NGOs in Nepal

Collected by: Cornell University Library

Archived since: Oct, 2018

Description:

Throughout recorded history, Nepal has nestled between the giant cultural formations of India to the south and China/Tibet to the north. With the globalization of modern times, international interests and concerns draw Nepal into contact with more distant corners of the world. There are now a multitude of non-governmental organizations at work in Nepal, many headquartered in the Kathmandu Valley. Some are international NGOs and some are purely Nepali, some are long running and some are startups. All of the websites archived here are NGO self-presentations of their aspirations and their achievements on various fronts—humanitarian, environmental, economic, political, religious, and more.

Title: Resource Centre for Primary Health Care

URL: http://recphec.org.np/

Description: During the second half of 1980s, a group of enthusiastic health professionals and development activists initiated discussions among themselves about the poor health status of Nepali people, its causes and possible solution. Series of discussion revealed that one of the reasons was the lack of relevant health information resulting in irrational health planning and decision-making. It was also realized that there is a need of a group action of committed health and development professionals to advocate on issues related to the health rights of the people. The group felt that the discussion should be brought in broader mass and therefore decided to institutionalize the process, which had already been addressed in small groups. During the Panchayat system in Nepal, before 1990, it was extremely difficult to be registered as non-governmental organization. Therefore, RECPHEC registered itself as a non-profit making cottage industry under the company act in 1989. Political change in the country made possible for the RECPHEC to be established as non-governmental organization only in 1991. - From the website 2018.12.03 Organization founded in 1991
