Shade shade@usc.edu /div div class="main_copy" The Great Plague: The Story of London’s Most Deadly Plague br by A. Lloyd Moote and br i Dorothy C. Moote br /i Johns Hopkins University Press, $29.95 br /p p It is a bitterly cold winter in London when, outside the city walls, a woman dies of the plague. In a year’s time, 100,000 of those who did not flee London are dead. A. Lloyd Moote, emeritus professor of history in USC College, and his microbiologist co-author provide an account of the Great Plague of 1865. Through letters and diaries, the authors detail how communities endured, how medical, religious and government bodies reacted and how well the social order held together. The authors also examine the economic and moral dilemmas people faced and the spiritual resources that sustained those who remained. br br /p hr p Ancient Rhetoric and Oratory br by Thomas Habinek br i Blackwell Publishers, $54.95 br /i /p p Rhetoric was central to the political and cultural life of the Greek and Roman worlds. Thomas Habinek, professor of classics in USC College, introduces readers to the ancient rhetorical tradition by investigating key questions about the origins, nature and importance of rhetoric: Is it inevitably an elitist pursuit? What benefits did it offer devotees? What would society be like without rhetoric? Habinek also explores the role of the orator, especially the two greatest figures of the tradition, Demosthenes and Cicero. br /p hr p br Género, educación y política en América Latina br by Nelly Stromquist br i Editorial Santillana, price varies br /i /p p The volume by Nelly Stromquist, professor in the USC Rossier School of Education, is her first in the Spanish language. The 13 chapters bring together several issues: women’s literacy, the institutionalization of gender in government machinery, the influence of neoliberalism on educational policies and the impact of structural adjustment on women’s education. Stromquist argues that current educational reform in the region is guided by such concepts as accountability, decentralization, quality and equality of opportunity – yet these terms are defined in ways that ignore the gendered nature of formal educational systems. br /p hr p br In a Queer Time & Place: Transgender Bodies, Subcultural Lives br by Judith Halberstam br i New York University Press, $60, $19 br /i /p p This first full-length study of transgender representations in art, fiction, film, video and music offers a jumping-off point for future analysis of transgenderism and a new way to understand cultural constructions of time and place. Judith Halberstam, professor of English in USC College, examines the significance of the transgender body in a collection of essays on queer time and space. Case studies focus on the meanings of masculinity in its dominant and alternative forms – especially female and trans-masculinities as they exist within subcultures. /p /div br clear="all" / /div /div !--/content-main-- div id="content-sub" class="stretch" div id="search" form method="get" action="http://uscnews.usc.edu/mt/mt-search.cgi" input type="hidden" name="IncludeBlogs" value="71" / input type="hidden" name="limit" value="20" / label for="searchbox" class="searchlabel" Search /label input type="text" id="searchbox" name="search" value="SEARCH USC NEWS"/ button type="submit" searchutton p class="searcharchives" a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/search/" Search prior to August 2008 /a /p /form /div !--/search-- ul li id="latest-stories" h3 Latest stories /h3 ul li a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/science_technology/sour_research_sweet_results.html" Sour Research, Sweet Results /a em class="date" November 24, 2010 12:28 PM /em /li li a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/university/all_the_ingredients_for_a_cool_career.html" All the Ingredients for a Cool Career /a em class="date" November 24, 2010 7:52 AM /em /li li a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/health/new_fotonovela_deals_with_dementia.html" New Fotonovela Deals With Dementia /a em class="date" November 23, 2010 8:26 AM /em /li /ul /li li id="forjournalists" h3 a href="http://www.usc.edu/uscnews/newsroom/" For Journalists » /a /h3 /li li id="news-usc" h3 a href="http://www.usc.edu/uscnews/usc_in_the_news/inthenews.php?id=2102" USC in the News br / for 11/24/2010 » /a /h3 ul li p a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/jacketcopy/2010/11/2011-nea-literature-grants-announced.html" Los Angeles Times /a reported that Cecilia Woloch of the USC College will receive a 2011 literature fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. “Carpathia,” Woloch’s fifth collection of poetry, was published in 2009, and her work has appeared in “Best American Poetry” and anthologies, the story noted. /p p a href="http://news.oneindia.in/2010/11/22/comingsoon-airplanes-that-look-likebirds.html" Asian News International /a featured research by Geoffrey Spedding of the USC Viterbi School and a Northwestern University colleague. The two developed an airplane design with birdlike wings and a tail that can reduce drag and therefore improve efficiency. “[W]e can show that there exists an alternative design that is aerodynamically superior,” Spedding said. “One may argue that there is now an imperative to further explore this (and perhaps other) designs that could make a significant difference to our global energy consumption patterns.” /p p a href="http://truthdive.com/2010/11/23/Better-treatment-for-spinal-injuries-could-be-on-its-way.html" Asian News International /a featured research by Samantha Butler of the USC College, USC Research Laboratory Specialist Keith Phan and USC graduate students Virginia Hazen and Michele Frendo, which found that the rate and direction of axon growth in the spinal cord can be controlled. The discovery may have future applications in regenerating the neuronal circuits of patients suffering from spinal cord injuries or neurodegenerative diseases, the story stated. /p p a href="http://www.kpbs.org/news/2010/nov/22/californians-want-spending-cuts-not-really/" NPR /a San Diego affiliate KPBS-FM’s “These Days” featured results from the USC College/Los Angeles Times poll, which found that while California voters know that the state is facing a budget deficit, a minority of voters favored cutting programs to reach a balanced budget. /p p a href="http://www.scpr.org/programs/patt-morrison/2010/11/23/starstruck-the-business-of-celebrity/" KPCC-FM /a ’s “Patt Morrison” interviewed Elizabeth Currid-Halkett of the USC School of Policy, Planning, and Development about her new book, “Starstruck: The Business of Celebrity.” The book examines celebrity, tracing its impact on economics, geography and networking. /p /li /ul p class="itn_more" a href="http://www.usc.edu/uscnews/usc_in_the_news/" USC in the News archive /a /p /li !--/news-usc-- li id="news-other" h3 Campus News /h3 dl dt a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/capital_connections/" Capital Connections /a /dt dd USC faculty, staff and alumni in Washington, D.C., and Sacramento /dd dt a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/inprint/" In Print /a /dt dd New and recent books written or edited by USC faculty and staff /dd dt a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/family_matters/" Family Matters /a /dt dd Achievements and awards /dd dt a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/obituaries/" Obituaries /a /dt /dl /li /ul /div !--/content-sub-- /div !--/content-- !-- iphone nav -- !--/iphone nav -- div id="site-info" ul li class="quicklinks" h3 Quick Links /h3 ul li a href="http://politicsandsociety.usc.edu/" Politics and Society /a /li li a href="http://www.usc.edu/uscnews/experts/" Experts Directory /a /li li a href="http://www.usc.edu/calendar" Arts and Events Calendar /a /li li a href="http://www.usc.edu/about/factbook/" Facts About USC /a /li li a href="http://www.usc.edu/about/administration/" Administration /a /li li a href="http://www.usc.edu/about/history/" History of USC /a /li /ul /li li class="contactinfo" h3 Contact /h3 ul li class="newsinfo" a href="mailto:newsinfo@usc.edu" newsinfo@usc.edu /a /li li class="mediarep" a href="http://www.usc.edu/uscnews/media_reps/" rel="external" Media representatives /a /li /ul /li li class="feeds" h3 a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/feeds/" RSS feeds /a /h3 ul id="menu-rss" li a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/feeds/main.xml" All articles /a /li li a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/feeds/arts.xml" Arts /a /li li a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/feeds/business.xml" Business /a /li li a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/feeds/digital_media.xml" Digital/Media /a /li li a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/feeds/global.xml" Global /a /li li a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/feeds/health.xml" Health /a /li li a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/feeds/politics_society.xml" Politics/Society /a /li li a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/feeds/science_technology.xml" Science/Technology /a /li li a href="http://uscnews.usc.edu/feeds/university.xml" University /a /li /ul ul li a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(file_format)" rel="external" What is an RSS feed? /a /li li a href="http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10088_7-5143460-1.html" rel="external" How do I read an RSS feed? /a /li /ul /li /ul div class="clear" /div !--/clear-- /div !--/site-info-- script type="text/javascript" var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ?
