Description:
This collection comprises web sites about athletics at Abbot Academy and Phillips Academy created by students in the senior elective course, Sport and Society, taught by History faculty Elizabeth Monroe in winter 2023. This course explored and examined how sport at all levels both reflects and resists societal structures and pressures. It explored the intersection of sport with race, gender, class, and national identity and examined the role of politics, economics, and media in shaping sport. The class considered the experiences of both those who play sport and those who consume it. While the focus of the course was on the role of sport in the United States from the late 19th century to the present, the class spent some time considering the impact of sport globally as well.
