Description:
On September 26, 2014, police and unidentified gunman believed to be drug cartel gang members allegedly ambushed a convoy of buses carrying teacher-trainee student activists from Ayotzinapa College in the state of Guerrero. In the central plaza of Iguala, six persons were shot to death. Three of the victims were students. The other three were random citizens that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The attack was brutal. Seventeen other students were wounded, and forty-three others were kidnapped. The activists were committed to helping small rural farmers and farm workers and were opposed to the new education reforms implemented by the government. The drug traffickers, their bosses, and the local politicians did not like the students' activism for various reasons. Twenty two police officers are now in custody for homicide and kidnapping along with four alleged drug traffickers. The mayor of Iguala and his wife are said to be behind the kidnapping, and the Governor of Guerrero has resigned under pressure. In the weeks after the disappearance of the students, nine mass graves have been discovered in the hills outside of Iguala. The bodies had been doused with gasoline and set on fire. It is not known if these are the bodies of the abducted students. As of December 2014, the official word is that none of the kidnapped students have been definitively found.

Archived since: Mar, 2021
Description:
In 2020 the ongoing partisan struggle in the United States between advocates for voting rights and official proponents of voter suppression measures came to a head during a bitter presidential election campaign conducted amidst the substantial additional challenges to participatory democracy posed by the global pandemic. The election saw historic turnout, but also a sustained effort by the defeated incumbent to challenge the election’s legitimacy, spurring a violent insurrection on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 to attempt to disrupt the U.S Congress from certifying the Electoral College results. As the Biden administration gets underway with narrow Democratic Party control of the House and Senate, while legislatures in multiple states are advancing new voter restrictions, structural democracy reform and voting rights will be at the heart of major legislative debates in 2021 and beyond. Columbia University Libraries has initiated a new thematic web archive collection devoted to documenting these historic debates and any ensuing legislation, both at the national and in selected local contexts, focusing on democracy reform and voting rights and subtopics including: campaign finance reform; electoral college reform (including the National Popular Vote interstate compact); the equal-time rule; gerrymandering; ranked-choice voting; universal voter registration; voter identification; voter suppression; DC Statehood; Puerto Rico Statehood; and Supreme Court expansion/reform.

Description:
The Foreign Relations of the United States series is the official documentary historical record of major U.S. foreign policy decisions that have been declassified and edited for publication. The series is produced by the State Department's Office of the Historian and printed volumes are available from the Government Printing Office.
FRUS begins with the administration of Abraham Lincoln in 1861. There are two cumulative indexes covering 1861-1899 and 1900-1918. The organization of FRUS is generally chronological, but the dates of the volumes do not necessarily reflect the dates of documentary history. For example, the volumes for 1900-1918 do not include the records dealing with World War I or the Russian Revolution. Each volume has a subject and author index. There is also typically a table of sources and abbreviations at the beginning of each volume. We're extremely interested -- for purely academic reasons -- in how this collection is being used and would be grateful if users would share that information with us. Please email James Jacobs, Government Information Librarian, at jrjacobs AT stanford DOT edu. User privacy is extremely important so of course any stories and personal information will be kept strictly confidential.

Description:
Library Digital Collections consists of digital resources pertaining to the University of Winnipeg Library, including the Urban Aboriginal Peoples Study, Western Canada Pictorial Index, and slide indexes from the departments of Media Services and UW Classics. The Urban Aboriginal Peoples Study is an extensive new research study that has gone beyond the numbers to capture the values, experiences and aspirations of Aboriginal peoples living in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and Ottawa. The WCPI consists of reproductions of more than 70,000 images related to the history of Western Canada, gathered over nearly three decades. It began as a centennial project in 1970 under the direction of local journalist Eric Wells and Thora Cook. Wells and Cook appealed to archives, museums and the public to provide pictures of the province’s past for an exhibit which was displayed at the Central Canadian Exhibition, and then toured around schools and fairs in the province. When Wells and Cook needed a home for the Index, the University of Winnipeg offered space and some expertise, and the Index came to live here. In the early 1990s a decision was taken to move the project off campus, and the Index found a new home in the Exchange District under the direction of a new Board. In 2005, the University of Winnipeg agreed to move the Index back to campus under the management of the Library. The Index consists of slides and contact sheets and does not include any original negatives or prints. Collecting practices for images in the Index varied throughout its development, with the primary source of images being other archives, museums and historical societies. Another significant percentage of images came from families, companies and other forms of private donation.

Description:
Most people know that the National Park Service cares for national parks, a network of nearly 400 natural, cultural and recreational sites across the nation. The treasures in this system – the first of its kind in the world –have been set aside by the American people to preserve, protect, and share, the legacies of this land.
People from all around the world visit national parks to experience America's story, marvel at the natural wonders, and have fun. Places like the Grand Canyon, the Statue of Liberty, and Gettysburg are popular destinations, but so too are the hundreds of lesser known yet equally meaningful gems like Rosie the Riveter in California, Boston Harbor Islands in Massachusetts, and Russell Cave in Alabama.
The American system of national parks was the first of its kind in the world, and provides a living model for other nations wishing to establish and manage their own protected areas. The park service actively consults with these Nations, sharing what we've learned, and gaining knowlege from the experience of others.
Beyond national parks, the National Park Service helps communities across America preserve and enhance important local heritage and close-to-home recreational opportunities. Grants and assistance are offered to register, record and save historic places; create community parks and local recreation facilities; conserve rivers and streams, and develop trails and greenways.

Description:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the Department of Energy’s largest science and energy laboratory. Managed since April 2000 by a partnership of the University of Tennessee and Battelle, ORNL was established in 1943 as a part of the secret Manhattan Project to pioneer a method for producing and separating plutonium. During the 1950s and 1960s, ORNL became an international center for the study of nuclear energy and related research in the physical and life sciences. With the creation of DOE in the 1970s, ORNL’s mission broadened to include a variety of energy technologies and strategies. Today the laboratory supports the nation with a peacetime science and technology mission that is just as important as, but very different from, its role during the Manhattan Project.

Library of Congress houses an entire section on political cartoon and American history. The cartoons include poking fun at various times in history satirizing American presidents, political events, news, people -- everyone is fair game and it's funny. You need to keep your sense of humor handy and have a thick skin because some people who are satirized don't have a sense of humor. Others are offended, but the satire isn't limited.
