Title: Two-dimensional quantum materials and devices for scalable integrated photonic circuits

URL: http://2d-sipc.eu/

Description: The proposed project aims at developing scalable quantum networks, based on photonic chip integration of novel 2D material quantum devices, with the main goal to demonstrate all-optical on-chip quantum processing. The recent demonstration of effortless integration of 2D materials onto photonics and CMOS platforms will result in a breakthrough in the development of on-chip quantum networks. 2D-SIPC will take full advantage of the huge variety of 2D materials and heterostructures and prototype novel quantum devices with revolutionary functionalities. In particular, we will develop electrically driven and entangled single photon emitters, broadband and high temperature single photon detectors, ultra-fast waveguide integrated optical modulators and non-linear gates. To pave the way to scalable networks, 2D-SIPC will develop large scale growth techniques of the most promising 2D materials. With this unique combination of features 2D-SIPC will allow the first demonstration of on-chip optical quantum processing, a key milestone for many quantum network concepts, such as extended secure quantum communication, scaling up of quantum computers and simulators, and novel quantum sensing applications with entangled photons. In particular, as these topics cover all four Quantum Technology pillars of the Quantum Flagship, our proposal makes a strong strategic link to each one of them. Beyond the 2D-SIPC platform, each developed component will be exploited in such distant fields as biological and medical imaging, radio-astronomy and environmental monitoring. The 2D-SIPC consortium includes four academic and one industrial partner with a high degree of complementarity that are at the forefronts of their fields, including single photon detection (ICFO), theory and fabrication of 2D materials and their heterostructures (UNIMAN), single photon emission (UCAM), chip based photonic circuits (CNIT) and commercial single photon detection, single photon emission and packaging (SQ).

Title: 3D SMART MODELS FOR HERITAGE CONSERVATION An Open Science project for documentation, management and representation of Cultural Heritage

URL: http://3d-smohc.fa.ulisboa.pt/

Description: In today’s society, three-dimensional models of the tangible heritage present the greatest potential for heritage conservation efforts, due to advances in display devices, capabilities, and infrastructure costs, etc. However, in reality, these models do not always provide the necessary accuracy; they require an arduous process of managing and transforming; and they are not set up for reuse and long-term archiving. Without such capabilities we are left with inadequate knowledge that leads to higher expenses and time costs during documentation of fieldwork, disconnected bodies of geospatial data, and over-dimensioned and disorganised information. These problems further limit the scope and efficiency of the use of digital heritage resources for professionals, and restrict the accessibility of these resources to a wider audience without technical literacy, therefore constraining conservation and reuse practices throughout society.

Title: Chip-based MUSICAL nanoscopy for imaging endocytosis pathways of phage viruses in liver sinusoidal endothelial cells

URL: http://3dnanoscopy.uit.no/

Description: Research in biology is both empowered and limited by the fluorescence imaging technology, which has witnessed a huge leap in resolution limits through super-resolved optical microscopy or also referred as optical nanoscopy. Over the last few decades, numerous optical nanoscopy techniques have been reported for either spatial or temporal resolution enhancement. Nevertheless, the present state-of-the-art of optical nanoscopy lacks to provide high optical resolution (50 nm or better) at high temporal resolution (~1 Hz) over large field of view (> 500 X 500 μm2) in live-cell friendly imaging conditions, such as without special buffer/fluorophores and with minimum photo-toxicity. In this proposal, the aim is to provide ~50 nm optical resolution at significantly small temporal scales (~ seconds) in photochemical environment which is physiologically conducive for in-vivo bio-imaging applications. This is achieved by incorporating complementary knowledge and intra-disciplinary skills on the computational nanoscopy (of the experienced researcher, ER) and chip-based optical nanoscopy technique (developed by the hosting PI). The aim is to apply Multiple Signal Classification algorithm (MUSICAL), a computational nanoscopy algorithm developed by the experienced researcher with the fluctuating illumination provided by waveguide chip-based optical nanoscopy developed at the host university, namely Universite it Tromsø, under the ERC funded project (Nanoscopy, PI: Ahuliwalia). The technique shall be used to image and understand endocytosis transport-highway of phages virus in liver endothelial scavenger cells.

Title: 5G-CORAL: A 5G Convergent Virtualised Radio Access Network Living at the Edge

URL: http://5g-coral.eu/

Description: The 5G-CORAL project leverages on the pervasiveness of edge and fog computing in the Radio Access Network (RAN) to create a unique opportunity for access convergence. This is envisioned by the means of an integrated and virtualised networking and computing solution where virtualised functions, context-aware services, and user and third-party applications are blended together to offer enhanced connectivity and better quality of experience. The proposed solution contemplates two major building blocks, namely (i) the Edge and Fog computing System (EFS) subsuming all the edge and fog computing substrate offered as a shared hosting environment for virtualised functions, services, and applications; and (ii) the Orchestration and Control System (OCS) responsible for managing and controlling the EFS, including its interworking with other (non-EFS) domains (e.g., transport and core networks, distant clouds, etc.). Through the 5G-CORAL solution, several Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) can be achieved, notably an ultra-low end-to-end latency in the order of milliseconds. Moreover, new business prospects arise with new stakeholders in the value chain, notably small players owning computing and networking assets in the local service area, such as in shopping malls, airports, trains and cars. These environments will be used to validate the system in three complementary end-to-end large-scale testbeds in Taiwan, supporting innovative applications such as augmented reality, car safety, and IoT gateway.

Title: Remote area Access Network for 5th GEneration

URL: http://5g-range.eu/

Description: 5G is considered the next revolution in communication. Several researches focus efforts in tackling challenges for enhancing data rate, reducing latency, improving connectivity and reducing consumption. However there is one relevant mode that has not been strongly supported by the research efforts, which is Internet access for remote areas. As of today, we estimate 1.4 billion of unconnected people live in areas where mobile broadband coverage is not available, showing the immense impact of a network that can deliver high quality Internet access in remote areas. It is clear that a sustainable rural service will not be available unless network deployments and business strategies are specifically tailored to this scenario. Integrating state-of-the-art in mobile communication with business concepts of sharing economy would allow any local entrepreneur to become a profitable mobile rural infrastructure operator with extremely capillary commercialization and operating capabilities. The goal of 5G-RANGE is surpass the limitations of current technologies, making the coverage of low populate areas a feasible business. We aim for a cell radius above 50 km with at least 100 Mbps at the edge, employing both licensed and unlicensed frequencies, while cognitive radio techniques will be used to protect incumbents. Clearly, this new 5G mode needs to be flexible to comply with different applications and services. The current standards cannot use spectral wholes and have limited spectrum mobility. A new waveform needs to be considered and the mechanisms in the MAC and Network layers must take advantage of the features of this waveform in order to provide the desirable dynamic and fragmented spectrum allocation. The combination of an innovative PHY and a cognitive MAC will result in a 5G mode able to reach the unconnected people, not only in Brazil, but worldwide. This network will also trigger new agribusiness services, bringing new revenues for different sectors of our society.

Title: 5G-TRANSFORMER: 5G Mobile Transport Platform for Verticals

URL: http://5g-transformer.eu/

Description: The vision of the 5G-TRANSFORMER project is that Mobile Transport Networks shall transform from today’s rigid interconnection solutions into an SDN/NFV-based 5G Mobile Transport and Computing Platform (MTP) able of simultaneously supporting an extremely diverse range of networking and computing requirements to meet in particular the specific needs of vertical industries. A new networking paradigm known as Network Slicing has emerged for 5G as the most promising approach to address this challenge by enabling per slice management of virtualized resources. 5G-TRANSFORMER aims to bring the “Network Slicing” paradigm into mobile transport networks by provisioning and managing MTP slices tailored to the needs of vertical industries. Specifically: automotive, healthcare and media. The technical approach is twofold: (1) Enable Vertical Industries to meet their service requirements within customised MTP slices; and (2) Aggregate and Federate transport networking and computing fabric, from the edge up to the core and cloud, to create and manage MTP slices throughout a federated virtualized infrastructure. The proposed solution defines three novel building blocks that will be developed and demonstrated integrating the aforementioned three vertical industries:

Title: Design of NanoMOFs Capsules for Drug Delivery and Bioimaging.

URL: http://aam.ceb.cam.ac.uk/

Description: Cancer is a major health problem worldwide, being the most common cause of death after cardiovascular diseases. The major goal of new anticancer therapies is to specifically kill tumour cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. A main challenge to achieve this aim is the development of better drugs, including novel treatments based on the use of siRNAs. These macromolecules are potentially the most powerful anti-cancer drugs that exist, but still there is no efficient way of getting them delivered specifically to the tumour. Indeed, lifetime of such molecules is generally too short and therefore need to be protected in a carrier until they are delivered into tumour target cells.

Title: Ultrasonic Imaging and Drug Propulsion Into Tumors Using Genetically Encoded Gas Nanostructures

URL: http://abarzion.com/

Description: One of the important shortcomings of modern anticancer therapies is their limited penetration depth of only a few cell layers into the tumor. Concentrated around the heterogeneous vasculature, these drugs produce only a local therapeutic effect. In this project we propose a method of overcoming this limitation by engineering a novel class of gas-filled nanostructures capable of homing to tumor tissues, and using their vibration in response to ultrasound energy to deliver drugs deeper into the tumor core. The proposed approach is based on ultrasonic cavitation, a phenomenon in which gas bubbles expand and collapse under the influence of ultrasound waves. This process produces fluid streaming that propels drugs deeper into the tumor mass. The use of ultrasound for drug delivery is attractive due to its availability and affordability. However, the use of this technology is currently limited by the properties of conventional microbubble-based cavitation nuclei: their large size prevents them from penetrating into the tumor and their short circulation times do not match the pharmacokinetic time constants of many drugs. To overcome these challenges, we will utilize gas vesicles (GVs), a unique class of genetically encoded, gas-filled protein nanostructures derived from buoyant photosynthetic microbes, as cavitation nuclei. Unlike microbubbles, GVs are physically stable and their nanoscale dimensions have the potential to enable them to extravasate into tumors and bind to specific cellular targets. We hypothesize that GVs can act as both imaging agents and cavitation nuclei. If so, this therapeutic approach could have vastly improved efficacy and selectivity and the potential to combine cavitation-enhanced drug delivery with emerging advancements in cell based therapeutics. This project will enable the applicant to diversify his capabilities and experience beyond ultrasound imaging and signal processing and re-inforce a position of professional maturity.

Title: Adaptive significance of Non Genetic Inheritance

URL: http://adaptwild.cnrs.fr/

Description: Our ability to predict adaptation and the response of populations to selection is limited. Solving this issue is a fundamental challenge of evolutionary ecology with implications for applied sciences such as conservation, and agronomy. Non genetic inheritance (NGI; e.g., ecological niche transmission) is suspected to play a foremost role in adaptive evolution but such hypothesis remains untested. Using quantitative genetics in wild plant populations, experimental evolution, and epigenetics, we will assess the role of NGI in the adaptive response to selection of plant populations. The ANGI project will follow the subsequent research program: (1) Using long-term survey data, we will measure natural selection in wild populations of Antirrhinum majus within its heterogeneous array of micro-habitats. We will calculate the fitness gain provided by multiple traits and stem elongation to plants growing in bushes where they compete for light. Stem elongation is known to depend on epigenetic variation. (2) Using a statistical approach that we developed, we will estimate the quantitative genetic and non genetic heritability of traits. (3) We will identify phenotypic changes caused by fitness that are based on genetic variation and NGI and assess their respective roles in adaptive evolution. (4) In controlled conditions, we will artificially select for increased stem elongation in clonal lineages, thereby excluding DNA variation. We will quantify the non genetic response to selection and test for a quantitative epigenetic signature of selection. (5) We will build on our results to generate an inclusive theory of genetic and non genetic natural selection. ANGI builds on a confirmed expertise in selection experiments, quantitative genetics and NGI. In addition, the availability of survey data provides a solid foundation for the achievement of this project. Our ambition is to shed light on original mechanisms underlying adaptation that are an alternative to genetic selection.

Title: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) Detect & Prevent - Presymptomatic AD detection and prevention

URL: http://addp.eu

Description: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is central to the rapidly growing and crushing ageing challenge that threatens to economically undermine today’s health care system. AD prevalence will grow to over 100m cases in 2050. AD is incurable, but can be prevented. Detecting pre-symptomatic signs of AD in at-risk groups and intervening early may be the only viable solution. Our target is to bring to market a novel ICT tool, named ‘AD Shield’, that screens for and detects pre-symptomatic stage cognitive decline related to AD, and creates a personalized program for each individual user to strengthen weakened cognitive abilities, thus building cognitive reserve and reducing AD risk. Brain\ will collaborate with world leading neuroscientists to validate this ICT tool. Completion of the tasks described in the workplan will secure the remaining development adaptation combination and validation of the existing technological breakthroughs of the Brain\ method and ICT platform, including the Oxford University’s new highly sensitive cognitive assessment method. The end product will be a scientifically validated, effective, economic, engaging and easily accessible method for pre-symptomatic detection of AD and preventative training. 'AD Shield' can be value created and costs saved of up to €60.000 per patient for the healthcare payers, and at EU level saving can amount to €7bn-108bn direct costs per year and €155bn informal care costs per year. Success stemmed from this phase 2 project will also empower AD at-risk groups and allow them to stay active in the labour market for longer. The combination of costs saved will ultimately boost EU competitiveness.

Title: C9orf72-mediated neurodegeneration: mechanisms and therapeutics

URL: http://adrianisaacslab.com/

Description: An expanded GGGGCC repeat in a non-coding region of the C9orf72 gene is the most common known cause of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The repeat RNA is transcribed and accumulates in neuronal RNA aggregates, implicating RNA toxicity as a key pathogenic mechanism. However, the pathways that lead to neurodegeneration are unknown. My lab has made pioneering contributions to the understanding of C9orf72 FTD/ALS, and reported the first structure of the repeat RNA, and the first description of both sense and antisense RNA aggregates in patient brain. We have now developed new disease models that allow, for the first time, the dissection of RNA toxicity both in vivo and in sophisticated neuronal culture models. We have also used our knowledge of the repeat structure to identify novel small molecules that show very strong binding to the repeats. We will utilise our innovative disease models in a multidisciplinary approach to fully dissect the cellular pathways underlying C9orf72 repeat RNA toxicity in vivo, on a genome-wide scale. Altered RNA metabolism has been implicated in a wide range of neurodegenerative diseases, indicating that our findings will provide profound new insight into fundamental mechanisms of neuronal maintenance and survival. This research programme will also deliver a step change in our understanding of C9orf72 FTD/ALS pathogenesis and provide essential insight for the identification of small molecules with genuine therapeutic potential. RNA-mediated mechanisms are now known to be a common theme in neurodegeneration, suggesting these findings will have broad significance.

AETHON requests to hire a post-doctoral researcher with sufficient academic experience on transportation engineering, data analytics, behavioural analysis and IT programming for the purpose of performing a proof-of-concept research (TRL 5 – development of model/algorithm) on modelling tours incorporating user feedback. The key objective of the MW-R project is to develop a model/algorithm for planning of tours and trips in real time incorporating user preferences and data on traffic obtained from public (and open) sources. The model will be created by using data from public transport authorities in Greece and by performing a small scale survey to obtain user feedback on trips. By achieving the MW-R goal, the model will be able to change the perspective of travellers by providing targeted information about planned routes that will improve mode, route, time of departure and destination choice. AETHON aims to incorporate the model in a smartphone application and to gain knowledge on transportation behavioural analysis that can be used in multiple professional activities.

Title: EU Training Network on Novel Targets and Methods in Atrial Fibrillation

URL: http://afib.ku.dk/

Description: The AFib-TrainNet consortium will enable promising young scientists to become excellent research leaders of the future, capable of fighting the challenges that Atrial Fibrillation (AF) presents to the European population. AF is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, occurring in between 1-2% of the general population. More than 6 million Europeans suffer from this arrhythmia and its prevalence is expected to increase by more than two-fold during the next 40 years due to increased life expectancy. Thus, AF is said to assume epidemic proportions. Current options for pharmacological therapy are limited by both low efficacy and side effects, including life‐threatening ventricular arrhythmias and severe extra-cardiac toxicities.

Title: Linking biodiversity, ecosystem functions and services in the Great Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem (GSME) - drivers of change, causalities and sustainable management strategies

URL: http://africanbioservices.eu/

Description: The direct dependence of humans on ecosystem services is by far strongest in developing regions where poverty restricts access to resources. This dependency also makes people in developing countries more sensitive to climate change than their developed counterparts. Increasing human populations deteriorates natural habitat, biodiversity and ecosystems services which spiral into poverty and low human welfare. This calls for innovative solutions that encompass the entire socio-ecological-economic system, as recognized on a global scale in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. However, innovative and practical solutions require downscaling to regional levels for identifying concrete sets of drivers of change. For Africa specifically, the interplay of human population growth, land use change, climate change and human well-being is a major challenge. This project focuses on the Serengeti-Maasai Mara Ecosystem and associated agricultural areas, a region in East Africa that encompasses parts of Kenya and Tanzania. The ecosystem is world-famous for key aspects of its biodiversity, such as the migration of 1.3 million wildebeest. This ‘flagship ecosystem’ role will enhance the international interest in the project. In this project, internationally leading researchers from Norway, the Netherlands, Scotland, Denmark and Germany are teaming up with strong local partners in Tanzania and Kenya. The research will be organised in seven interlinked work packages: 1) assemble and integrate the so far separate Kenyan and Tanzanian relevant data on the region; 2) quantify the connections between human population growth, land use change, climate change and biodiversity change; 3) test how biodiversity change leads to changes in key ecosystem services; 4) quantify the dependence of human livelihoods on these ecosystem services. We will implement innovative ways for communication and dissemination of the results of ‘continuous engagement’ by local stakeholders.

Description: AFTERLIFE proposes a flexible, cost- and resource-efficient process framed in the zero-waste and circular economy approach for the recovery and valorisation of the relevant fractions from wastewater. The first step of such process is an initial step consisting of a cascade of membrane filtration units for the separation of the totally of solids in wastewater. Then, the concentrates recovered in each unit will be treated to obtain high-pure extracts and metabolites or, alternatively, to be converted into value-added biopolymers (polyhydroxyalkanoates). Moreover, the outflow of the process is an ultra-pure water stream that can be directly reused.

Title: The First Cell Culture Platform that Enables Affordable Cell Therapies at a Large Scale

URL: http://aglaris.co.uk/

Description: Cell therapy has shown promising results for treating and curing a large range of diseases, from cancer to diabetes. The principles of cell therapy are easy to describe: cells (possibly modified) are injected into patients. Cell therapy is now a reality in Europe: in August 2018 the first two treatments for patients with blood cancer were approved; more of them are about to successfully conclude the approval path. What hinders the large-scale uptake of cell therapy is its costs: culturing enough cells of high quality requires specialised personnel and infrastructure, which only a few centres can afford. The market asks for a scalable cell culture platform that can produce large quantities of high quality cells at much lower costs than done nowadays. To address this need, we have developed the Facer – the first fully-autonomous cell culture platform. The Facer can manufacture billions of high-quality cells starting from the small quantity (about 500,000 cells) of a tissue biopsy without the need of human intervention, thanks to a unique patented iterative process. Our product is at TRL 7; its performances, in terms of quality and costs, are superior to any competitor commercially available. We have developed the Facer over the course of 5 years thanks to cash investments of over €3 million. In the Phase 2 project we will finalise the product, perform a validation with external partners, gain the CE marking (our product is not a medical device), and find a distributor and a launching customer. We will initially tackle the European market to then expand globally once that the local regulatory barriers are overcome. In 2024, after 5 years from the first sale, our turnover will surpass the €60 million and our EBITDA will be over €36 million. Our innovation can enable affordable cell therapies at a large scale and change the life of millions of patients who suffer from diseases that have been deemed 'incurable' so far.

The incidence and prevalence of IBD is highest in Europe and North America (incidence up to 24 per 100,000 person-years). IBD is not well-understood on a molecular level, and is challenging to diagnose correctly. As the disease is chronic, patients typically require life-long treatment, often with very expensive biological drugs, which are not always effective. Thus, there is a need to increase our understanding the disease, and develop better diagnostic methods so that the correct medication can be applied.

Description: This is a project in commutative algebra of positive characteristic, which has also many connections with algebraic geometry. The main goal of this project is to study the relations between some classes of rings that arise in prime characteristic, F-singularities, and three specific notions. These are the symmetric signature, a new invariant defined by the Experienced Researcher in his Ph.D. thesis; the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function, a recent generalization of the classical Hilbert-Kunz function studied intensively in prime characteristic algebra; and the FFRT property, a positive characteristic version of the notion of finite representation type, important in representation theory. As a guideline for the future research, eight concrete problems are stated and will be investigated by the Experienced Researcher with the help of the Supervisor. The strategy to complete this task include the acquisition of new knowledge, which will be obtained, among other things, also through the organization of weekly seminars with the collaboration of the host institution. The arguments of this project, F-singularities in particular, are important topics in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry which are developing and growing fast in these years, especially in the USA and in Japan. As a further way to promote the development of these topics also in Europe, the Experienced Researcher and the Supervisor plan to organize a small workshop which will take place in the host institution at the end of the fellowship.

Title: Rhythms In Social Interaction

URL: http://alexandraliviageorgescu.weebly.com/social-rhythm--social-timing.html/

Description: Social interactions are ubiquitous and our globalized society challenges us with increasingly complex social environments. Yet, evolution has equipped humans with a unique capacity to navigate our social worlds, namely the capacity for rhythmic interpersonal coordination. Despite its relevance, social neuroscience studies have largely ignored this phenomenon, due to methodological constraints inherent in the nature of social interaction. In light of new technological advancements, however, the overarching aims of the proposed project are: (1) to implement an interdisciplinary psychological and neuroscientific approach and a novel experimental methodology that combines Virtual Reality (VR) and functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), in order to (2) understand how social interaction is both expressed in and shaped by rhythmic interpersonal coordination on both a behavioural and a neural level, and to (3) determine whether individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developed individuals differ in their capacity to rhythmically coordinate their motor actions. Thus, the proposed interdisciplinary project combines social psychology research with technical virtual reality innovations and envisages behavioural (synchroneous tapping paradigm), neuroimaging (fNIRS) and clinical (ASD) implementations. It will result in a high-quality scientific programme with long-term potential, by laying the groundwork for the adoption of the concept of “Social Interaction Rhythms” in social neuroscience.

ERIA now conducts a collaborative multidisciplinary research programme at the interface of biomedical and bio-mechanistic approaches, which will be an excellent environment to train the next generation of European scientists. The 15 recruited fellows will be incorporated into international academic study groups (all partners of the ERIA network) to perform high calibre research and also will be exposed to environments from other sectors to broaden their experience. Secondments will include technical training within individual laboratories and SMEs (TissueGnostics, Galkem, Cambridge Life Sciences, Sofigen and Varionostics) as well as large Pharma (Roche). Training through research will be complemented with a balanced programme of transferable skills and access to local courses. The training of each fellow will be guided by a personal career development plan and supervised by a PhD committee panel. The primary goal of the network is to train the recruited fellows by participation in an internationally competitive research programme and integrating them into an international network. Description: Prediction has traditionally been viewed as a hallmark of successful science by scientists and philosophers alike. In recent years however, interest in prediction has declined, as philosophers have shifted their focus to explicating scientific explanation, while scientists have settled on a standard notion of the term. Unfortunately, this displacement is premature, as it obscures conceptual issues that are becoming increasingly important in scientific practice. Perhaps the most important of these issues is why some sciences (e.g. economics, ecology and climate science) face disproportionate difficulties in making predictions that are sufficiently precise and accurate. This issue has important implications within and outside academia, as it affects our expectations and evaluations of scientific practice.

Title: Exploring LIfestyle Transitions: a molecular and physical anthropology approach of ancient Yakut people

URL: http://amis.cnrs.fr/

Description: Adaptation, whereby organisms become fitted to their environment, is a key evolutionary process driving biodiversity. Our understanding of how natural selection impacts genetic diversity has greatly advanced with recent developments in high-throughput DNA sequencing and genome-wide selection scans. However, microbiomes and epigenomes are other systems selection can act upon as they influence our health and phenotype, and thus our fitness. Although microbiomes, epigenomes and genomes can now be reconstructed, no study has evaluated their relative importance in populations exposed to new selective pressures. This is what ELITE aims at achieving by reconstructing the history of the biological changes undergone by the Yakut people of Far Eastern Siberia after their contact with Russians in the 17th century, and the resulting profound lifestyle transition, diet shifts and massive epidemiological outbreaks. By applying a multidisciplinary approach combining the latest advances in physical anthropology, ancient genomics, metagenomics and epigenomics to a unique collection of cultural and biological material from ancient Yakuts, ELITE proposes an innovative experimental approach in evolutionary biology, which could eventually reveal a possible maladaptation to our modern lifestyle, making us more susceptible to diseases. The success of ELITE will be based on the excellent synergy between the experienced researcher and the host institution, as the applicant will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities and expertise to gain advanced training in physical anthropology methods, while applying her genomic skills to a sample set available at no other research institution in the world. Title: Evolution of Regulatory Landscapes in Chordates

URL: http://amphiencode.github.io/Data/

Description: Evolution of animal forms largely depends on changes in developmental gene expression patterns. These genes are controlled by a large number of cis-regulatory elements (CREs) distributed in extended genomic regions organized in 3D chromatin structures known as regulatory landscapes (RLs). However, it is currently unknown how these RLs originate and evolve and how changes in RL architecture and associated CREs have impacted the evolution of gene expression and animal body plans. The aim of this proposal is to understand the evolution and origin of vertebrate regulatory genomic architecture. For that, I will generate an extensive epigenetic and topological profiling of the European amphioxus genome, a slow-evolving basal invertebrate chordate. I will study RLs 3D chromatin architecture, enhancers, promoters, open chromatin and nucleosome positioning through amphioxus embryogenesis using 4C-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq and RNA-seq and compare these datasets with equivalent results from vertebrates. This will allow me to identify the core RLs organizations that we and other vertebrates share and that underlie the novel and conserved features that characterize our body plan. These results will make ground breaking advances in our understanding of how the regulatory architecture of our genome was assembled during evolution, providing new insights on how RLs organization has impacted gene expression and, ultimately, evolution of animal morphology. By the execution of EVOREL innovative techniques and multi-disciplinary approaches to unveil the deep roots of the human regulatory architecture, I will start a promising research program that will secure my future career as an independent group leader.

Title: RNA-protein Nanostructures for Synthetic Biology

URL: http://andersen-lab.dk/

Description: Synthetic biology aims at re-engineering organisms for practical applications by designing novel biomolecular components, networks, and pathways. The field is expected to lead to cheaper drugs, sustainable fuel production, efficient diagnosis and targeted therapies for diseases. However, a major obstacle to achieve these goals is our limited ability to rationally design biomolecular structure and function. By contrast, the field of DNA nanotechnology has so far demonstrated an unprecedented ability to design and self-assemble well-defined molecular shapes, although the production method of thermal annealing is not compatible with cells. We have recently demonstrated a breakthrough method, called RNA origami, which allows the design of RNA molecules that fold into well-defined nanoscale shapes during their synthesis by an RNA polymerase. In this proposal I aim at extending this technology to produce RNA-protein nanostructures and at demonstrating their application in synthetic biology. My primary scientific hypothesis is that understanding the folding process during synthesis will help us to design nanostructures that can be produced in cells. I will design a general RNA-protein architecture that is compatible with folding during synthesis. I will investigate folding kinetics to be able to design and program the dynamical folding process. Based on this, RNA-protein nanostructures will be designed, expressed in cells, and verified, for the formation of the desired shapes. We will develop new functionalities by both rational design and selection approaches with the aim of obtaining multivalent-binding and switching properties. Finally, the functional RNA-protein nanostructures will be applied in proof-of-concept experiments to demonstrate efficient, multivalent targeting of subcellular structures, biosensing of a variety of intracellular analytes, metabolic channeling of biosynthesis pathways, and complex control of transcriptional networks.

Title: Food for thought: monitoring the effects of drugs and diet on neuronal glutamate release using nanoelectrodes

URL: http://andrewewinggroup.se

Description: Glutamate is the primary activating neurotransmitter in the brain. It modulates synaptic plasticity of neurons, which underlies memory formation. However, it also plays a fundamental role in pathological processes, such as those related to Alzheimer’s disease. This essential role and future development of therapeutic agents urge the development of a highly-sensitive analytical method for determining glutamate levels at a cellular level. In this project I will create a miniaturized, in vitro system that will allow this. To develop it, my expertise in microfluidics and pharmacy will be supplemented by the host’s extensive experience with cell analysis and nanoelectrodes.

Title: The Cambodian Archaeological Lidar Initiative: Exploring Resilience in the Engineered Landscapes of Early SE Asia

URL: http://angkorlidar.org/

Description: For over half a millennium, the great medieval capital of Angkor lay at the heart of a vast empire stretching across much of mainland SE Asia. Recent research has revealed that the famous monuments of Angkor were merely the epicentre of an immense settlement complex, with highly elaborate engineering works designed to manage water and mitigate the uncertainty of monsoon rains. Compelling evidence is now emerging that other temple complexes of the medieval Khmer Empire may also have formed the urban cores of dispersed, low-density settlements with similar systems of hydraulic engineering.

Title: Mass-production, landscape transformation and the birth of science in the land of Thales (8th-6th centuries BCE)

URL: http://anja.slawisch.net/

Description: THALES will embed archaeological data from two excavation projects on the Milesian peninsula, Turkey, into wider discourses on economic production, landscape change and philosophical reflection in the Greek world between the 8th and 6th centuries BC. The archaeological finds from the Temple of Didyma and the nearby necropolis of Panormos (harbour of Didyma) provide vital information about the economy and ritual traditions of this lynchpin region of the Greek and Mediterranean world during a pre-modern era of 'globalisation'. The project will stimulate a transformation in the study of the early classical world with the application of state-of-the-art spatial theories to the landscape around these sites and an innovative combination of quantitative analysis to finds from both excavations, set against the context of contemporary scientific endeavours indexed by the earliest European philosophers writing in Ionia (most famous being Thales of Miletos). The high quality, multidisciplinary research results will contribute significantly to our knowledge of this formative phase of European cultural and intellectual foundations, provide cross-fertilization between disciplines and develop the Experienced Researcher’s long-term vision of modernising classical scholarship.

Title: Geography of Demography: modelling plant population responses to global habitat patterns

URL: http://annamariacsergo.weebly.com/marie-curie-project.html/

Description: Mankind is profoundly altering the environments in which plant and animal populations live. An era of such massive habitat rearrangements requires ecologists to take new approaches to increase our understanding of species distribution and likelihood of persistence worldwide. Improved ecological models of range-wide persistence and response to the simultaneous threats of climate change, habitat destruction and landscape reconfiguration are required to inform management of biodiversity at large scales. GEODEM brings together global datasets of plant distribution and demography to gain insight into how the geographic configuration of habitats affects growth, survival and reproduction of more than 500 plant species worldwide. The project has two main objectives: 1. Geographic Range Pattern Analysis: Using species distribution models and global spatial statistics tools to quantify and compare spatial patterns of suitable environmental conditions across species’ biogeographic ranges. 2. Landscape Demography: Testing how the spatial arrangement of suitable habitat within the geographic space can inform population responses to environmental gradients. The fellow will be supervised by and collaborate with world leaders in spatial ecology in Ireland and other European countries to accomplish her goals. The prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship will enable her to develop expertise in currently disparate areas of species distribution modelling and demography and place her in a unique position to make significant contributions to the urgent problem of population persistence at large scales during this era of global change. It will enable the fellow to build an independent research program in Europe after gaining research experience in top universities in Canada and Australia.

Title: String topology and group (co)homology

URL: http://anssilahtinen.sites.ku.dk/

Description: 'The goal of the project is to use string topology to understand the homology and cohomology of certain highly interesting groups: automorphism groups of free groups and finite groups of Lie type. The project consists of two parts. In the first, the Experienced Researcher (ER) aims to use string topological techniques he has pioneered and proven effective elsewhere to prove the nontriviality of the Morita and Eisenstein cycles in the homology of automorphism groups of free groups, thereby solving one of the big open questions concerning the homology of these groups. In the second part, the ER and the main supervisor will develop the 'string topology of finite groups of Lie type' they have recently discovered connecting the cohomology of the free loop space of the classifying space of a compact connected Lie group G and the cohomology of the finite groups of Lie type associated with G with the aim of using it to shed light on the hitherto mysterious Tezuka conjecture asserting that the two cohomologies frequently agree.

Title: ANtibioticS and mobile resistance elements in WastEwater Reuse applications: risks and innovative solutions

URL: http://answer-itn.eu/

Description: In response to the increasing problem of water shortage, the reuse of treated urban wastewater is considered the most suitable and reliable alternative for sustainable water management and agricultural development. In spite of the benefits associated with this practice, major concerns currently exist, related to the adverse effects regarding chemical and biological contaminants of emerging concern such as antibiotics and mobile antibiotic resistance elements such as antibiotic resistant bacteria and resistance genes. These are now considered as a serious public health problem by various international organizations and the European Commission, because of their spread in the environment, the food chain, drinking water, etc. To tackle these problems, scientists with an interdisciplinary research/training background are urgently needed. This ETN will train a new generation of ESRs to address the risks associated with such contaminants and wastewater reuse. Innovative chemical, microbiological, toxicological and modelling tools, and novel process engineering will form the scientific and training core of their innovative research projects and training. The project will contribute to understanding the fate and transmission of antibiotics and resistance from wastewater to the environment and humans, through soil, ground/surface water and crops. Relevant ELVs will be determined, essential for the development and implementation of regulatory frameworks. This project directly tackles these aspects, by bringing together a multidisciplinary research team, with the private sector, and policy makers and through communication activities towards stakeholders and the wider public.

Title: Who Should Have a Say? Preferences for Unequal Representation

URL: http://anthonykevins.github.io/

Description: Equal representation is at the core of representative democracy, but are citizens actually in favour of it? There are good reasons to think that citizens may take a variety of stances toward unequal representation (i.e. differential group influence over policy) particularly when it comes to groups that elicit strong emotional reactions (e.g. racialised minorities). Citizens may think that policy-affected groups deserve extra input (due to affectedness), less input (due to bias), or the same amount of input as everyone else. However, it is impossible to say anything meaningful about these attitudes since we know almost nothing about them. This lack of knowledge is a serious shortcoming with real-world implications: these preferences shape politics and, by extension, the functioning of representative democracies. My proposed study is thus relevant not only for recent debates in political science over both the extent and origins of unequal representation, but also for contemporary politics – with its surging populist claims that certain groups have excessive influence over policy.

Title: The Power of Silence: A Medical Anthropological Approach to AIDS Care Narratives

URL: http://anthropologyofsilence.com/

Description: Despite the widespread availability of antiretroviral medication, the global AIDS epidemic has not been halted yet and stigmatization of people living with HIV and AIDS continues in most parts of the world. While the social scientific analysis of narratives of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) has proven crucial in understanding challenges in AIDS care worldwide, the silences that structure such narratives remain under-theorized. Current studies signal that silences may be defenses and active strategies rather than passive responses to stigma, but critical questions remain on how to study, conceptualize and interpret what is unspeakable and unspoken, and sometimes even unthinkable.

Title: Characterization of the Human Gallbladder Microbiome

URL: http://apc.ucc.ie/profile-dr-crystal-johnson/

Description: The human gastrointestinal tract harbors a complex community of microorganisms that confer metabolic, immunological and neurological benefits to the host. This assemblage is known as the Gut Microbiome and has received increased attention over the last decade. Scientists have begun to uncover the importance of these bacterial inhabitants and expand investigations to consider how site-specific microbiomes affect host physiology. While more than one million cholecystectomies (gallbladder removal surgeries) are performed throughout Europe each year, the bacterial communities associated with the human gallbladder and its disease states remain unknown. Studies are lacking that characterize the effects of cholecystectomies on the gut microbiome. Without the ability to regulate bile entering the duodenum during food intake, it is expected that gallbladder removal will lead to downstream changes in the intestinal population. Here, the microbial composition of human bile, gallbladder mucosa, and biopsies of surgically removed healthy gallbladders (adherent and non-adherent microbiota) will be investigated using 16S rRNA metagenomics. The profiles will be compared to samples of a second cohort undergoing emergency cholecystectomies, in order to identify possible biomarkers for gallbladder disease. Once the gallbladder microbiome has been elucidated, the impact of its removal on the gut microbiome will be assessed. Using molecular and cultivation based techniques, on stool samples (collected during the recovery period) and analyzed for community composition, metabolomics, bile, fat and energy content. GallBiome will form the basis for establishing relationships between gallbladder microbiota, gut microbiota, and human health with a view to informing future development of diagnostics and therapeutics. Ultimately, characterization of the core gallbladder microbiome has important biological and medical implications with potential to lower the risk and incidence of cholelithiasis.

Title: Breakthrough technology for managing and purchasing translation services guaranteBreakthrough technology for managing and purchasing translation services guaranteeing transparency, savings and quality

URL: http://aqrate.biz/

Description: Aqrate is the SaaS changing the way companies handle and purchase translation services. It is a web platform designed to support companies and organisations who translate high volumes of documentation. Translations might seem like a simple process to handle, but for companies around Europe who require thousands of words translated per week, the reality is much more complex and costly. There are thousands of companies spending over €50,000 per year and many spend over €100,000. The main issue for translation buyers today is that cost estimates are provided by language service providers (LSPs) themselves, and buyers are given little transparency on the process. This creates a clear conflict of interest because companies producing large volumes of text for translation tend to entrust their content to one LSP with no visibility or feedback on word counts and translation quality. Purchasing translation services on the market is therefore like putting fuel in your car without knowing how much fuel is in the tank or how much you are adding. Aqrate provides companies with a meter to overcome this market asymmetry and level the playing field. Our approach is completely unique in the industry and was created to give companies control of their translations and allows them to use multiple vendors. Our software separates content analysis from translation to reduce costs and improve the quality of the entire process. Our market tests show that we can deliver companies 30% savings on their yearly translation costs. We have a clear value proposition that resonates in the market, and we believe that within three years of market launch we will be generating €6 million per year. We will use Phase 1 to conduct valuable market validation and targeting studies while also completing our due diligence process around remaining software development areas. Our estimated total funding required: to reach TRL 9 is €2.2 M which we plan to fund via private financing and a Phase 2 project.
