COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

Description: Perhaps my question yesterday was not straightforward enough. Today I got straight to the point: does the Minister of Health Adrian Dix acknowledge that COVID-19 is airborne? No answer - just spin. It is astonishing that what should be a simple question to answer leads to a contortionist act from our government. The WHO, Canada Health, and the international scientific community all agree that COVID-19 is airborne. It is crucial for this gov’t to recognize that COVID-19 is airborne because that creates a guiding point for decision making and measuring success. Ensuring every British Columbian has access to N95s becomes a priority. Acknowledging COVID-19 airborne means there is no excuse to not invest in better ventilation and HEPA filters in schools and healthcare settings. It sends a direct message to all health authorities to implement the necessary policies to combat airborne transmission. The COVID-19 pandemic is not over. Government needs to focus on protections for people. Clear information, reliable data, N95s, rapid tests, ventilation, filtration of indoor air.

URL: https://twitter.com/AdamPOlsen/status/1567230263897501698/

Description: Adam Olsen on Twitter: "Today our kids return to school for the 3rd time since the pandemic began. On @CBCEarlyEdition this morning I spoke about what we can do to better protect our kids and communities from #COVID19 and value the work of teachers across BC. 1/ #bcpoli #bced / The new @CDCofBC guidelines regarding aerosol transmission make a clear case for high air filtration standards and yet the @bcndp have woefully underfunded ventilation upgrades to better protect our children. 2/ #bcpoli #bced #COVID19BC / This @bcndp govt has continually downgraded the impact of #COVID19, consistently saying it’s a “mild disease” The reality is that more people died in BC from this virus in 2022 than any year prior + long-COVID impacts people's long-term health and well-being. 3/ #bcpoli #bced / Children with disabilities are being asked to stay home because resources aren’t available to them. This goes against the promise of a public education system that is accessible to all children. Completely unacceptable! 4/ #bcpoli #bced #COVID19BC / Operating budgets of school districts are at a breaking point in BC + schools are struggling with staff shortages. Teacher wages in BC are the 2nd lowest in Canada. Gov't must offer teachers a competitive wage that reflects their value and contribution. 5/ #bcpoli #bced / The @bcndp needs to change the funding formula, stop downloading costs onto school districts with no resources to make up for the increased costs, and address the growing pay gap with other jurisdictions. 6/ #bcpoli #bced / Training more teachers is only part of the solution. Increasing teachers' wages so they can afford to live in British Columbia is critical or else the newly trained teachers will be leaving our province to teach in a province that values them! 7/7 #bcpoli #bced"

Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "The school year is right around the corner, but our #COVID19 plans are outdated. The #DeltaVariant has taken over - and it is more transmissible. This puts unvaccinated kids at risk, as we saw with the 150 kids <10 yrs old who tested positive in June and July. 1/ #bcpoli / A US report found that w/o masks, 70% of a classroom could contract the #DeltaVariant. As it stands, kids will not be adequately protected in schools - no vaccines for those under 12, no masks, even physical distancing of 2 m is no longer recommended. 2/ #bcpoli / It is important to prepare for a safe return and set realistic expectations in classrooms, but this gov’t needs to show they are continuing to take the risks of #LongCOVID seriously for unvaccinated children. 3/ #bcpoli / We need smaller class sizes & proper distancing, enhanced ventilation, mandatory masking, & contact tracing. All of this needs to be in place before children and teachers return to schools in September. 4/4 #bcpoli"

Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "We call on the @bcndp gov't to implement concrete measures with clear policies that recognize #COVID19 is an airborne virus. To reduce transmissions, protect our healthcare system, & minimize disruption to society gov't must implement the following. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC #bced / Hospitalizations are at an all-time high and surgeries and medical procedures are cancelled, but on Friday this government announced that access to testing will be limited, and that British Columbians are expected to manage #COVID19 on their own. 2/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / The @bcndp 's failure to build policies on the evidence that #COVID19 is airborne has led to inadequate communication, inaccurate information, & a lack of essential tools for the public to understand why decisions are made or how to achieve our shared goals. 3/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / We reiterate our call for an independent science table, which would not only provide accountability for the government’s stated goals, it would also provide clarity for British Columbians on what will effectively mitigate the spread of #COVID19. 4/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / The last 2 years have been difficult for everybody. While we all wish this pandemic were over, there is no guarantee there won't be another wave. URL: https://twitter.com/SoniaFurstenau/status/1502034738906763288/

Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "It has been a long 2 years for British Columbians. Many people are eager for the pandemic to be over, and others are still anxious about opening up. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / I am deeply concerned that without a plan for the future and clear information on why we’re making decisions, removing these measures will create more confusion, allow for greater transmission of COVID, and risk distrust in government. 2/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / Learning to live with this virus should not mean pretending it is over; it should mean that we keep simple, universal basic protections in places where they keep us safe and provide a predictable plan that we can work towards and anticipate. 3/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / We should be providing free N95 masks to all who want one, installing filtration in schools & public settings, subsidizing HEPA filters for other settings, and making rapid tests widely and freely available. We should be protecting everyone from the risk of #LongCovid. 4/ #bcpoli / Removing masking entirely sends a signal that the pandemic is over. Yesterday we had 14 deaths, a new variant is circulating around the world, and many epidemiologists and our provincial health officer have suggested we could see a fifth wave this year. 5/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / We should have kept masks in place for essential services like public transit and other high-transmission settings with low ventilation. This would protect our most vulnerable, while opening up elective activities for people who are comfortable. 6/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / British Columbians deserve the same predictability and clarity they received last summer with the re-opening plan. Without a plan and tools in place, we risk repeating the damaging cycle of imposing and removing mandates. 7/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / Rebuilding and maintaining trust should be this government’s top priority. This government’s lack of transparency over the past year and failure to explain their decisions has resulted in an erosion of our collective sense of responsibility to each other. 8/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / Without clear guidelines for imposing or rescinding mandates, British Columbians will only grow more disenfranchised. 9/9 #bcpoli #COVID19BC"

The #bcpoli government must act. 1/6 / When #bced schools come back in January, teachers, support staff, and students need the employers (school districts) and #bcpoli government officials to step up and protect them and all the people we go home to. Implement a rapid testing regime for students and staff. 4. Allow district officials to share info on exposures and clusters. #bced #bcpoli 3/6 / 5. Limit the size of school gatherings and move all meetings to virtual. 6. Revise the daily health assessment to recognize Omicron's symptoms. 7. Stagger start, lunch, recess and end times 8. Opening windows is not a real option in parts of the province that face bitter cold. #bcpoli 5/6 / Our reps at the provincial and local offices have been meeting and communicating with government and district officials throughout the week. If keeping #bced schools open is the goal, then they need to do much more and communicate it clearly before the New Year. #bcpoli 6/6"

Description: BCTF on Twitter: "We are pleased to hear that #BCpoli has ordered a phased reopening of #BCed schools to allow for planning and implementation of new safety measures, including staggered start times, reduced density, and virtual meetings. 1/4 / It was also great to hear the Minister reiterate the importance of mask compliance, as that is something we’ve heard has been a significant issue in many #BCed districts. 2/4 / Many questions remain for #bcpoli, including what a rapid testing strategy will look like, as well as how #BCed public notification of exposures and clusters will change in light of the new variant. 3/4 / We were disappointed that the announcement offered no indication that boosters will be fast-tracked for #BCed, nor did Minister Whiteside commit to making N95 masks available in schools or proactively addressing the outstanding ventilation concerns in many schools. #bcpoli 4/4"

The uneven approach between life outside school and inside classrooms will cause disruptions and add stress to teachers, support staff, and admin. / When #bced schools return after spring break, we need: - Free N95s for all staff and students who need or want them. - Robust campaigns to increase vaccine rates in children. - Ongoing improvements to ventilation. - Trauma-informed support for students and staff. #bcpoli"

Description: Scientific and policy bodies’ failure to acknowledge and act on the evidence base for airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in a timely way is both a mystery and a scandal. In this study, we applied theories from Bourdieu to address the question, “How was a partial and partisan scientific account of SARS-CoV-2 transmission constructed and maintained, leading to widespread imposition of infection control policies which de-emphasised airborne transmission?”.
