Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "This chapter of the pandemic has me the most worried. When we should be treating this pandemic and the Delta variant with the utmost seriousness, we are seeing increasing cases in schools, lack of support for unhoused people w/ COVID, and increasing community division. 1/ #bcpoli / Some will not get vaccinated, & we can’t ignore them. We have to protect them & their communities w strong public health measures like masks, ventilation, filtration, & effective contact tracing. We need better communications & transparency to bring them in, not shut them out. 2/ / We need masks for K-3 students, filtration and ventilation, and resources available to learn remotely whenever requested. COVID is already in our schools and spreading amongst our kids, it is not too late to prevent further transmission. 3/ #bcpoli / Lastly, we need to consider implementing an independent COVID-19 advisory panel that acts as a backstop for government data to increase credibility and trust. This gov’t has been burdened for 18 months, & this could support their hard work. 4/ #bcpoli"

Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "On their #COVID19 policies this gov't likes to say “we follow the science." But our policies are not based on the raw data, they are based on the values viewed as important by gov't & used to interpret the science. Today I want to talk about those values. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / Sonia Furstenau @SoniaFurstenau · 19h Replying to @SoniaFurstenau Yesterday the BCCDC updated their guidelines to say that public health is balancing preventing illness and going to work & socializing. That is the crux of the growing frustration we're seeing. Increasingly the @bcndp are choosing to value work over people. /2 #bcpoli #COVIDBC / This has been done under the guise of ensuring we “rebuild” our economy - and there lies the misunderstanding. @jjhorgan himself said in a not too distant past “People are the economy of BC.” 3/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / If gov’t policy continues to allow for people to get #COVID19 then we won’t be able to rebuild because the most important element, British Columbians themselves, will continue to be sick and unable to fully participate in our society. 4/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / By putting the onus of public health responses on individuals this @bncdp gov’t is exacerbating existing inequities in our society - those who can isolate or can afford to WFH are less likely to get sick - meanwhile the health of the most vulnerable is left to chance. 5/ #bcpoli / If we truly want to “build back better” and overcome this pandemic then our leading value used to “follow the science” must be the health of all British Columbians which means doing everything possible to lower transmissions. 6/6 #bcpoli #COVID19BC"

Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "We call on the @bcndp gov't to implement concrete measures with clear policies that recognize #COVID19 is an airborne virus. To reduce transmissions, protect our healthcare system, & minimize disruption to society gov't must implement the following. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC #bced / Hospitalizations are at an all-time high and surgeries and medical procedures are cancelled, but on Friday this government announced that access to testing will be limited, and that British Columbians are expected to manage #COVID19 on their own. 2/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / The @bcndp 's failure to build policies on the evidence that #COVID19 is airborne has led to inadequate communication, inaccurate information, & a lack of essential tools for the public to understand why decisions are made or how to achieve our shared goals. 3/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / We reiterate our call for an independent science table, which would not only provide accountability for the government’s stated goals, it would also provide clarity for British Columbians on what will effectively mitigate the spread of #COVID19. 4/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / The last 2 years have been difficult for everybody. While we all wish this pandemic were over, there is no guarantee there won't be another wave. Good leadership would acknowledge these truths and put plans in place for the next wave and the one after that. 5/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / It’s not enough to put the burden on individuals to vaccinate and then provide no other safety measures to reduce infection rates. The people of BC deserve proactive science-based leadership from their gov't. 6/6 #bcpoli #COVID19BC #COVID19 #bced"

Minister Dix said this gov’t follows the “science” but not once said the words “COVID-19 is airborne”. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / We need to restore that crucial confidence in public health guidance and democracy. To do that, governments must be able to acknowledge mistakes and be willing to improve. 2/ #bcpoli #COVID19 #COVID19BC / Patients, healthcare workers, teachers, and others are not being provided a critical tool to protect themselves against an airborne virus: an N95 mask. Nurses have filed a human rights complaint for being denied access to N95s their workplace. 3/ #bcpoli / This government has refused to give rapid tests to the public, has failed to accurately slow the spread of this virus, and has rejected credible science from the @WHO that #COVID19 is airborne. 4/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / Yesterday BC Children’s Hospital argued that #COVID19 is not airborne on Twitter – a message too often coming from Health Authorities in this province, and adding to the confusion people are feeling. 5/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / It is worrying to see this gov’t refuse to acknowledge that #COVID19 is airborne and have no justification for being out of line with the scientific consensus. Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "It has been a long 2 years for British Columbians. Many people are eager for the pandemic to be over, and others are still anxious about opening up. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / I am deeply concerned that without a plan for the future and clear information on why we’re making decisions, removing these measures will create more confusion, allow for greater transmission of COVID, and risk distrust in government. 2/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / Learning to live with this virus should not mean pretending it is over; it should mean that we keep simple, universal basic protections in places where they keep us safe and provide a predictable plan that we can work towards and anticipate. 3/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / We should be providing free N95 masks to all who want one, installing filtration in schools & public settings, subsidizing HEPA filters for other settings, and making rapid tests widely and freely available. We should be protecting everyone from the risk of #LongCovid. 4/ #bcpoli / Removing masking entirely sends a signal that the pandemic is over. Yesterday we had 14 deaths, a new variant is circulating around the world, and many epidemiologists and our provincial health officer have suggested we could see a fifth wave this year. 5/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / We should have kept masks in place for essential services like public transit and other high-transmission settings with low ventilation. This would protect our most vulnerable, while opening up elective activities for people who are comfortable. 6/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / British Columbians deserve the same predictability and clarity they received last summer with the re-opening plan. Without a plan and tools in place, we risk repeating the damaging cycle of imposing and removing mandates. 7/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / Rebuilding and maintaining trust should be this government’s top priority. This government’s lack of transparency over the past year and failure to explain their decisions has resulted in an erosion of our collective sense of responsibility to each other. 8/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / Without clear guidelines for imposing or rescinding mandates, British Columbians will only grow more disenfranchised. 9/9 #bcpoli #COVID19BC"

While it is good to see proactive action from this government the terms make it clear this is not about trust-building and accountability but rather a communication exercise. 1/ #bcpoli / I have been advocating for transparency on how decisions are made from the very beginning of this pandemic. This review is a crucial step in becoming more resilient, but it hinges on how well it is done. 2/ / This “independent review” won’t analyze policy decisions made by the provincial health officer, the government, or anything about economic recovery. And yet, our Human Rights Commissioner said that the sudden removal of the mask mandate will have profound effects on vulnerable people in BC. 3/ #bpcoli / “[…] the mask mandate is not about eliminating risk; it is about sharing the risk burden across society rather than transferring it to a marginalized or medically vulnerable minority.” 4/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC / . @humanrights4BC is saying that the decision from this government to remove the mask mandate is harming the most vulnerable in our province. Children's wards and ERs are overwhelmed and operations for children and infants are being cancelled. #bcpoli 1/ / We need public health guidance on how to reduce transmission of the viruses that are circulating in BC. Instead, the @bcndp has quietly removed isolation requirements for people with COVID-19, reduced testing & reporting, and has given inadequate guidance on masking. 2/ / The independent review of BC's pandemic response released on Friday highlights that the @bcndp ’s repeated failure to communicate public health guidance left BCers distrustful and uncooperative with public health measures. 3/ / Where are the organized efforts of the @bcndp to keep people healthy? Vaccines are one tool, but given the conditions we are seeing right now, more needs to be done to prevent illness, especially in children. #bcpoli #healthcare 4/ / Ventilation, testing & publicly reporting data, wearing masks in high-risk public settings like classrooms, on transit, and in grocery stores - these can help reduce the risk of transmission but have received little investment by the @bcndp . 5/ /

Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "Today in Question Period I again asked @adriandix if his gov’t is collecting #LongCovid data, if they are working to help those affected by chronic symptoms, & if they will listen to #bced calls for more safety measures. I didn’t really get an answer to any of the Qs. 1/ #bcpoli Instead he noted other figures, programs gov’t is funding and reiterating the seriousness of the virus. This misses the point as to why collecting #LongCovid data is so important - because it allows us to create better policy and increases trust in gov’t decision making. 2/ If you want to read the full thread on today's Question Period or the rest of the work we do in the House follow the @bcgreencaucus ! 3/3 #bcpoli #COVID19 #LongCovid"

Mr. Dix did not answer the question."

Description: Perhaps my question yesterday was not straightforward enough. Today I got straight to the point: does the Minister of Health Adrian Dix acknowledge that COVID-19 is airborne? No answer - just spin. It is astonishing that what should be a simple question to answer leads to a contortionist act from our government. The WHO, Canada Health, and the international scientific community all agree that COVID-19 is airborne. It is crucial for this gov’t to recognize that COVID-19 is airborne because that creates a guiding point for decision making and measuring success. Ensuring every British Columbian has access to N95s becomes a priority. Acknowledging COVID-19 airborne means there is no excuse to not invest in better ventilation and HEPA filters in schools and healthcare settings. It sends a direct message to all health authorities to implement the necessary policies to combat airborne transmission. The COVID-19 pandemic is not over. Government needs to focus on protections for people. Clear information, reliable data, N95s, rapid tests, ventilation, filtration of indoor air.
