs-driven, safer and cost-effective management of Crohn’s disease

URL: http://biocycle-project.eu/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: 'The BIOCYCLE Project proposes to test and critically assess the benefits and risks of an innovative regimen for improving the treatment of Crohn’s disease (CD), a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease affecting the gastro-intestinal tract of an increasing number of patients. Currently, the combination of anti-TNFα monoclonal antibodies and immunosuppressants used without interruption is the gold standard for treating CD. However, long treatments are needed which raise safety concerns and costs. For maintaining the same level of efficacy while reducing risks and costs, the idea of BIOCYCLE is to use a regimen based on 'Treatment Cycles' characterized by alternating periods where both drugs are administrated and periods where only either anti-TNFα or immunosuppressant is used. The central part of the Project will be a large-scale controlled multi-centric clinical study including 300 patients in EU and USA to test the feasibility of shifting from drugs combination used without interruption (control) to Treatment Cycles (experimental arms). Primary and secondary objectives of the clinical study have already been validated for generating the best qualitative and quantitative data on clinical outcomes, predictors of disease evolution and costs. In parallel, the Project will calculate costs-of-illness associated with the different regimens and will perform surveys among patients, caregivers and healthcare systems representatives to assess their readiness to include/support Treatment Cycles in the clinical practice. This will be the basis of a critical appraisal of Treatment Cycles and guidelines for helping caregivers to decide which treatment regimen best fits the specific needs of their patient. If proven, the benefits of Treatment Cycles for treating CD will be discussed with key-opinion leaders involved in the treatment of other immune-mediated inflammatory chronic diseases to support the evolution of disease-driven treatments towards needs-driven treatments.'

Title: Biological feedbacks and ecosystem resilience under global change: a new perspective on dryland desertification

URL: http://biodesert.maestrelab.com/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Changes in climate and land use (e.g., increased grazing pressure), are two main global change components that also act as major desertification drivers. Understanding how drylands will respond to these drivers is crucial because they occupy 41% of the terrestrial surface and are home to over 38% of the world’s human population. Land degradation already affects ~250 million people in the developing world, which rely upon the provision of many ecosystem processes (multifunctionality). This proposal aims to develop a better understanding of the functioning and resilience of drylands (i.e. their ability to respond to and recover from disturbances) to major desertification drivers. Its objectives are to: 1) test how changes in climate and grazing pressure determine spatiotemporal patterns in multifunctionality in global drylands, 2) assess how biotic attributes (e.g., biodiversity, cover) modulate ecosystem resilience to climate change and grazing pressure at various spatial scales, 3) test and develop early warning indicators of desertification, and 4) forecast the onset of desertification and its ecological consequences under different climate and grazing scenarios. I will use various biotic communities/attributes, ecosystem services and spatial scales (from local to global), and will combine approaches from several disciplines. Such comprehensive and highly integrated research endeavor is novel and constitutes a ground breaking advance over current research efforts on desertification. This project will provide a mechanistic understanding on the processes driving multifunctionality under different global change scenarios, as well as key insights to forecast future scenarios for the provisioning of ecosystem services in drylands, and to test and develop early warning indicators of desertification. This is of major importance to attain global sustainability and key Millennium Development Goals, such as the eradication of poverty.

Description: As DNA testing is most commonly centralised in labs, it lacks the turnaround time for time-sensitive applications, and also lacks mobility. The experience in biology required to prepare samples and carry out testing obfuscate the process and limit point-of-care applications. Biomeme seeks to break down these barriers with their versatile Dx System, a holistic solution to bring DNA testing out of the labs and into the physician’s office. Thus, Biomeme provides Molecular Diagnostics for the on-demand economy. By simplifying the process of DNA testing, without sacrificing the detail to be found in raw data, the Biomeme solution brings molecular diagnostic into point-of-care medical services, making it available for homecare and other point-of-need uses.

Title: Bio-inspired photonics for enhanced microalgal photosynthesis in biofuels

URL: http://biomicfuel.com/

Collection: Horizon 2020

Description: Algal biofuels have the potential to provide a sustainable carbon-neutral source to fossil fuels, however the scaling up of algal systems is economically challenging. Here we propose a bio inspired approach to exploiting light-matter interaction by understanding and mimicking the optical properties of corals. We aim to inspire the development of improved photonic materials that can be used to maximise algal growth in order to radically transform the algal biofuel sector. The specific objectives are to 1) explore the in vivo light field, optical properties and photosynthetic efficiency of a range of coral species from different light regimes, 2) understand the nanophotonic and structural properties of corals underlying the optimised light modulation and 3) apply the biophotonic insight to design novel photonic materials for the improved growth of microalgae. The proposal is highly interdisciplinary involving optical and photonic characterisation, photosynthesis research and the fabrication of novel materials. The successful implementation of this project will have a high societal impact, through improving the biofuel sector and working towards carbon-neutral fuel sources.
