Collection: Websites: Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada

Description: This website for the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada is archived to preserve its content. The congregation was founded in Le Puy, France on October 15, 1650, and from this foundation, branched out worldwide. The Canadian congregations descended from the foundation at Carondelet, St. Louis, Missouri on March 25, 1836. Mother Delphine Fontbonne, a niece of Mother St. John, and three other Sisters travelled from Philadelphia to found the Toronto congregation in 1851. The next year, in 1852, three Sisters from Toronto founded the Hamilton congregation. Later, in 1868, five Sisters from Toronto established the London congregation. The Peterborough congregation was established by 20 Sisters from Toronto in 1890. In 1921, a new Pembroke congregation was formed by 27 Sisters from Peterborough. The last Canadian community was established in 1936 in Sault Ste. Marie by Peterborough Sisters. On November 22, 2012, the four congregations in Hamilton, London, Peterborough, and Pembroke were amalgamated into one charitable corporation under the name Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada. This website is the organizational website for the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada, one of three communities of women religious belonging to this order in Canada. The congregation was formed in November 2012, through the amalgamation of four existing communities in Hamilton, London, Peterborough and Pembroke. When this amalgamation took place, the congregation published a new website, to which contributions are made, primarily through the blog, by Sisters from the formerly separate communities. This website was later redesigned. The website contains material related to systemic justice issues, particularly poverty reduction, human trafficking and resettlement, and environmental issues, particularly ecology and spirituality. For those interested in lay ministry, there are details about how to become involved in the Associates program, or for those seeking a deeper commitment, there is information about the vocation process. The website includes material pertaining to the history of the four originally separate communities, as well as their common origin in Le Puy, France. There is a link to the consolidated archives website. The commitment to the environment is reflected in the two green buildings built as residences for the Sisters in Peterborough and London, as well as being a blue community, and information about these efforts is provided. There is information given about several ministries: the Office for Systemic Justice, the Hospitality Centre, and the Spiritual Ministries Network. The retreat centres founded and administered by the congregation are described, and links provided to their websites. The congregation’s mission in Peru is also described. Finally, the heart of the website is the blog, which is continuously updated and contains various articles by the Sisters and guest contributors, as well as a weekly “pause and ponder” which provides short musings. The blog has local access points, and the website has a search function. The website provides links to the congregational social media platforms, Twitter and Facebook. As the blog is continuously updated, the site will be captured periodically on an annual basis by the congregational archives.
