Description: Business never quite stopped at Katrina Tessier’s kid-friendly play café, Scout Coffee, even as COVID-19 public health orders limited her café to takeout and delivery only, and left Tessier working seven days a week as the shop’s only employee. Now, as Manitoba begins easing back public health restrictions and slowly re-opening the economy this week, she recommends businesses make slow changes, stay patient and find creative ways to meet customer needs.

Description: Opening doors is the easy part. That’s just a matter of hard work and decree. Now is the time to get a haircut, play a few rounds of golf and have that elective surgery. Now is the time to take the kids to the museum, to pitch a tent at a public campground, to sip wine on the cafe patio down the street. Well, you can do those things now, at least. You may not want to, but the option is there once more. It will be different, of course.

Collection: Manitoba COVID-19 Outbreak
Description: Faith communities are usually safe sanctuaries when the world seems bleak. A heartening side effect of belonging to a faith is that all have rituals and traditions for supporting members through the big events of life, both good and bad: births and deaths, marriages and divorces, coming of age and moving to the nursing home. But these rituals and traditions are at odds with physical distancing. With all the fear and suffering resulting from COVID-18, it’s a time when we most need our faith families, but we’ve been forced to disperse.

Description: The eeriest part of the pandemic has been in the way every time you leave the house, you discover something that’s changed in big or subtle ways. One day, you stroll into the grocery store; the next, you stand in a line that snakes around outside, waiting to be handed a sanitized cart. As I cruise around the city, the little changes grab my attention.

Description: The insult to the injury suffered by restaurants forced to close during the pandemic was delivered by a company named Foodora. A Berlin-based online ordering and delivery app, Foodora announced last week that it was ceasing operations in Canada. That wasn't surprising; Foodora has been a colossal failure in most of the countries in which it has operated. What was a bit alarming was that the company chose to declare bankruptcy when it closed, owing restaurants across Canada nearly $5 million.

Description: Warm spring weather and sunny skies have convinced a new generation of people — suddenly with more time on their hands and nowhere to spend it except at home — to take up an activity as old as humanity: putting seeds in soil and waiting for them to grow into food.

Description: Maybe you’ve seen them on social media. Maybe you’ve even seen them in your own neighbourhood. So-called "driveway parties," with people arranging lawn chairs, two metres apart. Or meeting in parking lots and socializing from their cars. It’s a physical-distancing loophole that might be tempting, especially as the weather begins to warm up, but Dr. Marcia Anderson, a medical officer of health for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, is pretty frank on the subject. "We would not recommend the driveway, lawn chair, car-parking gatherings."

Description: As we hunker down at home to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, some of us may find ourselves in a room we’ve rarely occupied before: the kitchen. In many ways, the pandemic has changed our relationship with food. We can’t eat in restaurants. We aren’t spending Sunday dinners with the folks. Quick dashes to the grocery store have been replaced by once-a-week (or less frequent) excursions to stock up. Some of us are watching our expenses more closely than ever as a result of loss of income. Despite the challenges, there are easy ways to adapt to our temporary new reality.

Description: Pedestrians and cyclists along Wellington Crescent near Lanark Street were greeted by a peculiar sight in a homeowner’s front yard: a two-metre-tall, topiary camel sporting a bright yellow surgical mask, surrounded by pots containing close to 4,000 flowers, every last one of which was free for the taking as per a sign that read, "Help yourself to some spring."

Description: Although it is fair to assume that more people today are reading the news than at this time last year, the newspaper industry is fast becoming a casualty of the coronavirus. As advertising dollars have dramatically decreased, thousands of newspaper staff have been laid off and many papers have either ceased publication entirely or move exclusively online. This has especially been the case for smaller community and faith-based newspapers like the Toronto-based Canadian Jewish News and Winnipeg’s Jewish Post and News.
