This collection of websites was initiated in September 2021 in response to the regime change in Afghanistan and the international response to these developments. As US and Allied troops retreated from Afghanistan in May 2021 the Taliban quickly gained ground, seizing cities across the country, increasing threats of a worsening civil war. The Taliban claimed control of all major cities in Afghanistan, including the capital Kabul, where fighters seized the presidential palace, forcing the president to flee. The Afghan government which was supported by the US and the Allies collapsed and there was a transition of power to the Taliban. This collection has been scoped to fit the remit of the IIPC Content Development Group and the seeds and metadata were contributed by members of this group as well as a small number of nominations from members of the public. Crawling finished in January 2022.

Online News Around the World is a collection of news website snapshots attempting to capture roughly simultaneous, broad but shallow cross-sections of global online news. The aims of the collection are: to raise global awareness of the critical need for web archiving and of the importance of preserving born-digital news in particular; to create a rich multinational and multilingual collection that will engage researchers; to archive content from countries and regions not currently being archived by IIPC members; and to serve IIPC members as a testbed for identifying technical challenges and solutions for archiving online news. Blog articles and handouts at IFLA News section meetings reached out to potential seed
website nominators. The seed URLs were nominated by IIPC member institutions as well as by contacts at non-member institutions. Seeds were first crawled in October 2018--the IIPC Content Development Group will explore the possibility of maintaining and expanding the seed list and periodically recrawling the websites.
