Description: Better tools are needed to manage regional dynamics, not just as economic systems or static inventories of resources, but as complex systems that are part of regional and global networks. However, effective management requires both that we understand the systems to be administered and that we understand the implications of our strategies. We have attempted here to outline an approach for understanding the dynamics of urban systems and the potential implications of urban policy and investment management decisions. We described one modeling approach — LEAM — that utilizes cellular automata and other technological advances in spatial simulation modeling to help improve a community’s ability to make ecologically and economically sound decisions. LEAM was intended to enable users to capture stochastic influences and view the reported probable consequences of intended events in a scenario-based format that is com-prehensible by local experts, decision-makers, and stakeholders.

The inaugural volume featured papers of many of the world’s leading figures in the key areas of mathematics at the time: William Feller, Paul Levy, and Paul Malliavin in probability theory; Richard Bellman, R. P. Boas, Jack Hale, and Edwin Hewitt in analysis; Marvin Marcus, Olga Taussky, and Oscar Zariski in algebra; and Paul Erdös, L. J. Mordell, and John Tate in number theory. S. Chern, H. Kesten, and K. Uhlenbeck have served as Editors of the IJM. As a non-profit journal published by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the IJM aims to keep its costs low while maintaining the highest production and editorial standards, and to pass the savings on to subscribing institutions. At a subscription price of around 17 cents per page, the IJM ranks among the least expensive journals in mathematics.

Zariski, and quickly established itself as a preeminent journal of mathematics. Since then, the IJM has published many influential papers, most notably the proof of the Four Color conjecture by K. Appel and W. Haken. Distinguished researchers such as J. Bourgain, A. Calderon, S. S.

Title: Program in Modern Greek Studies, College of LAS

URL: http://www.moderngreek.illinois.edu/

Description: The program in Modern Greek Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was established in 2008 to foster the study of the Greek language, Greek history and culture, and to explore past and current perspectives on Hellenism. In creating this new program, our University is joining a growing trend among leading institutions of higher learning in North America, offering programs in Modern Greek Studies dedicated to the study of the language, literature, culture, and history of modern Greece. We are also continuing an educational tradition started by the Greek-American community in Chicago, one of the largest in the US and historically the first to take an active interest in Greek-speaking education, whose geographical proximity to our campus is an important asset in our efforts.

Title: Department of English

URL: http://www.ncte.org/journals/

Description: Welcome to the website of the English Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We are a dynamic and diverse community committed to the study and teaching of British, American and anglophone literature and film, Creative Writing, and Writing Studies. Our tradition of first-rate, cutting-edge research, together with the exceptional productivity of our faculty, has meant that we are consistently ranked among the top twenty English departments in the nation. In keeping with this tradition, the department hosts five major scholarly journals—American Literary History, Configurations, The Eighteenth Century: Theory and Interpretation, JEGP: Journal of English and Germanic Philology, and Research in the Teaching of English—as well as the prize-winning magazine Ninth Letter, which has become a centerpiece of our MFA program. Much of the work we do is interdisciplinary and intercultural in nature, and so we have strong ties as well to other interdisciplinary units on campus such as American Indian Studies, Asian-American Studies, Cinema Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, Latina/o Studies, Medieval Studies, and the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory.
