Description: This page contains background information, a digital copy of a poster, film footage, and discussions about the April 9, 2010 staging of the 1999 play 'Spinning Into Butter' sponsored by student group Women of Color. The play was written by Rebecca Gilman, a student at Middlebury in the early 80s, and is based on events that transpired at Middlebury College in the fall of 1983. The source material centers around a controversial incident at the College when John Grace, a black College freshman wrote himself racist notes and broke his own window. John Grace confessed and withdrew from the College, but the stir around the events left many shaken and brought up wider issues of race and racism on campus.

We believe that now is the time for Middlebury to take a stand as an environmental leader; the college has an unprecedented opportunity to lead the rapidly growing national divestment movement and effect change beyond our campus."

Description: "This collection gathers some creative responses students at Middlebury College had to the recent presidential election. All pieces submitted were included with the exception of a few academic papers and outright polemics. Though we hoped and asked for pieces representing the whole range of reactions, from joy to despair, it will surprise no one that the scales tilted heavily towards the latter. While not all points of view are represented here, the attempt was to present not arguments but individual responses—which are bewildered, thoughtful, judicious, angry, hopeless, hopeful, even funny. All are heartfelt."

Description: The Engaged Listening Project focuses on the conditions under which we (as teachers, scholars, students, and citizens) listen to one another. Real listening is demanding, and not always possible. It requires that we look beyond our own interests, considering the voices and perspectives of others in order to explore other ways of thinking and knowing. An understanding of the values and priorities of others – one outcome of listening – is important for ethnographic research, political mobilization, volunteering, and running a lab. Listening is necessary for our educational project and a useful tool in the toolbox of civic skills.

Description: From the website: "Fifty Years of Green is a timeline-based digital exhibit documenting the environmental studies curriculum at Middlebury College. The students of HIST 222 created this exhibit in Spring 2015 as part of the commemoration of the 1965 creation of the ES Major at Middlebury. Nine teams of historians created timeline-based exhibits covering the period roughly from 1961 to 2010. Although each team took its own approach, all sought to document Middlebury's changing curriculum, environmental debates and activities on the college's campus, and some broader events in national and global environmental history."

Description: Front Porch Forum's mission is to help neighbors connect and build community. We do that by hosting regional networks of online neighborhood forums. My wife, Valerie, and I founded Front Porch Forum in 2006 to serve our hometown of Burlington, Vermont, and by 2013 FPF had grown to host forums in every community in our state. Amazingly, a majority of Vermont households subscribe to FPF now. Members have shared millions of postings among nearby neighbors about all sorts of topics: lost dogs, car break-ins, plumber recommendations, school budgets, block parties, helping neighbors in need, and more.

Description: Black hair is multifaceted. It is resistance, a revolutionary crown. It’s beautiful. It’s not just hair. Our roots are rooted in an ever changing culture of blackness. Every strand is an ode to self-love. From February 3rd--March 15th, be sure to visit Davis Library’s atrium and the 3rd floor exhibit to see what black hair means to our diasporic MiddKids. We plan on touching on the history, politics, diversity of textures, care routines, styles and personal significance of black hair.

Description: A letter from the Campus' editorial board in response the 'List Of Men To Avoid' published by Elizabeth Dunn on their personal Facebook account in December of 2017. The editors emphasize the urgency of holding perpetrators accountable for sexual violence, and defend Dunn's choice to let survivors submit their stories anonymously. They also comment on Middlebury's official Title IX sexual harassment policies, questioning whether these procedures are adequate to the needs of every student. Lastly, the editors call for students to hold themselves to a higher standard in personal interactions and public discussions, manifesting a commitment to align the reality of social life on campus with the conceptual abhorrence of rape culture.
