Description: Faith communities are usually safe sanctuaries when the world seems bleak. A heartening side effect of belonging to a faith is that all have rituals and traditions for supporting members through the big events of life, both good and bad: births and deaths, marriages and divorces, coming of age and moving to the nursing home. But these rituals and traditions are at odds with physical distancing. With all the fear and suffering resulting from COVID-18, it’s a time when we most need our faith families, but we’ve been forced to disperse.

Description: As we hunker down at home to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, some of us may find ourselves in a room we’ve rarely occupied before: the kitchen. In many ways, the pandemic has changed our relationship with food. We can’t eat in restaurants. We aren’t spending Sunday dinners with the folks. Quick dashes to the grocery store have been replaced by once-a-week (or less frequent) excursions to stock up. Some of us are watching our expenses more closely than ever as a result of loss of income. Despite the challenges, there are easy ways to adapt to our temporary new reality.

As I cruise around the city, the little changes grab my attention.

As the crisis lingers on, however... "I’ve said to date that there hasn’t been layoffs, but that’s something… that you should expect to hear something sooner (rather) than later on," Bowman said.

Description: Maybe you’ve seen them on social media. Maybe you’ve even seen them in your own neighbourhood. So-called "driveway parties," with people arranging lawn chairs, two metres apart. Or meeting in parking lots and socializing from their cars. It’s a physical-distancing loophole that might be tempting, especially as the weather begins to warm up, but Dr. Marcia Anderson, a medical officer of health for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, is pretty frank on the subject. "We would not recommend the driveway, lawn chair, car-parking gatherings."

Description: The insult to the injury suffered by restaurants forced to close during the pandemic was delivered by a company named Foodora. A Berlin-based online ordering and delivery app, Foodora announced last week that it was ceasing operations in Canada. That wasn't surprising; Foodora has been a colossal failure in most of the countries in which it has operated. What was a bit alarming was that the company chose to declare bankruptcy when it closed, owing restaurants across Canada nearly $5 million.

Description: Pedestrians and cyclists along Wellington Crescent near Lanark Street were greeted by a peculiar sight in a homeowner’s front yard: a two-metre-tall, topiary camel sporting a bright yellow surgical mask, surrounded by pots containing close to 4,000 flowers, every last one of which was free for the taking as per a sign that read, "Help yourself to some spring."
