Public School 174 Queens

Public School 174 Queens, located in Rego Park in New York City, is named after the 19th century American painter William Sidney Mount. It's a school heavily committed to the arts and we have modern dance and ballroom dance programs, collaborations with many of NYC's art institutions, botanical gardens and the new NY Historical Society. Our borough of Queens is known as one of the most diverse areas in the United States. We are also proud of the fact that Queens has one of the largest public library systems in the country and our libraries are among those with the highest circulation of any library system in the U.S. (We're guessing we’re second only to the Library of Congress.) The school and our third grade class are international and we speak many languages. As third grade TAG students we loved learning about archiving and choosing collections that spoke to us. The idea of archiving sites is new to us and we like the idea that we can go back to these sites when we’re older and look at what we liked to visit online in 2012. We just never thought that we could save web sites and we assumed that when sites changed, the old ones were gone forever. It’s a good idea to archive sites which we’ll appreciate more when we get older. Our school is international and we speak many languages. Our school is tucked away in an area called The Crescents and you might not even realize you’re in New York City if you came to our quiet neighborhood. Nevertheless, we’re in the Big Apple and can take advantage of all the things our city has to offer.

Here are some things we said when we found out about the web archiving project:

“They’re really going to listen to us and let us choose sites to save? We’re eight!”

“Does my mother have to choose the sites or can I really choose?”

“Really cool. I never thought why it would be important. When I’m older I’ll know more and then I’ll be happy we saved those sites.”

“They’re letting US choose. Do you have a note I can show my parents so they’ll believe me?”

“Can we do this again next year? I have so many new places I visit and I want to be able to save them. I never knew we could and I don’t want my favorite sites to change or disappear.”

Note: Teacher Neme Alperstein has been privileged to participate in this incredible program before but this year she is in a new school and was excited to bring web archiving to her new third grade. The challenges were different because the children were much younger than Neme Alperstein’s previous classes but the children rose to the occasion and loved the independence and ability to choose what they enjoy online.
