Description: "Defenders of the Historic Upper East Side is a preservation advocacy group founded in 2003 and dedicated to preserving and protecting the Upper East Side historic character. The great array of architectural styles, from 19th century brownstone rowhouses to distinguished early 20th century apartment buildings make our neighborhood some of the most expensive and desirable real estate in the world and a magnet for intense development pressure. Misguided, well-funded development projects, seeking to enrich the few at the expense of the larger community, will always assault us."

Description: "Considered one of the finest surviving examples of architecture from the period, the Merchant’s House has been recognized as a National Historic Landmark (one of only 2,400) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In New York City, it has been awarded landmark status not only for its 1832 late-Federal brick exterior but also for its Greek revival interior rooms. Of note, the House was among the first 20 buildings designated in 1965 under the City’s new landmarks law. It is the only historic house museum in the Greenwich Village/Soho/NoHo neighborhoods and celebrated 80 years as a museum in 2016."

These elements contribute to a sense of place and certain expectations about our quality of life, and proportions of residential and commercial use. Protecting these attributes along with our social, and architectural history is the goal of the Morningside Heights Historic District Committee. To achieve this end we are seeking a historic designation by the Landmarks Preservation Commission."
