Description: Community Action and Social Justice Coalition ( CASJ ) is seeking to build a vibrant, interconnected, active community of organizations and individuals diverse in background and mission. The lack of power analysis and non-transparency of issues beyond surface-level at American University perpetuates complacency, maintaining the power of the establishment, allowing the cycle of privilege and oppression to continue. CASJ recognizes that radical organizing is the only practical method of building power in our quest towards uncompromising social justice. Through strengthening our coalition members, we establish a foundation of activism that allows us to discuss and act on issues in ways institutionalized social justice organizations cannot. We acknowledge the diversity of backgrounds that can provide inspiration for radical organizing and we believe that activism is the only method through which we can enact our ethical and/or spiritual commitment to social justice.

Description: The Public Purpose is an organization comprised of graduate students in American University’s School of Public Affairs (SPA) that aims to provide insightful perspectives on public policy issues and topics. We strive to produce relevant, thoughtful, and accessible insight on public policy issues through two published mediums: The Public Purpose Journal, a peer-reviewed academic journal, and The Public Purpose website, which features articles written by SPA graduate students on timely public policy subjects. We aim to make public policy analysis and research accessible to anyone that might be interested. We want to boil down complex policy issues to their fundamental levels, to demonstrate to our readers why they should be interested in the first place. As students in public administration, public policy, law, government, and justice and criminology, we analyze complex policy issues and translate them for our readers in both print and online form.

Description: In 2014, American University Association of Black Journalists launched as a student chapter of NABJ. We are dedicated to creating a community of minority media professionals on campus through networking opportunities and organizing events featuring communicators of color. One of those events, which we started two years ago, was “Voices: A Conversation on Minorities in Media,” featuring local D.C. journalists who gave students crucial insight on the pros and cons of being a minority in today’s journalism environment. In 2016, Seniors Elisha Brown and Taryn Daniels created an extension of AUABJ titled 'The Blackprint'. The Blackprint is an online publication that doubles as a safe space for people of color at American University. Its primary goal is to not only inform people of what’s going on in their communities, but keep them up to date with the latest cultural happenings, fashion trends, and highlights of their community leaders' work through 'AU Excellence' features. We invite all minds and majors on this endless journey to stay honest, stay brilliant and stay woke.
