Description: The founding meeting of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation took place on January 4, 1917 at King Edward High School at Oak Street and 12th Avenue in Vancouver. At the time, it was the city’s only secondary school. Mr. J. G. Lister was elected the first BCTF president, and the objectives adopted at that meeting continue to guide the Federation to this day: • To foster and promote the cause of education. • To raise the status of the teaching profession in BC. • To promote the welfare of the teachers of BC. The BCTF decided to build this online museum to mark 100 years of advocacy towards these key objectives, and to celebrate the tremendous commitment and creativity of hundreds of thousands of public school teachers over the decades.
