Description: The Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry (HIA) is a public inquiry examining allegations of child abuse in children's homes and other residential institutions in Northern Ireland from 1922 to 1995. It studied allegations of abuse in 22 homes and other residential institutions run by the state, local authorities, the Catholic Church, the Church of Ireland and the children's charity Barnardo's. The inquiry found that some children were physically and sexually abused by priests and lay people entrusted to look after them. It is the biggest child abuse public inquiry ever held in the UK.
