Description: The Leston L. Havens MD Teaching Site: Constructing Livable Lives was developed by Susan Miller-Havens, Ed.D, to continue teaching the scholarly and clinical work of Leston L. Havens. Site content includes Havens’s complete teaching lectures, books, papers, video and audio recordings, and digitized correspondence, photographs, and other documents related to Havens' life and work. Leston L. Havens (1924-2011), B.A., 1947, Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts; M.D., 1952, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, was Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts from 1970 to 1982 and Professor of Psychiatry at Cambridge Hospital (now Cambridge Health Alliance), Massachusetts, from 1982 until his death in 2011. A clinician and teacher, Havens served in several roles at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center, Boston, from 1957 to 1982, and later at the Cambridge Hospital where he held several appointments, including Principal Psychiatrist, Director of the Adult Psychiatric Residency Training Program, and Co-Director of Education. Havens was also a prolific author, publishing seven books and more than 140 articles throughout his career. The website was donated to the Center for the History of Medicine by the Havens family in 2015 and the archived website was released in 2018.
