COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

Description: Rob Shaw on Twitter: "A couple hundred people, maybe, protesting vaccines at a corner of the BC legislature lawn. As bcleg protests go, not very big. Listened for several minutes as a woman on the mic explained how we are all beings of light who’ve lived across galaxies and will soon awaken. So yeah."

Title: [CHEK News reporter Skye Ryan accused by Island Health communications staff member of "perpetuating an unhelpful narrative" after asking questions about adding resources to vaccine call centres to deal with wait times]

URL: https://twitter.com/RobShaw_BC/status/1369348962931466240?s=09

Description: Rob Shaw on Twitter: "When @SkyeRyanCHEK asked @VanIslandHealth yesterday if it was adding resources to vaccine call centres to deal with wait times, the comms staffer accused her of perpetuating an “unhelpful narrative” with her Qs. Totally unacceptable response. / If VIHA can’t handle local reporters asking it THE SAME Qs they asked Dr. Henry and @adriandix yesterday - both of whom acknowledged mistakes and promised more resources - maybe it needs to look internally at its failure of leadership and staff. The media Qs are not the problem."

Title: [Comments about Vancouver Island's vaccinations]

URL: https://twitter.com/RobShaw_BC/status/1377386218090942464?s=20

Description: Rob Shaw on Twitter: "Will today’s pharmacy vaccines for 55-65 yr olds in Metro Vancouver come to Vancouver Island? @adriandix says no, Vancouver Island is already getting more vaccine based on age due to its high elderly population. Vancouver was chosen for high case load and distribution efficency. / "I can tell people on Vancouver Island that the level of vaccine hesitancy is low, the vaccine being delivered is high, and people are doing an excellent job,” says Dix. / That being said, Dix notes that the positivity rate on the Island (now more than 5%) is higher than Fraser Health’s positivity rate 1.5 months ago and he’s concerned about cases on the Island."

URL: https://twitter.com/RobShaw_BC/status/1379130102953377792?s=20

Description: Rob Shaw on Twitter: "Catching up on @adriandix interview with @CBCEarlyEdition this morning. Took a very clear shot at all the people who spent the long weekend in Tofino (which is reportedly very busy): “Traveling to enjoy the beach in Tofino isn’t essential right now." / Caller asked Dix (and I hear this a lot) why BC doesn’t shut down BC Ferries to protect the Island. “Vancouver Island needs the ferries and it’s very important not to just people, many of whom are travelling for essential reasons.” Adds island needs supplies + food."

Description: Rob Shaw on Twitter: "23 members of @uvic 's faculty of law have written to prez asking UVIC to make vaccines mandatory for students. Urges UVIC to ignore Dr. Henry’s position that only BCgov can set that rule. Says BC has no legal basis to prevent UVIC from a vaccine mandate. https://bit.ly/3gzln9m / 'In our view, the University of Victoria has the authority to go beyond the minimum safety standards set by the Provincial Health Officer to address the risks posed by Covid-19 on campus,' the group writes, in letter to UVIC president and board. / 'The government has identified no legal basis for assuming jurisdiction over on-campus health and safety matters, and no legal basis for prohibiting the University from adopting a vaccine mandate.'"
