Description: The Brodsky laboratory investigates the biochemistry, cell biology and physiological functions of clathrin proteins that form a coat at membranes and around vesicles during intracellular membrane traffic. Current studies address several novel roles for clathrins in lymphocyte function, glucose metabolism and oncogenesis. Cellular and molecular engineering of clathrin self-assembly have potential therapeutic value for several disease states and the laboratory focuses on these applications as well as the molecular basis for clathrin function. We are also interested in genetic diversity and evolutionary origins of the clathrin proteins in the wider context of evolutionary cell biology.
