Description: The Chapel of the Incarnate Word was built in 1907 by, and for the use of, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word who had come to San Antonio in 1869. The body of the Chapel measures 564 feet long and 68 feet wide and is built of red brick with white stone facings and copper roof. For many years, the bell tower, with its four trumpeting angels, was the highest structure in San Antonio. Carved oak stalls are arranged in the monastic style which provides individual seating and facilitates the traditional chanting of the Divine Office. Stalls and side pews allow for 500 worshipers. Renovations to the Chapel in 2007 marked the 100th anniversary of the Chapel. A new Schoenstein pipe organ was also installed to celebrate the anniversary. The electric-pneumatic action instrument has 24 voices in 27 ranks in the gallery organ, which is connected to the one-manual console organ in the sanctuary. The Chapel of the Incarnate Word is always meant to be a place of welcome, especially when we gather to pray. The Chapel serves as the symbolic center of our international congregation, as well as our presence in the community.

Description: The San Antonio Spring, also called the Blue Hole, is a famous artesian spring on the Congregational heritage land of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Indigenous peoples here at the time of colonization called the springs Yanaguana, or up-flowing waters of the spirit. Coahuiltecan Native American creation stories describe how the Spirit Waters rose up, giving birth to all Creation. “ The whole river gushes up in one sparkling burst from the earth . . . The effect is overpowering. It is beyond your possible conceptions of a spring. — Frederick Law Olmstead, landscape architect and designer of New York's Central Park, 1857 This great spring was once a fountain spring rising up to twenty feet in the air. It joins Comal Springs, San Marcos Springs, and Barton Springs as one of the four fountain springs of Texas. Indeed, there is evidence to suggest these same four fountain springs may be depicted in a rock wall painting, known as the White Shaman Panel in the Lower Pecos, dating back some 4,000 years ago. These four great springs issue from a common water source, the vast Edwards Aquifer that flows underground along the Balcones Escarpment from west of Del Rio to north of Austin. The springs give rise to life-giving rivers that have sustained human communities for thousands of years. Evidence of human presence in the headwaters of these rivers dates back nearly 12,000 years, signifying the importance of these great springs to early human civilization. The San Antonio Springs were understood to be the source of the San Antonio River: “the key to the situation, the Ojo de Agua, the birthright of the city” (William Corner, 1890). Now the population of San Antonio is well over a million, all dependent on water from the Edwards Aquifer, which is riddled with many artesian wells. The first artesian wells drilled into the Edwards Aquifer in the 1890’s had the immediate effect of reducing spring flow. Increased pumping to supply water to an expanding population has caused further drawdown of the aquifer, leaving local springs dry much of the time. The headwaters remain a powerful symbol of the literal and spiritual life-giving essence of water. Flowing or not, they remain, to many, the sacred springs. Headwaters at Incarnate Word is a nonprofit sponsored Earth care ministry of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word.

Description: Merced Housing Texas’s story began in the late 1980s with a challenge from San Antonio civic leader Maria Berriozábal. Knowing that the Catholic women religious of San Antonio had built and run hospitals, schools and universities for generations, Berriozábal began talking with Sister Dorothy Ettling, CCVI, and Sister Jane Ann Slater, CDP, about how their congregations’ considerable influence and legacy of service could be greater used for San Antonio’s low-income residents. These conversations led to meetings between teams of women religious and city leaders talking about San Antonio’s most urgent needs. Affordable housing emerged as the most critical. Out of these conversations and meetings, Merced Housing was founded in 1995 by nine congregations of Catholic women religious for the purpose of addressing housing justice for low-income San Antonio residents. Six congregations—the Founders or Sustaining Congregations—made long-term commitments to provide personnel for board service, volunteer service or employment whenever possible. Five other congregations later joined as associates. Founders or Sustaining Congregations Congregation of Benedictine Sisters Congregation of Divine Providence Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate Associate Congregations Congregation of Saint Brigid Daughters of Mary Immaculate Ursuline Nuns of San Antonio Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament of Corpus Christi Sisters of the Holy Family When Merced’s founders were ready to launch Merced in 1995, they searched for the ideal founding President. They found one in Susan R. Sheeran, who had extensive experience in affordable housing development in both San Antonio and Denver, Colorado. Sheeran shepherded Merced from the very beginning through February 2019, when she retired. She led Merced through the development of 15 multifamily communities, the genesis and growth of the Owner-Occupied Repair Program, and the progress of the Resident Services Program. Sheeran mentored current President and Executive Director Kristin L. Davila to replace her. Davila continues to lead Merced with the commitment to mission that her predecessor modeled.

Description: The Sisters of the Holy Spirit and Mary Immaculate began in San Antonio in 1893 when foundress, Mother Margaret Healy Murphy, was called to minister to the neglected African American and Mexican populations in San Antonio, Texas. The Congregation had the numbers to extend its services to the poor in South Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Work along the border eventually took the Sisters into Mexico in the early 1900s and in the late 1980s ministry began in Zambia, Africa. Currently the Sisters are engaged in a variety of ministries in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi and in Zambia in Africa. They are chaplains in hospitals, prisons and nursing homes. Built on a solid foundation of compassionate care, each team member is at the top of their game, and each resident is supported on an individual basis. Providing high-quality care in a high-quality environment is our specialty. Our mission is to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to all those we serve. Our commitment is to show respect for the whole person at every stage of life, focusing on the unique needs of elderly adults. We provide a continuum of care, housing and services while offering compassion, comfort and opportunities for spiritual growth.

Description: Since our founding in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, we have paved new ways for tens of thousands of students to reach their academic dreams. UIW was the first institution to offer higher education for women in central and south Texas, consistently ranks among the top schools for veterans, and ranks No. 1 in the nation among faith-based universities graduating Hispanic students with bachelor’s degrees. As pioneers in Catholic higher education, we continue to forge new roads for every student to reach their full potential and create positive change in the world. UIW is a proud Hispanic Serving Institution.
