Description: Center for Teaching Excellence's faculty newsletter. Areté, the title of CTE’s faculty newsletter, captures CTE’s essence in a word. This Greek term is often equated, seamlessly, with the English words 'virtue', 'excellence', 'goodness' and 'knowledge.' It embodies a belief that "the highest human potential is knowledge and all other human abilities are derived from this central capacity." In CTE, we believe that empowering students to achieve their highest human potential, through teaching, knowledge creation, and creative professional practice is the calling of every university faculty member. It is the goal – and privilege – of each Center for Teaching Excellence professional to support this calling at American University.

Description: Since its founding in 1893, American University has benefited greatly from the devotion, service, intellectual contributions, ethical behavior, and philanthropy of many thousands of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends. In a very real sense, they also are "trustees" of the institutions by virtue of their dedication, affection, and generosity that help to ensure that the University will faithfully serve this and future generations. Those of us who have been chosen to serve as fiduciary trustees for a period of time—to safeguard the University's assets and to foster its capacity to serve others—enthusiastically and without reservation accept the following additional responsibilities as evidence of the commitment of each trustee.

Description: American University's undergraduate research journal Clocks and Clouds is an American University undergraduate research journal that publishes articles on the cutting edge of political science, international relations, and public policy. Through the journal, our authors contribute to the intellectual dialogue both within the American University community and in broader academia. Philosopher Karl Popper’s “clocks and clouds” metaphor describes the two ends of the spectrum of predictability in social science: Clouds represent the disorderly and irregular, and clocks represent the predictable and rational. By providing a venue for top undergraduate research, Clocks and Clouds aims to find the clocks amidst the clouds.

Description: Community Action and Social Justice Coalition ( CASJ ) is seeking to build a vibrant, interconnected, active community of organizations and individuals diverse in background and mission. The lack of power analysis and non-transparency of issues beyond surface-level at American University perpetuates complacency, maintaining the power of the establishment, allowing the cycle of privilege and oppression to continue. CASJ recognizes that radical organizing is the only practical method of building power in our quest towards uncompromising social justice. Through strengthening our coalition members, we establish a foundation of activism that allows us to discuss and act on issues in ways institutionalized social justice organizations cannot. We acknowledge the diversity of backgrounds that can provide inspiration for radical organizing and we believe that activism is the only method through which we can enact our ethical and/or spiritual commitment to social justice.
