Video Games and Gaming Culture

Collected by: San Jose State University, School of Information

Archived since: Oct, 2015

Description:

This collection documents some of the conversations around long-term preservation (and the lack thereof) of video games, especially online-only ones; publisher trends; video game longevity vs. obsolescence; and other aspects of video games and gaming culture. Reddit and Voat are internet forums that have developed strong communities of gamers and, to a certain extent, video game creators and publishers. Twitch is a vibrant community of gamers that also features content creators who stream their experiences with video games and often get other gamers involved; this environment fosters communal gaming that is distinct from physically co-located, console-based multiplayer gaming and from online multiplayer gaming. Video game critics and gamer rights advocates Ross Scott and John Bain (aka Total Biscuit, The Cynical Brit, or Total Hilibut) foster, lead, and contribute to these discussions immensely through their text- and video-based commentary and creative content. With this assortment of websites, the curators attempt to demonstrate the vibrant, complex discussions being documented in 2015 around video games, gaming culture, and these communities' concerns with the future of the medium.

The video featured on this page is "Ross's Game Dungeon: Battleforge," where Scott offers some commentary and play-through of the online game Battleforge and a few other games. He also comments on the video game industry and the lack of preservation planning and accountability shown by publishers of these games. Battleforge is a "dead" game, one whose servers have been taken offline and that can no longer be played by gamers, even by those willing to shoulder the burden of hosting a server themselves, due to DMCA regulations and industry practices regarding online games.
