The Nancy Yoshihara Mayeda archive is created to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the opening of the Nancy Yoshihara Mayeda Campus at Rooftop School and honor a dedicated and much respected educator. Mrs. Mayeda served as Rooftop's principal from 1982 to 1998. In 2000, the San Francisco Chronicle noted, ... after Dianne Feinstein: There are public schools named after three living heroes, Rosa Parks, Alice Fong Eu and Nancy Yoshihara Mayeda.

Nancy Yoshihara Mayeda spent her kindergarten, first and second grade years in an internment camp in Minadoka, Idaho during World War II. She was hired by the San Francisco Unified School district in June 1960, a time when “the concept of a Japanese American principal was unthinkable.”

Roosevelt signed an executive order that moved nearly 120,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans into 10 isolated relocation centers in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming. These temporary, tar paper-covered barracks, the guard towers, and most of the barbed-wire fences are gone now, but the people who spent years of their lives in the centers will never forget them.
