Description: To mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the Folger Shakespeare Library is sending a First Folio to every state in the United States; the museum was selected as the venue for the Folio’s display in Kansas. Join us in 2016 as K-State honors the greatest playwright of the English language with this exhibit from the world’s largest Shakespeare collection. The first folio’s visit is accompanied by a semester-long series of campus and community events. This collaborative celebration of Shakespeare is made possible by K-State English Department, K-State Libraries, Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, McCain Auditorium and Manhattan community partners.

Description: Cleveland Public Library will be the site for the Ohio First Folio! tour stop. The book will be on display in the Treasure Room within the Special Collections on the third floor of the Main Library, 325 Superior Avenue in downtown Cleveland from June 20 to July 30, 2016 during regular Library hours. Visitors are encouraged to explore Shakespeare-themed displays, activities, performances, spoken word events, crafts classes, and technology in Brett Hall, The John G. White Corridor, the third floor displays, Tech Central, and the Cleveland Digital Public Library before viewing the First Folio in the Treasure Room.

Additional materials from the UO Libraries Special Collections and University Archives add context to the exhibition. These include the second and fourth folios of Shakespeare’s collected works, the first folio of the works of playwright Ben Jonson, and illustrations for an edition of The Tempest by English artist Walter Crane.

Description: Texas A&M University has been chosen as the Texas host for Shakespeare’s First Folio on its national tour to commemorate the 400th year anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. In honor of the First Folio arriving in College Station, Texas A&M will be hosting a series of events to celebrate the exhibit including performances, lectures and those aimed for students and teachers across Texas. The Cushing Memorial Library & Archives will also be hosting a complementary exhibit entitled Within the Book and the Volume: Early Modern English Literature at Texas A&M. Events will take place starting February 2 and continue through April 20, 2016

Description: The N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh will host an original 1623 Shakespeare First Folio. Considered one of the most influential books in the world, the First Folio includes 36 of Shakespeare’s plays, 18 of which had never been printed before. Description: When the tour was announced, Michael Witmore, director of the Folger Shakespeare Library, said, “Shakespeare is one of the greatest storytellers of all time. His characters are familiar to us, and his words still excite artists, scholars, and audiences around the globe. He connects us to each other, to our history, and to the themes and ideas that touch us every day. Shakespeare’s world is our world, and it is vast. We hope this exhibit invites everyone to come explore.” Dr. Witmore will deliver a public lecture, “Shakespeare for the Centuries,” at 4 p.m. on September 7 in the Morris Library Reading Room, followed by a Reception in Old College. Audiences are also invited to connect to the exhibition through guided and self-guided tours, gallery talks, performances and interactive workshops for all ages. Old College Gallery is the only location in Delaware for the First Folio! national tour.

Description: The Durham Museum is delighted to exhibit an original 1623 First Folio from the Folger Shakespeare Library as part of the First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare nationwide tour. This first-ever national tour of one of the world’s most influential books celebrates 400 years of Shakespeare and his legacy. The Durham is the only location in Nebraska for the First Folio! tour. In conjunction with the traveling exhibition from the Folger Shakespeare Library, The Durham Museum will also exhibit, A Thing Inspired: The Enduring Legacy of William Shakespeare, featuring some never-before-seen pieces from The Durham Museum’s Byron Reed Collection. A Thing Inspired draws objects and documents from the collection including a later edition of the Folio published in 1876 that speaks to the popularity of Shakespeare’s works, and also shows how later editors tried to change or “enhance” his plays.

The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare, with a copy of the First Folio provided by the Folger Shakespeare Library. The First Folio will be on display in the Washburn Arts Building (WAB), and programming throughout the month will offer the public a variety of ways to engage with Shakespeare in visually oriented ways. Six panels provided by the Folger Shakespeare Library will cover the history of Shakespeare and the First Folio alongside four companion panels developed by Gallaudet University focusing on the history of Shakespeare in the Deaf community and translations of his works in American Sign Language (ASL). Various events and programming will celebrate the unique contributions Deaf artists have made and continue to make to Shakespearean theater and showcase visual approaches to the Bard's plays. Events include: a visual Shakespeare festival; a lecture series; A Midsummer Night's Dream produced by the Gallaudet Theatre Program; Bard for a Day for Deaf families and Deaf/hoh children, and a K-12 educators workshop. Unique to Tulane’s presentation will be a rare quarto of Hamlet on loan from Tulane parent and exhibition supporter Stuart Rose. In addition to the Newcomb Art Museum exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to trace across campus an “archival circuit” of rare materials informing an array of special topics: the history of book publication in Shakespeare’s age at Howard-Tilton Library Special Collections; Shakespeare and race at the Amistad Research Center; and Shakespeare and gender at the Newcomb Archives and Vorhoff Library Special Collections. A distinctive New Orleans’ jazz funeral will kick off the campus-wide initiative.
