Collaborative ART Archive (CARTA)

Archive-It Partner Since: Nov, 2021

Organization Type: Museums & Art Libraries

Organization URL: https://carta.archive-it.org

Description:

The Internet Archive and the New York Art Resources Consortium (NYARC) have embarked on a collaborative project aimed at capturing and preserving at-risk web-based art materials. The project, formerly called the Consortial Action to Preserve Born-Digital Web-Based Art History & Culture and renamed as Collaborative ART Archive (CARTA), created a collaborative entity of art libraries building collections of archived web-based content related to art history and contemporary art practice. Through this collaborative approach, the project leverages shared infrastructure, expertise and collecting activities amongst participating organizations, scaling the extent of web-published, born-digital materials preserved and accessible for art scholarship and research. The goals are to promote streamlined access to art reference and research resources, enable new types of scholarly use for art-related materials, and ensure that the art historical record of the 21st century is readily accessible far into the future.

Collection: Artists Websites

Description: he Western Front’s earliest Internet-based project, presented in collaboration with Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art (MAWA), an artist-run centre in Winnipeg Manitoba. Utopias are often futuristic societies constructed from new ideals and a distillation of ideals from the past. Sometimes we ache for the simplicity and innocence of our past. If only that could be brought with us into our new utopia.

Title: Scrambled Bites

URL: http://frontprojects.nfshost.com/2003/scrambled/

Collection: Artists Websites

Description: Scrambled Bites is a year long project initiated by the Western Front Artist-Run-Centre. The central theme of the project is to collect data from sensors that are used in multiple installations (by different artists), use the Internet to translate and re-route this information, and then send the data back to the installation sites. In this way, the data of one art work informs the output (or content) of others. The project is inspired in part by a web-article Entropy and Imagination by Christopher Locke and a desire to strip-back complex systems to reveal the basic underpinnings of data flow, exchange, and intersection. It is intended as a forum for research, demonstration, and critical dialogue and includes three artist-in-residence projects and a variety of artist talks, walk-through workshops, presentations, streaming events, and a catalogue.
