Description: Ms. Opossum says: #VentAndMask, not #VentAndRelax on Twitter: "This is #COVIDAwarenessWeek. If Doc and Dix are going to announce a """de-escalation""" of masking in healthcare facilities, today, it's intentional. Don't let this demoralize you. Let it radicalize you into becoming a more ardent advocate against ableism and for #NPI."

Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "Access to safe education, and protecting our most vulnerable, should be a top govt priority. I am disappointed by the updated guidelines for preventing COVID-19 transmission in BC schools. 1/ #bcpoli / In year 3 of returning to school in a pandemic, we know better than to rely on vaccines and staying home when sick. As @a_longhurst reported, “BC’s sole reliance on vaccines is not working to prevent constant waves of (re)infection, hospitalizations and Long COVID”. 2/ #bcpoli / We know that masking, standardized ventilation and filtration, testing & vaccines contribute to better protection for all. 3/ #bcpoli / The @bcndp says they've spent $166 million upgrading ventilation in schools, but they haven’t shared which have had upgrades and which haven’t. More people in BC have died from COVID-19 in 2022 than ever before. We must recognize our reality and adapt to it. 4/4 #bcpoli"

Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "High numbers of children and teachers are missing schoo"We have all the tools to change the trajectory of this horrible situation. The only missing ingredient is courage from our leaders to be transparent about the current situation and mandate the changes that are necessary to prevent more illness and death." @SKGandhiMD #bcpoli 6/6" because they are sick. Children's wards and ERs are overwhelmed and operations for children and infants are being cancelled. #bcpoli 1/ / We need public health guidance on how to reduce transmission of the viruses that are circulating in BC. Instead, the @bcndp has quietly removed isolation requirements for people with COVID-19, reduced testing & reporting, and has given inadequate guidance on masking. 2/ / The independent review of BC's pandemic response released on Friday highlights that the @bcndp ’s repeated failure to communicate public health guidance left BCers distrustful and uncooperative with public health measures. 3/ / Where are the organized efforts of the @bcndp to keep people healthy? Vaccines are one tool, but given the conditions we are seeing right now, more needs to be done to prevent illness, especially in children. #bcpoli #healthcare 4/ / Ventilation, testing & publicly reporting data, wearing masks in high-risk public settings like classrooms, on transit, and in grocery stores - these can help reduce the risk of transmission but have received little investment by the @bcndp . 5/ /

Description: Trapped in Covid Ground Hog Day on Twitter: "So #Omicron got into our house—youngest started symptoms late 1/14 with runny nose—tested + on 1/16; husband & I tested negative up until am of 1/19 when symptoms began in previous evening; oldest felt symptoms last night—tested neg—tested again this am & positive / We isolated youngest, put #HEPA in room, window open with fan pointing out, house sys is #MERV16 , designated bathroom—keeping doors shut —had him masking if went to bathroom—etc. Still got out—likely exposed me in early stages as I was working closest to him for a while. / So despite youngest being double vaxxed—5 days after first symptoms -1/19 -he was still testing positive on #rapidtest . So looking like the ‘not infectious 5 days’ info isn’t accurate —what a surprise 🙄 / Now think of how many double vaxxed are going on official #BC #PHO advice they only have to quarantine for 5 days without test/confirmation they are no longer infectious? / Youngest tried to joke when I tested him for ‘just the sniffles’ then he was positive. Wasn’t so funny then or as the rest of us got it…🙄"

Description: BCTF on Twitter: "The Omicron variant has changed the pandemic. It's more transmissible and has a shorter incubation. Safety measures in #bced schools must change too. Thousands of students remain unvaccinated and too many workers are waiting for boosters. The #bcpoli government must act. 1/6 / When #bced schools come back in January, teachers, support staff, and students need the employers (school districts) and #bcpoli government officials to step up and protect them and all the people we go home to. Here some actions they can take: 2/6 / 1. Provide free N95 masks to those who need or want them. 2. Ensure districts and school admin are enforcing mask-wearing. 3. Implement a rapid testing regime for students and staff. 4. Allow district officials to share info on exposures and clusters. #bced #bcpoli 3/6 / 5. Limit the size of school gatherings and move all meetings to virtual. 6. Revise the daily health assessment to recognize Omicron's symptoms. 7. Stagger start, lunch, recess and end times 8. Ramp up testing and vaccinations during the winter break. #bced #bcpoli 4/6 / #BCed districts also need to address the gaps in air ventilation. There are still many school sites where MERV-13’s are not in place. Opening windows is not a real option in parts of the province that face bitter cold. #bcpoli 5/6 / Our reps at the provincial and local offices have been meeting and communicating with government and district officials throughout the week. If keeping #bced schools open is the goal, then they need to do much more and communicate it clearly before the New Year. #bcpoli 6/6"

Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "This chapter of the pandemic has me the most worried. When we should be treating this pandemic and the Delta variant with the utmost seriousness, we are seeing increasing cases in schools, lack of support for unhoused people w/ COVID, and increasing community division. 1/ #bcpoli / Some will not get vaccinated, & we can’t ignore them. We have to protect them & their communities w strong public health measures like masks, ventilation, filtration, & effective contact tracing. We need better communications & transparency to bring them in, not shut them out. 2/ / We need masks for K-3 students, filtration and ventilation, and resources available to learn remotely whenever requested. COVID is already in our schools and spreading amongst our kids, it is not too late to prevent further transmission. 3/ #bcpoli / Lastly, we need to consider implementing an independent COVID-19 advisory panel that acts as a backstop for government data to increase credibility and trust. This gov’t has been burdened for 18 months, & this could support their hard work. 4/ #bcpoli"
