We are a dynamic and diverse community committed to the study and teaching of British, American and anglophone literature and film, Creative Writing, and Writing Studies. Our tradition of first-rate, cutting-edge research, together with the exceptional productivity of our faculty, has meant that we are consistently ranked among the top twenty English departments in the nation. In keeping with this tradition, the department hosts five major scholarly journals—American Literary History, Configurations, The Eighteenth Century: Theory and Interpretation, JEGP: Journal of English and Germanic Philology, and Research in the Teaching of English—as well as the prize-winning magazine Ninth Letter, which has become a centerpiece of our MFA program. Much of the work we do is interdisciplinary and intercultural in nature, and so we have strong ties as well to other interdisciplinary units on campus such as American Indian Studies, Asian-American Studies, Cinema Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Latina/o Studies, Medieval Studies, and the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory.

Title: American Indian Studies Program, College of LAS

URL: https://ais.illinois.edu/

Description: American Indian Studies is committed to the highest standards of professional and scholarly conduct and the best ideals of academic freedom. We are also committed to developing strong and sustaining partnerships with people and programs in American Indian and Indigenous communities. These commitments will sometimes create tensions and might at times be in conflict, but we see them both as necessary to our conception of the work we do. Free academic inquiry helps us to test the limits of accepted wisdom, seek out new approaches to chronic problems, and recognize that being creative about the future might lead us to embrace people and ideas that have been in various ways excluded from the American Indian social and political world. At the same time, our commitment to partnering with people and programs in Native communities creates a need for us to make our work intelligible to a constitutive audience of that work. While we retain responsibility for defining the boundaries and limits of our scholarly and creative work, we also actively seek opportunities to be transparent in articulating what we do and why.

URL: https://beespotter.org/

Description: BeeSpotter (http://beespotter.mste.uiuc.edu/) is a web-based partnership between citizen-scientists and the professional science community designed to educate people about pollinators by engaging them in an effort to obtain baseline information on the population status of honey bees and bumble bees. Beespotters register and then log in to upload photos they’ve taken; they can try to identify their specimens with the user-friendly color-based keys on the website or leave it for the content master, graduate student Terry Harrison, to identify. Species identity, date and locality are then entered into the database, where they can be cross-referenced by species, location, or collector; moreover, over 7000 historical records of bees from the INHS collection have been entered and can be accessed and cross-checked with contemporary sightings to determine whether ranges have shifted with time.

Title: University of Illinois Pollinatarium, College of LAS

URL: https://pollinatarium.illinois.edu/

Description: The University of Illinois Pollinatarium is the first free-standing science center in the nation devoted to flowering plants and their pollinators. Why do plants and pollinators merit such special attention? The ecological interaction between pollinators and plants is vitally important because most terrestrial life on Earth depends in one way or another on pollination for survival. Over 75% of all flowering plant species depend on animal pollinators in order to reproduce, so pollination is a key process that sustains all kinds of communities around the world. And among Earth’s inhabitants depending on pollinators for their existence are humans; about one-third of the diet consumed by people around the world—the part with most of the vitamins and minerals--is the result of the pollinator-plant interaction. Pollination is therefore economically important as well. In the U.S. alone, pollinator efforts contribute close to $20 billion to the economy and worldwide pollinator activities are worth over $200 billion. Because so much depends on pollination, the UI Pollinatarium is dedicated to increasing awareness and appreciation of pollination as a remarkable ecological partnership and an essential ecosystem service.
