New York City Places and Spaces

Collected by: Columbia University Libraries

Archived since: Jan, 2010

Description:

A growing collection of websites selected by the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library staff for web archiving preservation by the Columbia University Libraries' Web Resources Collection Program. Website captures began in 2010 and are ongoing; in 2020, to reflect the collection's evolving subject focus, the collection title was changed to 'New York City Places and Spaces' (from the original 'Avery Library Historic Preservation and Urban Planning'). The collection's principal thematic focus is documenting the evolution of the built environment and public spaces in and around New York City through the interaction of historic preservation efforts and new development projects within urban planning debates. Selected websites are mostly published by non-profit groups or individuals based in the New York City area, including historic preservation groups, neighborhood associations, community development groups, public policy organizations, parks and open space conservancies, and both sponsors and critics of ongoing development projects.

URL: https://stopsunnysideyards.com/

Description: "We are a grassroots, non-partisan neighborhood group in Western Queens that's fighting for a better quality of life, against displacement, for the protection of small businesses, and for better infrastructure in our communities ... We oppose Sunnyside Yards, not because we are against all development, but because the policies being pushed by the Mayor, city council, and the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) would greatly harm Western Queens and, indeed, the entire city."

Title: Making of Manhattanville

URL: http://www.manhattanville.net/

Description: "This site is meant to function as a comprehensive archival record of the Manhattanville area -- as it existed at its earliest stages of development and urbanization in the mid- to late-nineteenth century, through its rapid industralization through the early 1900s, and its slow decline toward the second half of the century. By 2030, Manhattanville will undergo one last, presumably final reincarnation into another Columbia campus. This project is an attempt to capture the neighborhood as it appears now, teetering on the cusp of that next great change."
