Title: Home : Data, Systems and Society research network

URL: https://data-research.unimelb.edu.au/

Collection: Units, Networks & Other 4

Description: WELCOME TO DSSRN The Data, Systems and Society Research Network (DSSRN) is a collaborative research network focused on building a community of research scholars, and data infrastructure, to support internal collaborations and external partnerships, as well as sharing knowledge, tools and resources in the broad area of data, systems, and society. The Network provides leadership across the University of Melbourne to facilitate the development of research initiatives, support collaborative research, and assist in forming research clusters in conjunction with suitable partners by planning and delivering targeted research events. Problem Statement With the increasing sophistication and ubiquity of data garnering technologies, the quantity, resolution, and scope of data that we can collect is growing at an incredible rate. This has led to the popularisation of the notion of "big data" analytics. Beyond the celebratory rhetoric which sees governments, industry and the academy invest in building enhanced data capacity, the true potential of having more data is highly dependent on format and context, behind which are hidden many domain-specific subtleties, constraints, risks and blind-spots. Many fields that have typically been seen as "data-poor" are now becoming "data-rich", and face the prospect of being able to explore many new questions. With greater quantities, and new types of data available, there are new opportunities to borrow from methods and tools that have been developed in traditionally data-rich disciplines. However cross-disciplinary knowledge transfer is critical to building meaningful and appropriate capacities around data. Methods cannot be borrowed from other domains and applied indiscriminately to any dataset; just because something can be computed does not mean that the result has meaning. Locked away in many disciplines is a wealth of knowledge, much of it implicit, which must be understood in order to conduct valid research. Big data doesn’t always translate to better or more objective results. Accordingly, we need to move beyond the celebratory moment of "big data" and deal with issues of definitional ambiguity, methodological constraints, ethics, governance, sustainability and other domain-specific complexities that do not preclude fruitful cross-disciplinary collaborations, but which require nuanced understanding and consideration from all sides. Our Mission We need to bring experts from difference disciplines and domains together to identify and understand these issues, so that we can identify real opportunities for cross-disciplinary research. Our mission is to help these people to find each other, to critically evaluate the applicability of available tools, methods, and datasets, and to help them foster new and exciting collaborations to address (and define) the real problems of working with unprecedented data.

Title: Scientific Inquiry Skills : The University of Melbourne

URL: http://scientificinquiry.meu.unimelb.edu.au/

Collection: Units, Networks & Other 4

Description: One of the challenges facing higher education in Australia is identifying the best way towards developing skilled bioscience graduates for a competitive workforce. International commentators claim that widespread adoption of teaching innovation during the early years of bioscience degrees will have a major impact1-4. However, the extent to which bioscience educators in Australia explicitly teach scientific inquiry skills to their students, and the pedagogies they use to achieve this is presently unknown. The project sought to clarify this situation and has: Consulted 42 educators across eleven bioscience disciplines and from a broad range of Australian universities Identified cases where educators considered they were intentionally teaching scientific inquiry Investigated the role of educational technologies in supporting the development of scientific inquiry skills Identified strategies used by educators to evaluate learning Determined educators’ perceptions of the nature of scientific inquiry, and compared them to reported views of contemporary scientists The key findings of the project have been published in a handbook Teaching scientific inquiry skills: A handbook for bioscience educators in Australian universities. The handbook provides: A snapshot of current practice to teach scientific inquiry Descriptions of 26 cases where scientific inquiry skills are explicitly taught Detailed learning designs of six cases of innovative practice Resources to assist educators to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching practice.

Title: Australia India Strategic Research Fund

URL: http://aisrf.eng.unimelb.edu.au/

Collection: Units, Networks & Other 4

Description: Australia India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF) funded by both Australian and Indian Governments is dedicated to promote bilateral research between Australian and Indian researchers to participate in leading edge scientific research projects and workshops. This workshop funded by AISRF focusses on improving disaster management practices in Indian and Australia. The magnitude and impacts of disasters caused by both natural and unnatural disasters have been huge for governments and societies especially in the last three decades. Statistics show that the Australia’s financial losses after a major disaster is similar to that of India, whilst India’s societal losses have been higher. Both India and Australia aim towards a disaster resilient society based on a whole-of-nation approach underpinned by the application of emerging technologies. In this context, spatial information has been embraced by governments at certain levels with limited success. However the application of spatially enabled technologies should not be just limited individual applications. An integrative platform that can span across all levels of government, societies and organisations with both control and input across a range of data would be an ideal platform for enhanced planning, preparation, response and recovery. This workshop will analyse current practice and outline best practice measures for both governments. A review of national technological capacity will be undertaken based on the state-of-the-art research in natural and unnatural disasters. Participants from Australia and India include internationally acclaimed academics and practitioners. Public participation is allowed for selected sessions. This workshop commences on the 21st Jan 2013 and concludes on the 24th Jan 2013 and is held in the Industrial Consulting and Sponsored Research (IC & SR) Building in the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), Sardar Patel Road, Chennai due to the collaborative efforts of University of Madras and IITM, Chennai. Furthermore the workshop is represented by delegates from the Department of Science and Technology, National Institute of Karnataka, National Maritime Foundation, Government of Tamilnadu, Government of Gujarat, Anna University, Coordinates Magazine and SEEDS India. Australian representations include academics from The University of Melbourne, The Swinburne University of Technology, Victoria University, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and Victoria State Police in Melbourne. A short field visit to the coastal hamlets in and around Nemmeli on the East Coast Road is planned to witness the role of higher education in re-building disaster prone coastal communities http://uccnemmeli.unom.ac.in and also to plan for multi-institutional collaborative field demonstration projects in this location.

Title: Scientists for Sustainability

URL: http://www.sfs.unimelb.edu.au/

Collection: Units, Networks & Other 4

Description: Scientists for Sustainability is a three-year project managed by the School of Botany at the University of Melbourne which commenced in February 1998. Dr Peter Attiwill, Reader in Botany at the University of Melbourne, is the project’s principal investigator and Ms Jane Fewings is the project coordinator. The project receives funding from the Commonwealth, State and Territory hrough the Ministerial Council on Forestry, Fisheries and Aquaculture (MCFFA) Standing Committee on Forestry, and from the National Association of Forest Industries and the Forest & Wood Products Research & Development Corporation. The project is intended to fill a gap in education and communication of the science of ecological sustainability. The aims of the project are to promote a better understanding of the independent science that supports sustainable utilisation of Australia’s native forests and to stimulate, and facilitate the participation of independent scientists in debate on sustainable management in the community and amongst stakeholders (politicians, industry, conservation groups). The project has three main objectives: to develop networks between scientists working on the sustainability of forests in Australia and overseas, to develop scientific resource material from scientists who understand and have contributed to sustainable management of Australia’s native forests, to encourage scientists who have worked in the field of sustainability to contribute to public debate on sustainable management of Australia’s native hardwood forests.

Title: PLMR - Polarimetric L-band Multibeam Radiometer

URL: http://www.plmr.unimelb.edu.au/

Collection: Units, Networks & Other 4

Description: A new national facility, for airborne remote sensing of key environmental variables is currently being developed through the support of the Australian Research Council, University of Melbourne, University of Newcastle, James Cook University and Airborne Research Australia at Flinders University. The new instruments enable high-resolution mapping of near-surface soil moisture, land surface salinity and temperature, and ocean surface salinity and temperature, providing unprecedented detail on characteristics critical to our understanding and management of the environment. The small instrument size and weight enables use of a light aircraft as the observing platform, providing the national (and international) research community with an affordable tool, hitherto unavailable. The facility includes: o A dual polarisation L-band (1.4GHz) passive microwave radiometer, and o A thermal imager. These instruments enable the measurement of top 5cm soil moisture content and salinity under low to moderate vegetation conditions and/or ocean salinity at 50m resolution, and surface temperature at 1m resolution (approx 300m swath width at 150m flying height) using a low-cost light aircraft as the platform. The dual polarisation microwave measurements enable simultaneous solution of soil and vegetation moisture content while soil temperature is estimated from the thermal data. The high resolution thermal data will allow the development of soil moisture downscaling algorithms from spatially averaged data at a ground resolution that can be adequately monitored using ground-based techniques. Over water, the microwave measurements are a function of ocean salinity and temperature. In this case, the high resolution thermal data will allow simultaneous mapping of ocean salinity and sea surface temperature on the same platform, and the dual polarisation data will allow more accurate extraction of ocean salinity. The thermal data may also be used to estimate evapotranspiration directly. The platform on which these instruments are flown is a Small Environmental Research Aircraft (SERA), a Diamond Dimona MPX. There are also a range of other instruments available to be carried by the aircraft, allowing measurement of vegetation indices, meteorological parameters, evapotranspiration, ground surface elevation and vegetation height. The capability to measure such a comprehensive range of remotely sensed parameters from a single low-cost airborne platform is unique worldwide. Moreover, the high resolution dual polarisation microwave data afforded by this airborne instrument is unprecedented. The thermal imager is presently being tested and the PLMR is due for delivery in November 2004 with test flights presently scheduled for early 2005. We expect the facility to be available for general use from mid 2005.

Description: The Repertory Grid Technique was a procedure devised by George Kelly to operationalize his theory of the Psychology of Personal Constructs. His theory stated in essence that the choices people made in their lives were based on the way they construed their lives. The events in their lives were the elements of a repertory grid, and the ways in which they construed were the constructs of a grid. The technique has been generalized to work in the widest range of contexts including clinical, educational, and organizational contexts (see Fransella, Bell, & Bannister, 2004 [Publications] for examples). This laboratory is focussed on ways of analysing the data of a Repertory Grid. While specific programs have been devised for this [see Computer Programs & Links ], many ways of analysing grid data can be carried out using standard packages such as SPSS.
