Description: American University's undergraduate research journal Clocks and Clouds is an American University undergraduate research journal that publishes articles on the cutting edge of political science, international relations, and public policy. Through the journal, our authors contribute to the intellectual dialogue both within the American University community and in broader academia. Philosopher Karl Popper’s “clocks and clouds” metaphor describes the two ends of the spectrum of predictability in social science: Clouds represent the disorderly and irregular, and clocks represent the predictable and rational. By providing a venue for top undergraduate research, Clocks and Clouds aims to find the clocks amidst the clouds.

Title: The Hardwick Portrait of Elizabeth I of England: Queenship and Friendship

URL: https://omeka.library.american.edu/s/hardwickportrait/

Collection: American University

Description: Welcome to this digital exhibition, a culmination of a year of research on early modern England, the Hardwick Portrait (c. 1590-99) of Queen Elizabeth I and its owner Bess of Hardwick, and the politically advantageous symbolism of the animals and flowers depicted in the work. The project helped to satisfy the requirements of a Master of Arts degree in Art History at American University in Washington, D.C., which was awarded to me in May of 2019. Section one of the exhibition closely anlyzes the Hardwick Portrait and related works to reveal strategies by which the image aggrandized Elizabeth to the advantage of Bess of Hardwick. Section two analyzes selected representations of Elizabeth through the lens of gender, to reveal how the portraits helped to shape and strengthen the queen's political authority: the Hardwick Portrait is one such work. Section three investigates the animals and flowers that bedeck Elizabeth's gown in the portrait to reveal their emblematic function in shaping the image of the Queen as an ideal ruler. Reading the sections of the exhibition in order, by clicking "next" at the bottom of each screen, is recommended. The site can also be navigated by clicking the menu symbol at the upper right. A bar with section titles will appear on the left; click the texts for access. Clicking on the thumbnails throughout the site will call up larger images in most cases. Based on the "Geocaching" trend, Eaglecaching works to connect individuals with the school in ways not commonly seen. In doing so, seekers are able to see American in ways previously unseen while also honing their critical thinking abilities. Description: The Peace Corps Brazil site was launched in July 2000, to bring together the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCV) who served in Brazil between 1962 and 1980. According to the official Peace Corps website, 4,150 volunteers served in Brazil, many of which worked in community development programs, between 1962 and 1981 when it was officially shuttered due to the increasingly strained political relationship between Brazil and the United States. The Peace Corps Brazil site contains several back issues of the Friends of Brazil newsletter and the Chopp Talk newsletter, Peace Corps Brazil reunion information, information on RPCVs organized by state, group, and staff, RPCV and staff news, photos, stories, and histories of the Peace Corps in Brazil. The website was donated in June 2015 to the American University Library Peace Corps Community Archive by Gene Whitmer, who began and maintained the site until it was shut down in July 2015.
