COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

Title: "Here r some thoughts about wearing an N95 for 5-8hrs/day."

URL: https://twitter.com/chrisalecanada/status/1491489411669716994/

Description: Chris Alemany 🇺🇦 🇨🇦 🇪🇸 on Twitter: "1/ I've rotated through five N95 masks (Eternity - Particulate Respirator - 95PFE-L2 ECAN95 - Shoppers DM - $50/20. Bought at Xmas). One every work day since Jan 10. It's week 5. Here r some thoughts about wearing an N95 for 5-8hrs/day. Excuse the messy shelves :) 🧵 #covid19bc / 2/ This morning I notice the inside of today's mask was looking soiled around the nose, inside. Less so on the outside. All the guidance says if they look soiled at all, you should discard them. So this one's gone from the rotation. This is after about 4 days of actual use. / 3/ I'm going to change how I'm hanging my masks. We have had construction around the building and I've noticed the smell of wood in the mask when I put it on. I think it is particulate accumulating on the inside. I'll figure out how to hang them so dust doesn't settle inside. / 4/ After the first week or so of wearing the masks and getting used to how to wear them both comfortably and properly, I've found them to be more comfortable and working better on the 2nd and 3rd time I wear them. Likely because they are becoming better molded to my face. / 5/ Some people remark it looks tight, but it doesn't feel that way. The edges and fabric of the mask are soft, comfortable. The bridge of my nose was getting a little sore, but that seems to have lessened. I'm probably fitting it better. (I should have shaved this morning lol) / 6/ For comparison, here's an extra surgical-type mask I have. The fit is nothing like the N95. I hardly feel like it's doing anything at all. And my old cloth mask now feels both useless and diiirrrty. / 7/ It did take a little bit to get used to breathing in the N95. It's not stressful, it's just different. You get used to it. Now I don't feel any difference whether I'm walking or speaking to people or I'm alone. Plus, it keeps my face warm when it's chilly outside. :) / 8/ I've broken the strap on 2 surgical and one N95. That's the weakest link I guess. But overall I've found the N95s comfortable, robust, and easy. If you're not already using an N95 or KN95, try them out. It's worth it, they're reusable, they're effective. Hope this helps. /end"

Title: "Tell me again that school transmission doesn't happen."

URL: https://twitter.com/chrisalecanada/status/1481689502947037188/

Description: Chris Alemany 🇺🇦 🇨🇦 🇪🇸 on Twitter: "1/ Welp. It's official. Our family is, as my now home-sick son calls us, a #covidsquad 🧵 His friend went home from school yesterday. Last night he started to feel off. This morning: phlegmy, headache, loss of appetite. Tell me again that school transmission doesn't happen. / 2/ But wait it gets better. Mom phones 811 for advice and possible test. Is told, no test. Only 55+ or HCWs are being tested. (so those case numbers are even less accurate than we already know.) He should stay home 5 days and then stay until asymptomatic. / 3/ We should "evaluate" whether we have guests but the other 3 of us are free to go to work/school unless we develop symptoms. So there you go. The mass infection experiment has reached my household. #covid19bc #bced #bcpse / off to @BCschoolCovid to put in a report... / PS. As per new 'enhanced' measures, my son and his friends sat around their lunch table together yesterday. They've split the school into two halves (~500 kids), split lunch times, lower floor/upper floor. Valiant effort and I am glad they made the attempt, but obviously useless. / PPS. Before school started our family all made guesses on when the first functional closure would be at the #portalberni high school. I said Wednesday. Does no closure but my kid gets exposed count? / PPPS. I know it's supposed to be anonymous but since the new exposure messages just went out: ✋ https://twitter.com/ExposureWatch/status/1481733602945679363 / Update: Mom sick now. Daughter and I still fine. Wonder if this would have happened if the kids were online. 🤔 Now a promising semester is off the rails for one. Stress on the other as class length doubled. Dad possibly asymptomatically spreading at work. #COVID19 in 2022"
