Description: In 2014, American University Association of Black Journalists launched as a student chapter of NABJ. We are dedicated to creating a community of minority media professionals on campus through networking opportunities and organizing events featuring communicators of color. One of those events, which we started two years ago, was “Voices: A Conversation on Minorities in Media,” featuring local D.C. journalists who gave students crucial insight on the pros and cons of being a minority in today’s journalism environment. In 2016, Seniors Elisha Brown and Taryn Daniels created an extension of AUABJ titled 'The Blackprint'. The Blackprint is an online publication that doubles as a safe space for people of color at American University. Its primary goal is to not only inform people of what’s going on in their communities, but keep them up to date with the latest cultural happenings, fashion trends, and highlights of their community leaders' work through 'AU Excellence' features. We invite all minds and majors on this endless journey to stay honest, stay brilliant and stay woke.

Description: The Public Purpose is an organization comprised of graduate students in American University’s School of Public Affairs (SPA) that aims to provide insightful perspectives on public policy issues and topics. We strive to produce relevant, thoughtful, and accessible insight on public policy issues through two published mediums: The Public Purpose Journal, a peer-reviewed academic journal, and The Public Purpose website, which features articles written by SPA graduate students on timely public policy subjects. We aim to make public policy analysis and research accessible to anyone that might be interested. We want to boil down complex policy issues to their fundamental levels, to demonstrate to our readers why they should be interested in the first place. As students in public administration, public policy, law, government, and justice and criminology, we analyze complex policy issues and translate them for our readers in both print and online form.

Description: Welcome to this digital exhibition, a culmination of a year of research on early modern England, the Hardwick Portrait (c. 1590-99) of Queen Elizabeth I and its owner Bess of Hardwick, and the politically advantageous symbolism of the animals and flowers depicted in the work. The project helped to satisfy the requirements of a Master of Arts degree in Art History at American University in Washington, D.C., which was awarded to me in May of 2019. Section one of the exhibition closely anlyzes the Hardwick Portrait and related works to reveal strategies by which the image aggrandized Elizabeth to the advantage of Bess of Hardwick. Section two analyzes selected representations of Elizabeth through the lens of gender, to reveal how the portraits helped to shape and strengthen the queen's political authority: the Hardwick Portrait is one such work. Section three investigates the animals and flowers that bedeck Elizabeth's gown in the portrait to reveal their emblematic function in shaping the image of the Queen as an ideal ruler. Reading the sections of the exhibition in order, by clicking "next" at the bottom of each screen, is recommended. The site can also be navigated by clicking the menu symbol at the upper right. A bar with section titles will appear on the left; click the texts for access. Clicking on the thumbnails throughout the site will call up larger images in most cases. "The project helped to satisfy the requirements of a Master of Arts degree in Art History at American University in Washington, D.C." Advisor: Dr. Andrea Pearson ; Second reader: Dr. Joanne Allen. Department: Art ; Program: Art History ; Major: Renaissance/Baroque. Tori Gingrich's capstone project for American University.

Description: American University's undergraduate research journal Clocks and Clouds is an American University undergraduate research journal that publishes articles on the cutting edge of political science, international relations, and public policy. Through the journal, our authors contribute to the intellectual dialogue both within the American University community and in broader academia. Philosopher Karl Popper’s “clocks and clouds” metaphor describes the two ends of the spectrum of predictability in social science: Clouds represent the disorderly and irregular, and clocks represent the predictable and rational. By providing a venue for top undergraduate research, Clocks and Clouds aims to find the clocks amidst the clouds.
