COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

Title: "The Omicron variant has changed the pandemic." | British Columbia Teachers' Federation

URL: https://twitter.com/bctf/status/1474075724357111848/

Description: BCTF on Twitter: "The Omicron variant has changed the pandemic. It's more transmissible and has a shorter incubation. Safety measures in #bced schools must change too. Thousands of students remain unvaccinated and too many workers are waiting for boosters. The #bcpoli government must act. 1/6 / When #bced schools come back in January, teachers, support staff, and students need the employers (school districts) and #bcpoli government officials to step up and protect them and all the people we go home to. Here some actions they can take: 2/6 / 1. Provide free N95 masks to those who need or want them. 2. Ensure districts and school admin are enforcing mask-wearing. 3. Implement a rapid testing regime for students and staff. 4. Allow district officials to share info on exposures and clusters. #bced #bcpoli 3/6 / 5. Limit the size of school gatherings and move all meetings to virtual. 6. Revise the daily health assessment to recognize Omicron's symptoms. 7. Stagger start, lunch, recess and end times 8. Ramp up testing and vaccinations during the winter break. #bced #bcpoli 4/6 / #BCed districts also need to address the gaps in air ventilation. There are still many school sites where MERV-13’s are not in place. Opening windows is not a real option in parts of the province that face bitter cold. #bcpoli 5/6 / Our reps at the provincial and local offices have been meeting and communicating with government and district officials throughout the week. If keeping #bced schools open is the goal, then they need to do much more and communicate it clearly before the New Year. #bcpoli 6/6"

But one district on Vancouver Island has been — since the very beginning — and it seems they have had no interference or issues. Title: [Response to media investigation regarding the downplaying of in-school transmission of COVID-19 in BC]

URL: https://twitter.com/TeriMooring/status/1585372035148288000/

Description: Teri Mooring on Twitter: "I’m thankful this article was written as it confirms what teachers have known all along about school transmissions of #Covid and that unwillingness of Drs at the BCCDC to honestly report what was happening. 1/8 #bced / The @bctf had meeting after meeting with government and the BCCDC, and were for the most part the singular critical/questioning voice at these tables, only to be gaslit on so many issues including the accuracy of school data and the impact of the lack of safety measures.2/8 #bced / For example, we knew from the start that cohorts would not work as intended, we brought this to the attention of decision-makers but they were still touted as a layer of protection. We were told masks would not be effective for children though we know this is not true. 3/8. #bced / BC was the only jurisdiction to keep schools open during the entire pandemic. The @bctf supported this with the significant caveat that adequate safety measures be put in place. This did not happen. To what end? 4/8 #bced #bcpoli / We shared our surveys with government and the BCCDC that showed, among other things 80% of teachers reported their physical &mental health deteriorated over the course of the pandemic due to the lack of health &safety measures in place in schools.5/8 #bced / It appears that the conclusions around the relative safety of schools was pre-determined and that evidence was sought to support that conclusion. Teachers, students and their families were unfortunately forced to live the reality and the impact was significant. 6/8 #bced / Going forward government needs to address the issues raised in this report. The poor school data availability and reporting in BC was a result so many factors including the Health Authorities all collecting it differently. This was not an issue in other jurisdictions. 7/8 #bced / Public confidence in government and the BCCDC is critical as we manoeuvre various health crises. Work can and needs to be done to regain this confidence. 8/8 #bced #bcpoli"
