Spearheaded and co-chaired by John Canepa, Dick DeVos and David Frey, Grand Action was a not-for-profit organization in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Comprised of more than 250 individuals from throughout the community, the organization was active from 1993 to 2017. Its primary objectives were “to identify downtown building and revitalization projects, to galvanize public opinion and support for these projects, and to design and implement funding strategies for each project, including securing enough private sector support to guarantee funding from existing public funds.” Major projects supported by Grand Action include Van Andel Arena, DeVos Place, Meijer Majestic Theatre, MSU Medical School and the Downtown Market.

ArtPrize is an open, independently organized international art competition which takes place for 19 days every other fall in Grand Rapids, Michigan. ArtPrize began in 2009 and, at the time, awarded the largest art prize in the world, $250,000. The competition is open to anyone, and prize money is awarded through public voting and juried awards.
