Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "Access to safe education, and protecting our most vulnerable, should be a top govt priority. I am disappointed by the updated guidelines for preventing COVID-19 transmission in BC schools. 1/ #bcpoli / In year 3 of returning to school in a pandemic, we know better than to rely on vaccines and staying home when sick. As @a_longhurst reported, “BC’s sole reliance on vaccines is not working to prevent constant waves of (re)infection, hospitalizations and Long COVID”. 2/ #bcpoli / We know that masking, standardized ventilation and filtration, testing & vaccines contribute to better protection for all. 3/ #bcpoli / The @bcndp says they've spent $166 million upgrading ventilation in schools, but they haven’t shared which have had upgrades and which haven’t. More people in BC have died from COVID-19 in 2022 than ever before. We must recognize our reality and adapt to it. 4/4 #bcpoli"

The only missing ingredient is courage from our leaders to be transparent about the current situation and mandate the changes that are necessary to prevent more illness and death." @SKGandhiMD #bcpoli 6/6" because they are sick. Children's wards and ERs are overwhelmed and operations for children and infants are being cancelled. #bcpoli 1/ / We need public health guidance on how to reduce transmission of the viruses that are circulating in BC. Instead, the @bcndp has quietly removed isolation requirements for people with COVID-19, reduced testing & reporting, and has given inadequate guidance on masking. 2/ / The independent review of BC's pandemic response released on Friday highlights that the @bcndp ’s repeated failure to communicate public health guidance left BCers distrustful and uncooperative with public health measures. 3/ / Where are the organized efforts of the @bcndp to keep people healthy? Vaccines are one tool, but given the conditions we are seeing right now, more needs to be done to prevent illness, especially in children. #bcpoli #healthcare 4/ / Ventilation, testing & publicly reporting data, wearing masks in high-risk public settings like classrooms, on transit, and in grocery stores - these can help reduce the risk of transmission but have received little investment by the @bcndp . 5/ /

Description: Justin McElroy on Twitter: "There are a number of signs that B.C. has entered into a 3rd Omicron wave, the length and severity of which is yet to be determined. Let's take a look at what we know at the moment. / #COVID19 measurements have risen in four of Metro Vancouver's five wastewater treatment plants the last two weeks. Prior to this, only one had been going up, the rest falling or stable. Thus far it has not been a huge spike up, but we've been down this road before. / In addition, hospitalizations had been dropping for the last six weeks. But that trend stopped last week — which by itself might not be a huge worry, but combined with global tends and local wastewater measurements, should give pause. / Lagging effects being what they are, we've seen in the last couple weeks a big fall in immediate deaths attributed to COVID. Hard to do comparisons because of the government changing measurements, but 2nd Omicron wave was similar to the 1st Omicron wave in terms of deaths. / Many places are seeing similar waves at the moment, driven by BA.4 or BA.5 variants. It's showing signs of being more transmissible and dangerous than BA.2, which fuelled B.C.'s second Omicron wave in March/April. So what is the B.C. government doing? / At this point, B.C. isn't providing data on the newest Omicron variants. One can see the growing "Other" section of variants in the chart and probably put two and two together, but it's another way in which B.C.'s lack of data makes it hard to paint a full picture. / At this point, B.C. has provided the lowest number of 4th doses of any Canadian province releasing data. Given the high numbers of British Columbians who received 1st/2nd/3rd doses, this is likely a result of government strategy to restrict access relative to the rest of Canada / Forecasting what comes next is difficult for a few reasons: - Few countries have seen a BA 4/5 plateau yet - Countries have quite different immunity profiles at this point - The quality of B.C.'s public data, which was uhhhh open to debate at the best of times, is much lower now / Will be worth watching if B.C. changes its 4th dose strategy soon, if BA 4/5 waves plateau in other countries, and what that plateau looks like in terms of health outcomes. But in the short-term hard to imagine a scenario where transmission in B.C. doesn't go up. k thread over"

When we should be treating this pandemic and the Delta variant with the utmost seriousness, we are seeing increasing cases in schools, lack of support for unhoused people w/ COVID, and increasing community division. 1/ #bcpoli / Some will not get vaccinated, & we can’t ignore them. We have to protect them & their communities w strong public health measures like masks, ventilation, filtration, & effective contact tracing. We need better communications & transparency to bring them in, not shut them out. 2/ / We need masks for K-3 students, filtration and ventilation, and resources available to learn remotely whenever requested. COVID is already in our schools and spreading amongst our kids, it is not too late to prevent further transmission. 3/ #bcpoli / Lastly, we need to consider implementing an independent COVID-19 advisory panel that acts as a backstop for government data to increase credibility and trust. This gov’t has been burdened for 18 months, & this could support their hard work. 4/ #bcpoli"

Description: How to safely increase our opportunity for broader social interaction by carefully relaxing what are very taxing social-distancing measures How to safely and sensibly reboot the economy as much as possible, while keeping people safe This is not a simple trade-off, but an extremely complex exercise for all of us in optimizing the physical, mental, social, and economic health of the people of British Columbia in the face of an epidemic that is more challenging than we have seen in generations. This plan sets out the proposed dimensions of this balancing act based on hitting a “sweet spot” using dynamic modelling based on BC data – moving from the current targeted lockdown restrictions resulting in approximately 30% of normal social interaction, toward a sustainable 60% of social interaction, with restated levels of targeted restrictions
