Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is a comprehensive university in Allendale, Michigan. Established in 1960, Grand Valley serves more than 25,000 students, and offers 126 degrees. Though its main campus is in Allendale, it has additional campuses in Grand Rapids and Holland, Michigan, and regional learning centers in Detroit, Muskegon, and Traverse City. The Special Collections & University Archives of Grand Valley State University serves GVSU's students, faculty, staff, and other community members by collecting, preserving, and sharing the university's history and heritage.

Description: Act on Racism (AoR) is a small group of Grand Valley State University students founded in 2005. The performance group seeks to find a more creative way to discuss the manifestations of race and racism. During a performance, students reenact the true experiences of racism that have affected their lives. Every scene AoR performs is inspired by true events students or people known to the students have experienced. The performances by AoR incorporate various forms of artistic expressions, including singing, spoken word, and poetry. After each performance, AoR engages the audience in an interactive discussion. The discussion provides an opportunity for audience members to express their thoughts and potentially share any stories that relate to AoR's performance. AoR was under the mentorship of Dr. Jennifer Stewart, Associate Professor of Sociology.

Description: The applied Medical Device Institute (aMDI), founded in 2015, is a non-instructional unit within the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing (PCEC) at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). Their mission is devoted to the betterment of human health and well-being through innovation and commercialization of medical devices, healthcare solutions, and serving related industries. aMDI provides a full range of services, including but not limited to: developing analytical and physical models; rapid prototyping and fabricating systems; comprehensive testing for technical feasibility; and innovate research and development space. aMDI addresses business and market viability issue in collaboration with other entrepreneurial, regulatory, investment, and business architecture entities. Commercialization is facilitated at aMDI by connecting to the region's existing commercialization and financing organizations. In addition to the physicians, nurses, and clinicians, aMDI serves small companies as a contract “R&D department” and large companies by providing responsive intellectual capacity to meet the demands of unforeseen business cycles or emerging technologies.

Description: Anthropology is the study and understanding of humans in all places and throughout time, including the effects of culture on individuals and of individuals on their society. Anthropology offers a perspective for critically analyzing culture and prepares students for multicultural career settings in the United States and abroad. An anthropology major and minor are available. The wide scope and holistic nature of anthropology mean that students should have opportunities to experience three kinds of coursework: (1) courses concerned with the discipline; (2) courses specializing in a subdiscipline of anthropology; and (3) courses in disciplines related to anthropology. The anthropology program regularly sponsors field schools in archaeology and cultural anthropology. These programs are locally based and accessible to commuters as well as on campus students. Local and international internships are available. Occasional opportunities for out-of-country fieldwork are also available. Post-field independent research opportunities are available through the Anthropology Lab, which houses a collection of over 200,000 artifacts from over 100 sites.

Description: Housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department of Visual and Media Arts is also an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). This association establishes national art and design standards for undergraduate (and graduate) degree programs like ours. 682 majors are enrolled in five programs offering ten different degrees. Located in two buildings on the GVSU campus, the department is equipped with the specialized equipment necessary to complete work in traditional and new media. Description: The Department strives to set a standard of excellence in biology and natural resources education as a unit within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Description: The Biosafety Program at Grand Valley State University is a collaborative effort aimed at providing guidelines and information for the safe use of biohazardous and potentially biohazardous materials. The goal of the program is to ensure that all research, teaching, and clinical activities involving the use of biohazardous materials are in compliance with regulatory requirements and applicable University policies. The GVSU Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is responsible for ensuring that biohazardous agents are used safely and in accordance with state and federal regulations as well as GVSU policies. The IBC establishes policies and evaluates procedures, proposals, and records. Day-to-day operations are overseen by the University’s Biosafety Officer. The IBC is part of the University’s Research Protections Program and reports to the University Provost.

The Cardiovascular Sonography Program is accredited under the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP), programmatically through the Joint Review Committee on Education in Cardiovascular Technology (JRC-CVT).
