Title: Deconstructing Butter

URL: http://sites.middlebury.edu/butter/

Description: This page contains background information, a digital copy of a poster, film footage, and discussions about the April 9, 2010 staging of the 1999 play 'Spinning Into Butter' sponsored by student group Women of Color. The play was written by Rebecca Gilman, a student at Middlebury in the early 80s, and is based on events that transpired at Middlebury College in the fall of 1983. The source material centers around a controversial incident at the College when John Grace, a black College freshman wrote himself racist notes and broke his own window. John Grace confessed and withdrew from the College, but the stir around the events left many shaken and brought up wider issues of race and racism on campus.
