COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

Description: Mick Sweetman on Twitter: "I will say that I have been surprised this week with how many students have voluntarily kept wearing masks in classrooms at @VIUniversity . In the four classes I attended in person this week, there were some classes with 100% wearing masks and the others had 90%+ with masks on. / And to the best of my knowledge no faculty or student in those classes have asked people to keep wearing masks, most students have just kept wearing them on their own."

Title: [Comments on lack of capacity and urgency at Island Health's vaccination clinics in Nanaimo]

URL: https://twitter.com/MickSweetman/status/1473030275215020040/

Description: Mick Sweetman on Twitter: "I deleted a previous tweet as the small clinic in #Nanaimo was open this weekend for 5-11 year-old appointments. I regret the error, but the bigger point about a lack of capacity and urgency stands. / When it is open the aim is for 1,000 shots a day, but that is resulting in long lines of people waiting for their shot inside the mall. The physical space and number of staff are reduced compared to the mass clinic at Beben Park in the spring/summer (which was well organized). / Follow up, of sorts, I asked Island Health to clarify what days the vaccine clinics are open this week and was told that they would look into it, then the clinic location website with that information was taken down entirely. / Just wanted to pull this over from another thread. Looks like the #Nanaimo vaccine clinic will be open this week for adult first-dose walk ins and 5-11 year old vaccinations now with the exception of the stat holidays."

Description: Mick Sweetman on Twitter: "There is no evidence that there isn't capacity among trained VIHA staff to immunize 7 days a week at levels comparable to the mass clinics in the spring and summer. This is a decision by the VIHA management, not frontline healthcare workers (who btw are redeployed regularly). / If VIHA management is having trouble staffing their clinics they should post more full-time positions for staff doing immunizations and not rely on casual staff to pick up shifts. Closing clinics and reducing hours is no solution. Immunizing more people now will help HCWs later."
