Description: “World Histories from Below” is the three-year project theme (2011-2014) for the Center for Historical Interpretation, housed in the department of History at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. We have several exciting events planned for AY 2012-13. These include an interdisciplinary faculty/student reading group, composed of historians and as well interested University of Illinois faculty from related fields, which will focus this year on issues of shelter, sanitation, and services “from below.” We will be hosting the award-winning film “Dear Mandela,” on the struggles of Abahlali baseMjondolo, the movement of shackdwellers in Durban, South Africa, in October. We will also hold series of syllabus design workshops for graduate students. The year’s programming will culminate in March with a week-long visit from Richard Pithouse, a political theorist at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa, who focuses on the history and politics of the poor in South Africa and the global implications of their movements and political philosophies.

Description: The first "WCBR" was organized by neuroscientists from UCLA and was held at the University of California conference center near Lake Tahoe in 1968. There were ~60 attendees, and the meeting was oriented mostly towards behavioral neuroscience and electrophysiological recording. Now our meeting includes ~500 neuroscientists from all over the world who work in a wide variety of fields. The format includes over 80 posters and 84 panels and workshops. The aim of panels is for experts in a specific field to provide a broad overview for a general audience. Workshops are more focused and are aimed at discussing specific issues in a given field. Posters represent an individual's scientific contributions. The meeting provides a unique opportunity for you to catch up on new developments in fields outside your own, meet and interact with long-time colleagues, and develop new collaborations in a casual setting.

Description: The University of Illinois Pollinatarium is the first free-standing science center in the nation devoted to flowering plants and their pollinators. Why do plants and pollinators merit such special attention? The ecological interaction between pollinators and plants is vitally important because most terrestrial life on Earth depends in one way or another on pollination for survival. Over 75% of all flowering plant species depend on animal pollinators in order to reproduce, so pollination is a key process that sustains all kinds of communities around the world. And among Earth’s inhabitants depending on pollinators for their existence are humans; about one-third of the diet consumed by people around the world—the part with most of the vitamins and minerals--is the result of the pollinator-plant interaction. Pollination is therefore economically important as well. In the U.S. alone, pollinator efforts contribute close to $20 billion to the economy and worldwide pollinator activities are worth over $200 billion. Because so much depends on pollination, the UI Pollinatarium is dedicated to increasing awareness and appreciation of pollination as a remarkable ecological partnership and an essential ecosystem service.
