Title: What Chapters Are

Description: Each state library association is a Chapter of the American Library Association (ALA). Chapters are established by ALA’s governing body, the ALA Council. There are currently 57 chapters, representing the following geographic areas: Fifty state library associations, councils, or federations District of Columbia; the territories of Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands; four regional associations, including the Mountain Plains Library Association; New England Library Association; Pacific Northwest Library Association; Southeastern Library Association. Each Chapter and regional Chapter has a president and president-elect. Only state Chapters have a Chapter Councilor serving on the ALA Council. Established by the ALA Council upon recommendation of the ALA Executive Board on January 11, 1967, the Chapter Relations Committee (CRC) develops and recognizes Chapters as integral components of ALA. The ALA liaison to the Chapters is the ALA Chapter Relations Office (see also What ALA Does for Chapters).

Title: Over the Rainbow Books

Description: Over the Rainbow Project is an expansion of the highly successful Rainbow Books project. Over the Rainbow Books is an ad hoc committee of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) of the American Library Association (ALA). Members consists of librarians whose charge it is to select from the year’s publications, books that reflect lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender (lgbt) experience for adults and to annotate selected titles. Each year, the Over the Rainbow Project will publish a bibliography of recommended books for general readership. The bibliography will include books published between July 1 and December 31 of the previous calendar year. The committee’s charge is to create a bibliography of books that exhibit commendable literary quality and significant authentic lgbt content and are recommended for adults over age 18.

Description: The Forum is a year-long grant funded effort that will bring together key stakeholders from the areas of libraries, education, technology, adolescent development and the for-profit and nonprofit sectors to explore the world of young adults and library services to this population, and ultimately produce a report which will provide direction on how libraries need to adapt and potentially change to better meet the needs of 21st century teens. A draft of the report will be available in August 2013 for public comment and feedback. The final report will be published in October 2013.
