Theme: Legislation
Description: Lots of Canadians still don’t want to accept the ugly truth about the residential schools — that this country kidnapped thousands of aboriginal kids from their homes and families, dressed them up like dolls and stuffed them into “schools” where an alien way of life was violently forced upon them. The process destroyed countless children emotionally, spiritually and physically — children we claimed to be ‘helping’.

It is intended as a basis for dialogue. In June 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission on Indian Residential Schools called on governments in Canada, “in consultation and collaboration with Survivors, Aboriginal peoples, and educators, to make age-appropriate curriculum on residential schools, Treaties, and Aboriginal peoples’ historical and contemporary contributions to Canada a mandatory education requirement for Kindergarten to Grade Twelve students.” (Call to Action 62.1)

Description: In the Cunningham case, the Supreme Court recognized that for more than two centuries “the Métis have struggled . . . for recognition of their own unique identity, culture and governance.” The court acknowledged the historic unwillingness of governments to recognize and deal with the Métis — as a distinct rights-bearing aboriginal group — had created a constitutional gap. The court went on to affirm the inclusion of Métis in s. 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 was intended to change this history of denial and neglect in concrete ways.

Description: There were many stories told in the classroom throughout the term and others shared in written assignments. Reclamation of culture became a central theme of our class discussions as students shared openly about their personal experiences. Some Indigenous students shared stories as second and third generation residential school survivors. Others talked of their experiences with the child welfare system including the devastation of being removed from their families during the 60s scoop.

Description: While many Manitobans were planning at the end of March to take the kids on well-deserved vacation in the sun, I was driving a car-full of kids north -- to Edmonton where they would hear, first-hand, testimony of survivors of Canada's residential schools. Not the typical break from school, but I wanted them to be able to say one day they witnessed the final event of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
