COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

URL: https://hashilthsa.com/news/2020-09-15/coalition-nations-push-bc-share-covid-locations/

Description: As the number of B.C.’s coronavirus infections continue to rise, First Nations are left with no idea of how close these cases are to their communities, a vulnerability that a coalition of Indigenous governments is taking to B.C.’s Information and Privacy Commissioner. The application was announced today by the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, Heiltsuk Nation and Tsilhqot’in National Government in an effort to gain information from the B.C. Ministry of Health on where new cases are – without disclosing a person’s identity.

Description: Adam Olsen on Twitter: "If the so-called “freedom convoy” planning on visiting #Victoria wants to replicate what we watched for weeks in Ottawa then they should stay home. For one there was nothing peaceful about it and we do not want that on Vancouver Island. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC #yyj / With the health measures lifted last week and the vaccine card given a clear end date, I am left to wonder what #COVID19BC measures this so-called “freedom convoy” are protesting. 2/ #bcpoli #yyj / While truly peaceful protests have an important place in our democracy, I hope that @jjhorgan and @mikefarnworthbc have put robust measures in place so that we do not see an entrenched occupation in #Victoria like we saw in #Ottawa. 3/3 #bcpoli #COVID19BC #yyj"

Description: BC Today on Twitter: ". @SoniaFurstenau follows up on @brish_ti 's reporting for @CapitalDailyVic about Island Health being overrun with patients. She asks health Minister @adriandix to affirm people seeking care won't be turned away from hospitals #bcpoli / Dix states that the memo referenced in @CapitalDailyVic 's reporting - discussing acquiring hotel rooms - was about patients ready for rehabilitation #bcpoli / Furstenau follows up, saying BC's #Covid19 data is so patchy, people are learning about the continuing impact of the pandemic from reporters not public officials. Dix maintains BC regularly reports useful information about Covid. "Transparency is important," he says #bcpoli"

Title: [Information about filing FOI requests]

URL: https://twitter.com/npescod/status/1486589011875426308/

Description: Nicholas M. Pescod on Twitter: "I've filed a handful of FOI's in my time as a journalist (lots with the @NanaimoBulletin and a bunch now at @CHEK_News ) I've included some example requests in my piece for anyone wondering what they can FOI. @CHEK_News #bcpoli https://cheknews.ca/explainer-what-is-an-foi-request-and-how-do-you-make-one-922922/ / 'The citizens ultimately own the government, the citizens ultimately employ the bureaucrats, the politicians, the systems that put the politicians into their jobs. So we’re the employers, we own the enterprise, as you might say.' - @bobmackin / I hope this piece not only informs members of the public but also fellow journalists. It's a very big read, but if the world of FOI's is something you're interested in but don't fully understand, this piece should help ... I hope. @CHEK_News #bcpoli / ou've created an FOI. You know which public body you will send it to, but you don't know how to do that. Well, here's a list of how to submit an FOI to all municipalities on Vancouver Island and other public bodies. My other latest @CHEK_News piece. / This list is enormous and while going through it I discovered that Esquimalt is now charging a $10 fee for all FOI requests. Strathcona Regional District appears to have a $25 fee in place. @CHEK_News #bcpoli / I would like to thank @ErinHaluschak for helping me out with the municipalities in the Comox Valley as there was next to no information about their FOI submission process on their websites. @CHEK_News #bcpoli / This list is long and not all public bodies are on it but Island Health is 👀 If you see any errors in the list, please let me know! @CHEK_News #bcpoli / Adding to this thread: There are many local and regional public interest news stories that have come as a result of the FOI system. I will share a few examples of ones that I've written starting with this @CHEK_news piece. https://cheknews.ca/new-data-shows-how-fast-covid-19-spread-to-students-staff-at-start-of-school-year-917165/ / For this story, data on exposures at post-secondary institutions had never been made public from IH, thus the need for an FOI. / This was back in 2018 when there were major concerns going with expenses being made by senior managers at the City of Nanaimo. An FOI showed a senior manager used a city-issued purchase card multiple times to pay for flights that were not work-related. / Anyone who was in Nanaimo in 2018 will likely remember Discontent City. How much did it cost to clean it up? Nearly $500,000 — a figure only released after an FOI request was made. / You can use the FOI system to (sometimes) obtain reports that municipalities hire consultants to produce and then never release publicly. / Again there are many examples, just google FOI + public body name and you will find them."
