COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

Description: Tom Jackman on Twitter: "I warned @sd68bc trustees last March (see attached letter) that the school safety measures in place were insufficient, and that masking should be required indoors for all of K-12. That was true, but it's even more true now with Delta swirling in our classrooms."

Title: [Comment on Dr. Bonnie Henry's presence at first pediatric vaccinations]

URL: https://twitter.com/frozen/status/1465425977329139720/

Description: Tom Jackman on Twitter: "A few questions. This should have been the scene in BC LAST WEEK. Also, remember when BC wouldn't allow vaccine selfies? When did that stop being a thing? Finally, why does everything have to be about Dr. Henry? Why must she always make herself the focus? #bcpoli #bced / Is this really part of Henry's job description? Attending the warm fuzzy things to generate goodwill towards her personal brand? And as others have pointed out, why is she wearing an inadequate mask? BC kids were forced to wait another week so that Henry could have her photo op? / People want to believe DBH is a kind person who cares about kids. But where was her kindness when my son was being made fun of by his classmates because he wore a mask to protect his vulnerable dad? Where was her kindness when he pleaded for a mask mandate in K-3 this August?"

Title: [Response to Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools letter regarding return from March break]

URL: https://twitter.com/frozen/status/1508467761990668295/

Description: Tom Jackman on Twitter: "On March 10, Dr. Henry announced that schools would be a "mask positive environment" when kids returned from spring break. But it seems @sd68bc superintendent @ssaywell couldn't be bothered to encourage mask wearing. Soon, the only thing positive will be the rapid tests. #bced / From top to bottom, Canadian officials continue to push the narrative that the pandemic is winding down, meaning we can let our guard down. The consequences are predictable: More people will get sick; some of them will become disabled; the most unlucky ones will die—needlessly."

Description: Tom Jackman on Twitter: "Today—the same day Dr. Henry surrendered BC to another pandemic wave— @brish_ti reports that my local hospital has so much COVID that patients are being treated in hallways because there's no other space left. Despite Henry's claims to the contrary, this isn't a good place to be."

URL: https://twitter.com/frozen/status/1571253216364593152/

Description: Tom Jackman on Twitter: "Look what my wife just spotted in a local pediatric immunization clinic, as my son awaits his covid booster. This is the correct advice, whereas Dr. Bonnie Henry's notion of 'superboosting' your body with a periodic dose of covid is counterproductive nonsense."

Description: Tom Jackman on Twitter: "I am not a partisan, but the leader of the BC Green Party, @SoniaFurstenau , asked an excellent question of @adriandix this morning: In light of recent revelations, "How can we trust his word and the word of the Provincial Health Officer?" Mr. Dix did not answer the question."

Title: [Clips from Dr. Bonnie Henry's January 3, 2023 interview on CBC's The Early Edition]

URL: https://twitter.com/i/status/1610327741299306496/

Description: Tom Jackman on Twitter: "This morning, @CBCStephenQuinn tried to get BC's Provincial Health Officer to recommend masks without equivocation. Dr. Henry would not. It's not hyperbole to say that more infections will occur over the next weeks and months because of her inability to recommend masking. / There's something Dr. Sueussian about Dr. Henry's approach to masking: I could not, would not on a bus I will not, will not, without a fuss. I will not wear them on a train, I will not wear them near a plane. Not in the dark! Not in a tree! Not in a car! You let me be! / Dr. Henry is the lead public health official in BC, and yet she's apparently being overruled on masks by the @adriandix or @Dave_Eby . Why is she undermining this government's health and safety guidance with her own muddled messaging on masks?"
